Biblical teaching to help us think deeply about the Word of God and its implications for life.

Do Not Add or Subtract (Deuteronomy 4)

Do Not Add or Subtract (Deuteronomy 4)

Moses tells God's people to neither add to nor subtract from God's commands. Nothing could be simpler, right? Actually, this was a problem for Israel and continues to be a problem for God's people today. Many Christians set aside (subtract) difficult or unpopular Biblical commands. However, other well-meaning Christians add requirements (extrabiblical rules) to what we find in the Scriptures. In this message, we consider how both deviations lead to serious problems in the church.

    Teach Us to Pray (2024)

    Teach Us to Pray (2024)

Why did the early church pray so much? How were their prayers so effective? Could it be that they simply prayed as Jesus taught and showed them?  May we experience this type of prayer! This lesson is built on a short devotional taught by Chuck Pike in 2020, adapted from Tertullian's work "On Prayer".

Encounters with Five Nations (Deuteronomy 2-3)

Encounters with Five Nations (Deuteronomy 2-3)

The Israelites must pass through the lands of five other nations in succession on their way to Canaan. We find valuable lessons for us in each encounter. However, there are troubling passages to wrestle with as well. How could a good and loving God “harden” the spirit of Sihon, and then tell his people to kill all the Amorites (including women and children)? We draw from other passages in Scripture and insights from early Christians to find good answers to classic questions.

    Pursuing Biblical Unity, Part 2

    Pursuing Biblical Unity, Part 2

One of the great challenges to Biblical unity is unresolved conflict between Christians. Fortunately, in Matthew 18, Jesus not only gives us a process to revolve conflict with one another, but also the heart we are to bring to conflict resolution. In this second of a two-part series on unity, we cover Jesus' simple, challenging, and extremely effective teachings on reconciling with our brother and sister.

Introduction and Recounting the Journey (Deuteronomy 1)

Introduction and Recounting the Journey (Deuteronomy 1)

Many consider this to be the single most important book in the Old Testament. Why is that? We begin by considering ten reasons why this book is so important for Christians to study today. After establishing the context for Deuteronomy, we explore the first chapter, where Moses recounts the journey from Mt. Sinai to the time at Kadesh Barnea when the 12 spies were sent out.

    Pursuing Biblical Unity, Part 1

    Pursuing Biblical Unity, Part 1

Before going to His death, Jesus prays for the unity of His followers.  He promises that by this unity the love and glory of God will be revealed, and the world would believe that God sent Him.  In this first of a two-part lesson, we examine why this unity is so difficult and how to pursue it.  We address the power of our tongues to destroy unity in the church, including through slander and gossip. We then turn to how the tongue can be used to build unity by courageously speaking the truth to one another with a heart of love and concern.  In the second lesson, we address Jesus' teachings on resolving conflict in His church.

Refreshing, inspiring and challenging Christian teaching

I’ve been listening to this podcast for awhile now and have been loving the current series of sermons going through 1 Corinthians. It’s refreshing to hear teaching that is both unapologetically faithful to the text and at the same time approachable. Chuck is not afraid to say when a matter or detail is unclear (in general, or at least to him), but does not shy away from passages commonly seen as controversial or "confusing". Insights from early Christian writings are also shared which are helpful in seeing how they understand Jesus’ and the apostles teaching. Chuck also shows throughout his teaching how present Christ is in the Old Testament, which is fascinating.

Highly recommend this podcast for seekers of truth and those wanting to step outside their particular culture and/or church background to better understand and contend for “the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).

It’s refreshing to hear teaching that clarifies (rather than confuses) the scriptures, confirming that God indeed wants to be known and his will for us to be understood, and has communicated to us clearly. No theological acrobatics necessary!

Thank you Chuck and others at Walking By Faith for your love for the Lord and zeal to do his will, and your earnest desire to help others to know Him.

These messages are evidence of this ministry’s commitment to faithful study of God’s Word, church history, and the Christian life in our complicated and often confusing modern day. They don’t claim infallibility, but they also doesn’t shy away from doing their best to wrestle with tough topics and difficult passages. I often share these messages with friends and family. I encourage people to give these messages a close listen.

God bless
