Walking Defined

Kate Caris & Baylee Hefley

Hosted by Baylee Hefley and Kate Caris, Walking Defined is a podcast about discovering what it means to live a life fully shaped by God. Through honest conversation, prayer, scripture, and shared testimony, Baylee and Kate explore how faith touches every part of daily life—marriage, motherhood, friendship, identity, and the quiet moments with God in between. What began as a weekly 6 a.m. prayer partnership has grown into a space where women can be encouraged to draw near to the Lord, find community, and be reminded of His presence in both the ordinary and the extraordinary. Each episode points back to the truth of God’s Word—“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:6). With reverence, vulnerability, and joy, Baylee and Kate invite you to walk defined not by the world, but by the One who calls you His own. From Suicidal to Surrendered: A Young Cowboy’s Testimony

Dalton Cook shares his powerful Christian testimony of walking away from God, battling depression and suicidal thoughts, and the night his hand found his Bible instead of his gun. Baylee’s younger brother opens up about growing up as a pastor’s kid, becoming numb to the power of the Holy Spirit, living a double life, and eventually surrendering his life to Jesus Christ. After years of rebellion, partying, pride, and lukewarm Christianity, Dalton found himself isolated and at the lowest point of his life. Sitting alone in his truck with a pistol beside him, he believed he was ready to end his life. But when he reached over with his eyes closed, his hand landed on his Bible instead. That moment became a turning point. It reminded Dalton that God was still present, still working, and not finished with his life. Dalton also shares why Christian men need biblical community, men’s Bible studies, discipleship, accountability, and honest friendships. He explains how isolation can make temptation, depression, and spiritual warfare more dangerous—and why men were never meant to walk through life alone. Dalton and Baylee also tell unforgettable stories from their childhood in Russia, where their family worked on massive cattle ranches, navigated extreme culture shock, and watched God use the experience to transform their faith. Now working as a young cowboy and beginning to answer a call to ministry, Dalton reflects on preaching his first message, sharing the gospel in the ranching community, and learning to trust God through every high and low. In this episode: Growing up as a pastor’s kid and becoming numb to faith Walking away from God and living a double life Rebellion, drinking, partying, and lukewarm Christianity Depression, suicidal thoughts, and the night God intervened Why Christian men need biblical brotherhood and accountability Isolation, temptation, spiritual warfare, and mental health Following Jesus in cowboy and ranching culture Life on a cattle ranch in Russia Answering God’s call to ministry Preaching for the first time How God uses our lowest moments for His glory Finding courage in Joshua 1:9 Scripture discussed includes Joshua 1:9, Proverbs 27:17, and 1 Peter 5:8. CONTENT NOTE: This episode contains an honest discussion of suicidal thoughts and a suicidal crisis involving a firearm. Is Motherhood Really The hardest Job In The World? | A Biblical Challenge For Moms

Is motherhood really the hardest job in the world—or has that message unintentionally made motherhood feel even harder? In this episode of Walking Defined, we challenge one of the most repeated messages in modern motherhood culture. Motherhood includes difficult seasons, exhausting moments, and enormous responsibility. But when Christian moms constantly hear that motherhood is impossibly hard, does that mindset encourage them—or leave them feeling defeated before the day even begins? We discuss the difference between acknowledging that motherhood has hard moments and building an identity around struggle. This is not a conversation meant to belittle stay-at-home moms or add more pressure to overwhelmed women. It is an invitation to examine our attitudes, reject victim mentality, pursue biblical excellence, and ask an honest question: Can we do better? We also explore how gratitude changes the way women approach motherhood, homemaking, marriage, screen time, children’s entertainment, and feeding their families. From the Proverbs 31 woman to the call to live a quiet life, Scripture gives Christian women a vision of motherhood that is purposeful, joyful, diligent, and rooted in serving God rather than seeking validation from culture. In this episode, we discuss: • Is motherhood really the hardest job in the world? • How mindset can make motherhood feel harder • Victim mentality in modern motherhood culture • Biblical motherhood and the Proverbs 31 woman • Receiving correction and pursuing growth as a wife and mother • How complaining about motherhood affects our children • Raising children who value marriage and family • Screen time, Disney movies, and the messages children absorb • Teaching children how to handle boredom and quiet • Feeding your family healthy, nourishing meals • Choosing gratitude instead of living defeated Motherhood is important, sacred work. The question is not whether moms are doing enough to earn the world’s approval. The question is whether we are willing to let God reveal the areas where we can grow—and trust Him to help us take the next right step. Christian Homeschooling: Is Public School Raising Your Kids?

