Just like a lot of millennials I was thrown out of university into the real world without much guidance, having to find my feet in the middle of a recession. I took the risky path of freelancing in the film industry in London without much experience, working hand to mouth to pay my rent. Over the next decade I got so all consumed by being on the career treadmill that I forgot why I decided to be a filmmaker in the first place and my mental health and personal life slipped to rock bottom. I needed to find a way out, be inspired again and learn how to build greater resilience to face the challenge of being my own boss - so I turned to the successful and incredible artists I was surrounded by and started Vision & Graft! I'm Will Preisner, a freelance cinematographer & photographer and in Vision & Graft I'll be sharing the real stories behind extraordinary creative careers and discovering what effects these journeys can have on our mental wellbeing. Each episode features a new creative guest taking a frank and honest look at their career and the hurdles they've faced along the way. It's a go to source for inspiration, ideas and insights into how to develop resilience and take on life's challenges. In Episode 15 of Vision & Graft I'm talking to Drew Forsyth, an Award Winning Portrait Photographer working for commercial and advertising clients in the UK and around the world. It is a great episode for aspiring photographers and seasoned pros alike.
In this episode Drew and I discuss how he became a photographer and his journey to where he is now. We then talk about specialising in photography ands the benefits of this in light of his passion for dance photography.
We go on to chat about what inspires him in his work and where he draws inspiration intentionally before we cover the importance of personal projects as a photographer and an artist.
We discuss clients and pitching them big projects, concepts and ideas as well as how to protect the creative spark the start of the project. Finally we discuss taking breaks from social media.

14 | Snowball Effect | Louis Lagayette
In Episode 14 of Vision & Graft I'm talking to Louis Lagayette, a Director who is known for directing the feature film Trendy as well as directing and writing many other projects both short and long form.
In this episode Louis and I discuss his latest project, a series of 3 music videos for the artist Maes called Réelle Vie. He then shares his journey to becoming a director and screenwriter.
We then chat in depth about how he managed to make his first feature film Trendy and raising the finance for the film straight out of university. I also worked as the director of photography on the film.
Louis and I share our thoughts on pushing ourselves and understanding our physical limits when working in the film industry. Louis then goes on to reflect on his choice to return to formal education as an adult, recently completing a masters at Columbia.
Finally we talk through the importance of maintaining the right atmosphere at work and the value of role models in Louis' career and having the right perspective on this.

In this episode David and I discuss taste and style in filmmaking. David shares his thoughts on having an agent and what benefit this has brought to his career.

In the episode Jeroen shares what an Assistant Director's job role is and why it is so important to the success of a film.
We also discuss keeping calm under pressure and communicating with different directors who are each creatives with different ways of working. We consider how important 'clicking' with collaborators is and whether it is important.

In Episode 11 of Vision & Graft I'm talking to Emily Carlton, a screenwriter, journalist and producer who is also one of the cofounders of the Breaking Through The Lens initiative that connects female and non-binary filmmakers to finance at film markets. Emily is so humble and amusing in the way she discusses her career that her honest take on her freelance life is one I highly recommend listening to.
In the episode Emily and I discuss the themes of mental health and her interest in people in her screenwriting work as well as where she finds her inspiration as a writer.
We also discuss the challenge Emily has had having dyslexia as a writer and the skill of knowing when to stop working on a project and to move on to the next.
Emily shares her process of getting an agent and the long path to acquiring one before we chat about the challenge of poor pay at the start of a creative career and how to balance doing what you love with paying the bills.
Finally we go on to discuss Breaking Through The Lens and the reason why she started the initiative as well as her passion for equality.

10 | Many Hats | Hannah Lee
In Episode 10 of Vision & Graft I'm chatting to Hannah Lee, a designer I've had the pleasure of working alongside on a variety of projects over the last ten years and for the ten years prior to that we went to college and school together. Hannah is someone I've often gone to for professional advice and she has a great deal of career wisdom to share.
In the episode Hannah and I discuss the merits of freelancing and she shares what the experience is like compared to 'perming' at an agency. She also covers the money trap and how being in full time employment can lead to this if you don't watch out.
We then go on to discuss burnout and how to find the right work life balance. Hannah has realised that she needs to strive to maintain that balance if she wants to be effective at work and she also covers working abroad as a freelancer and finding the balance far from home.
Saying no is a big topic on this podcast and we discuss this in the context of charging what you are worth and we mull over how to get to the point where what you consistently charge aligns with what you think your skills are worth.
Hannah also raises an important point about women in powerful roles within advertising and how she has been working on improving her confidence to keep progressing and growing in her career.
