“how was your day?” and other ways our kids completely undo us

back-to-school season has arrived, which means name labels on underwear, three spare outfits, approximately six thousand school holidays and trying to find kids’ activities that don’t require the entire family to live in the car. Emily shares how Olivia’s first week of kindergarten went—including the exhaustion, the new routines and the classroom guinea pig currently getting top billing—and Kendall prepares to send Charlie to school while negotiating a gymnastics tryout for a two-year-old whose ability to listen is…very mood-dependent. Plus, the girls debate butter storage, remember their children eating straight from restaurant butter packets and hear a listener submission about the tiny moment when your child suddenly asks, “how was your day?” Key TakeawaysKindergarten can be more exhausting than preschool even when the day is technically shorter. Putting multiple children in activities is its own logistical sport. The dream is two classes at the same location, preferably back-to-back, with no one spending an hour watching their sibling have fun.The smallest signs that our kids are growing can hit harder than the official milestones.Every parent has a category of problem they have decided to leave for Future Them. Back-to-school preparation is mostly labeling objects you did not realize required individual identification. mentioned links & resourcesGolden Gate Gymnastics Name BubblesListener Submissions DM them to us on Instagram:  @wait.same.pod OR Email your voice notes to waitsamepodcast@gmail.com

popsicles at 10:30 a.m. and other parenting choices we stand by

Apparently there comes a point in motherhood when your kid can sit next to you and happily do their own thing while you do yours…and honestly, we weren’t sure we’d ever get here. This week we’re talking about the tiny signs that maybe, just maybe, parenting is getting a little easier (or just harder in different ways)  — plus letting our kids absolutely ruin our perfectly painted pottery, discovering the joy of having a four-year-old shopping buddy, and the very specific hell that is bringing small children into an airport lounge full of silent business travelers. Also: why do some cars slowly become covered in kid stickers? Could we win The Amazing Race? and yes, sometimes keeping your kids quiet means popsicles at 10:30 in the morning. we stand by it. Key TakeawaysSometimes you don’t realize you’re out of a hard phase until you’re already on the other side of it. Your kid’s version of “fun” does not necessarily look like fun while it’s happening. Motherhood is a recurring exercise in letting someone mess up the thing you could do better yourself. Traveling with young kids makes you hyperaware of everyone around you. Sometimes survival wins.  Mentioned Links & ResourcesGrand Central Petaluma — coffee/breakfast spot on the Petaluma River  The Hot Spot Studios — Petaluma — paint-your-own pottery and other crafts Solar Buddies — refillable roll-on sunscreen applicator  Listener Submissions DM them to us on Instagram:  @wait.same.pod OR Email your voice notes to waitsamepodcast@gmail.com

    He Packed...Except for One Child

Some weekends leave you exhausted...and somehow completely full. This week we're talking about the dance recital that completely changed Emily's perspective on dance moms, the weird emotions that come with kindergarten around the corner, and why saying goodbye to preschool teachers feels way bigger than anyone prepares you for. We also get unexpectedly nostalgic about MASH, school doodles, packing lists, and the invisible mental load of getting a family out the door—especially when someone volunteers to pack...and forgets an entire child's clothes. Plus, one listener reminds us that apparently only mommy is allowed to say no. If you've ever looked at your kids lately and thought, "how are we already here?"...wait...same. Don't forget to follow the show wherever you listen and come hang out with us on Instagram @wait.same.pod—we're sharing Emily's infamous "Do Job" doodle and bringing back MASH. Key Takeaways Sometimes the moments we expect to be stressful become the ones we'll remember forever.Watching our kids step into new stages of life is exciting and surprisingly emotional. The mental load isn't always obvious until someone else tries to take it over.Growing up looks different for every generation, but nostalgia has a funny way of bringing us together.Motherhood is constantly balancing letting go while still wanting to hold on.Listener Submissions DM them to us on Instagram:  @wait.same.pod OR Email your voice notes to waitsamepodcast@gmail.com

When your kid doesn't want a birthday party

We start with toddler "why?" questions that leave everyone exhausted...and somehow end up talking about how our kids are already teaching us about boundaries. This week we're chatting about surviving nonstop summer parenting, realizing one kid needs a packed social calendar while the other needs a quiet couch, honoring a birthday request that wasn't what mom imagined, and the unexpected compliment from a stranger that nearly made emily cry in barnes & noble. Plus: the best friend question that made us realize our first impressions of each other were exactly what the other person needed.  . And of course...we wrap things up with a listener story that proves kids always have a solution (even if that solution is just buying a whole new house). If you've ever had to let go of your own expectations to meet your kid where they are... Wait...same. Key TakeawaysSometimes the best way to celebrate your child is the way they want—not the way you imagined.Kids often tell us exactly what they need...if we're willing to listen.Different personalities require different parenting, even under the same roof.Encouragement from a complete stranger can stay with you far longer than criticism. The friendships that last aren't built on perfection—they're built on eventually seeing each other's real selves.Listener Submissions DM them to us on Instagram:  @wait.same.pod OR Email your voice notes to waitsamepodcast@gmail.com

    maybe the crystal is helping

Did motherhood make us more "woo-woo"... or just a little more open-minded? This week we're talking crystals, breathwork, meditation, fertility journeys, and all the things we used to think we'd never be into. Turns out when life gets messy—and motherhood reminds you how little control you actually have—you start looking at things a little differently. We're not here to convince anyone that crystals have magical powers. We're talking about why so many moms find comfort in rituals, intentions, and anything that helps us feel a little more grounded. Plus: the weirdest thing Kendall has ever done to get pregnant, the Joshua Tree crystal shop that cracked this whole conversation open,, and a listener submission that got the laugh we needed.  If you've ever caught yourself thinking, "okay...maybe I'll try it..." ...wait...same. Key TakeawaysMotherhood has a way of softening our certainty and opening us to things we never thought we'd try.Sometimes rituals aren't about magic—they're about creating intention, hope, and a sense of control.Fertility journeys can lead us to unexpected places, emotionally and spiritually. You don't have to choose between science and curiosity; many moms find value in both.Kids will humble you in public...especially when they're learning anatomy.Mentioned Links & ResourcesSoul of YogaAll About Penises (children's anatomy book)All About Vaginas (children's anatomy book)Listener Submissions DM them to us on Instagram:  @wait.same.pod OR Email your voice notes to waitsamepodcast@gmail.com
