A Must Listen

This is one of my all time favorite podcasts. Jaclyn’s passion, confidence, and deep pot of knowledge about the sex culture in America inspired me to get into the field myself when I started listening. Her guests are interesting, diverse, and always insightful. I’d give this show 10 stars if I could.

you keep using this word...

please stop using the term “gaslight” in regards to politics. it is NOT having a different interpretation of events or debating or arguing a differing point or defending yourself for goodness sake.

“the meaning of gaslighting is getting lost but it's actually a very specific form of abuse (the movie the term is coined from is actually quite good if you haven't seen it) and knowing what it means and what it doesn't is so important to know, so that you know how to handle people who are using it against yourself or loved ones. Also, using it to describe bad communication or other types of manipulation downplays actual gaslighting, and takes meaning/impact away from the experiences of people who have gone through it.”

“People really need to learn the difference between disagreeing, manipulation and gaslighting, instead of clinging onto a term ever since it became popular in leftbook. While all gaslighting is the result of manipulation, not all manipulation is gaslighting.

Gaslighting is where someone, in order to gain more power, makes a victim question their reality and sanity. It is done slowly, over a prolonged period of time where the victim is worn down, so they don't realise how much they've been brainwashed. It is an abuse tactic which tends to take the form of:
•blantant lying
•Denying having said or done things despite there being proof
•Using what is near and dear to you as ammunition
•Their actions not matching their words
•Throwing in positive reinforcement to confuse you
•Projection
•Trying to align people against you
•Telling you or others that you're crazy/a liar

Whereas manipulation is a way to covertly influence someone with indirect, deceptive, or (at its more extreme) abusive tactics, this usually takes the form of self-pity, telling lies or half-lies, charming, or flattering a person, intimidating, guilting or blackmailing them. you cannot gaslight strangers in online debates. Stop undermining the impact of a serious form of abuse.”
