Holly Mackle

I'm Holly Mackle - join me as I ask quirky questions of notable normals. Maybe you've heard what your favorite creatives are working on, but it's outright fun to hear about their most-texted emoji, what they put in their Costco buggy, or the last time they had a dance party. 1. Nicole Conrad Always Reads the Book

Nicole Conrad Always Reads the Book

It's Joyce from Stranger Things! Nah...it's our favorite English teacher, Nicole Conrad. She may always read the book, but hear the stories of how she is not to be trusted with famous people. Holly and Nicole will talk memorable haircuts, that wedding video, and certifiable wimpiness while watching Alone, plus book club fun and trope mash-up requests...this is a funny one with the bookstagrammer from @theturnedpage_bham. Holly would like to apologize for being especially laughy during this episode but would like to justify it by saying that Nicole is one of her absolute favorite people and there are jokes behind the jokes--so many they couldn't all be stuffed into one episode. So until we can have Nicole back on again--enjoy this one! Nicole is a great follow on Instagram, and you can sign up for her Substack. She's also happy for you to reach out to ask for her help in picking a book club read. Betsy Farquhar and Megan Saben Stayed at a Murder Hotel

Unseriously is BACK for season 6 in 2026 with 2 of the fabulous ladies who make up the team at Redeemed Reader, Betsy Farquhar and Megan Saben. In this episode find out which RR gal is a romcom unto herself, join along as we Barbara Kingsolver fangirl, and hear the story of the Murder Hotel. This episode could also be titled, "The One Where Holly Tries to Get Herself Hired at Redeemed Reader." Redeemed Reader is dedicated to helping Christian parents and educators raise discerning readers who delight in stories. Their work shows their hearts for Jesus, their regard for God's Word, and their natural delight for books. In this episode they'll help us think about exchanging the common question, "Is it clean?" for a more helpful and productive question. Their brand new book, The Redeemed Reader, helps parents engage with their kids in thoughtful discourse about what might be considered "mess" in books, without being afraid of the boogeyman. You can find the entire Redeemed Reader crew at their robust web site, read their heart in their book, sign up for their newsletter, or follow them on Instagram. Glenna Marshall Digs In

If you like your Bible teachers funny then don't miss this episode with the delightful Glenna Marshall. Come walk the ridgepole of the Barry family roof with Glenna and Holly, gasp at Glenna's unpopular opinions, see if you have the soup gene, and join Holly in demanding her group chat be renamed to honor the Puritan theologian Richard Sibbes. If you're Kate Albus, you're going to want to listen to this one. Glenna digs in for sure on this episode, but digs herself right out again with the offering of her blondie bars recipe, aka butterscotch brownies, which you'll find at the end of these show notes. Find Glenna trolling Instagram, where she's a super fun follow. She has authored the books Known & Loved, Memorizing Scripture, Bible Study, and the upcoming Praying In Pain. You can also find her at glennamarshall.com. Find podcast news, behind the scenes, and all things Unseriously @hollymacklebooks. from Glenna: My recipe is the Butterscotch Brownies from the Bridal Edition of the Betty Crocker Cookbook I got as a newlywed in 2003. I have made these bars for my family and church functions for more than twenty-two years. If you have a baby or a funeral or a surgery, you’re probably going to get these from me and you’re going to love them. I’ve tried to locate the original recipe online but can only find variations of it. This one is the closest, but I use a whole cup of flour per the original recipe. You need to let them sit for about an hour before cutting and serving or they will fall apart. BUTTERSCOTCH BROWNIES 1/4 cup shortening1 cup light brown sugar (packed)1 egg3/4 cup sifted flour1 teaspoon baking powder1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon vanilla1/2 cup chopped nuts Heat oven to 350°F degrees. Grease an 8-inch square pan. In a saucepan melt shortening over low heat. Take from the heat and stir in the brown sugar. Set aside to cool. Into the cooled sugar and shortening stir in the egg. Add the sifted flour, baking powder, and salt and blend well. Then stir in the vanilla and chopped nuts. Spread in pan. Bake 25 minutes, only until a toothpick stuck in center comes out clean. Do not overbake. Cool in the pan and cut into squares. Makes 16 2-inch squares.