What if the biggest barrier to homeschooling is not your ability, but the lie that you are not equipped? In this episode, we are having an honest Christian conversation about homeschooling, public school, parenting, socialization, sacrifice, and what it means to take Scripture seriously while raising children in a confused culture. We talk about: Why Christian moms are more equipped than they think Public school, worldview, curriculum, and gender confusion Homeschool socialization and why it may be stronger than people assume Classical education, Classical Conversations, and teaching kids how to learn The cost of homeschooling and what families may need to sacrifice Why protecting your child’s mind matters What it means to raise children in truth, not confusion This conversation is not about shaming moms. It is about asking the harder question: Who is discipling our children? If you have ever wondered whether Christians should homeschool, whether public school is still safe for your kids, or how homeschooling could even work for your family, this episode is for you. Plus, stay until the end for a special conversation with Baylee’s son Brim as he talks about homeschool, science, Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Are We Raising Rebels? Biblical Parenting vs. Gentle Parenting Part 2

Biblical parenting vs. gentle parenting is one of the biggest conversations Christian parents are facing today. In Part 2, we’re talking about obedience, discipline, homeschooling, worldview, sleep training, and how to raise children to obey God in a confused culture. What happens when we raise children to question every authority, but still expect them to obey the Lord? In this episode of Walking Defined, we continue our conversation on biblical parenting vs. gentle parenting and unpack what it means to train up a child in the way they should go. We talk about why obedience matters, why children need firm and loving boundaries, and how Christian parents can disciple their children instead of letting culture shape their worldview. We talk about: • Biblical parenting and why obedience matters • Gentle parenting, discipline, and the danger of raising rebels • What it means to train up a child biblically • The difference between harsh parenting and loving correction • Why consistency and boundaries help children feel secure • Homeschooling, public school, and worldview formation • How parents can teach children truth before culture gets there first • Sleep training, resilience, and fear-based parenting • Grandparent boundaries and respecting the parents’ authority • Adult children, marriage, and biblical family order This conversation is honest, direct, and deeply countercultural. We are not claiming to parent perfectly. We are learning, repenting, growing, and asking the Lord to teach us how to steward children well. If you are a Christian mom, future mom, grandmother, spiritual auntie, or woman trying to understand parenting through the lens of Scripture, this episode will challenge you to think long-term, reject fear-based parenting, and trust God’s design for the family. Leaving Legalism, Finding Jesus | Rebekah Eckhardt’s Testimony of Faith, Fear, and Israel

What happens when your faith has been shaped by legalism, religious confusion, suffering, and a deep love for Israel? In this episode of Walking Defined, Baylee sits down with special guest Rebekah Eckhardt to hear her powerful testimony of growing up in a Christian family, walking through legalistic patterns, living and serving in Israel, and learning to keep Jesus at the center of her faith. Rebekah shares about a season of serious illness that brought her face-to-face with the fragility of life and the faithfulness of God. Through that suffering, she learned what it means to rest in Him instead of striving to prove herself. We also talk about: Legalism and religious confusion Why Jesus has to remain the cornerstone of our faith How suffering can deepen our trust in God Rebekah’s experience living and serving in Israel Fear, spiritual warfare, and trusting God with our lives Marriage, sanctification, and letting God shape us Why Christians should be careful not to drift from the gospel Israel, antisemitism, prophecy, and the return of Jesus The power of testimony and speaking truth out loud This conversation is honest, weighty, and full of wisdom for anyone who has wrestled through confusion, fear, legalism, or trying to understand where they stand with God. If you’ve ever felt like you needed to have every answer, earn God’s love, or figure out your faith perfectly, this episode is a reminder that Jesus is enough. Biblical Parenting vs. Gentle Parenting | Are We Raising Kids to Obey God?

Are we raising children to follow their feelings, or training them to obey the Lord? In this episode of Walking Defined, we’re unpacking one of the most controversial conversations in Christian culture today: parenting. The world tells parents that discipline is harmful, obedience is outdated, and children should be led by their emotions. But what does the Bible actually say? We talk about: Biblical discipline and why obedience mattersThe difference between loving correction and harsh parentingWhy gentle parenting can become a feelings-first approachHow parents can prepare children to obey God later in lifeWhy doing the hard work now matters for who your children becomeThe importance of a unified marriage in parentingWhy your job is not to make your child happy, but to raise them wellHow culture is shaping children before parents realize itThis conversation is direct, countercultural, and rooted in the belief that Scripture is still true, still applicable, and still the standard for how we live. If you’re a Christian mom feeling confused, convicted, overwhelmed, or unsure where to start, this episode is for you. We are not claiming to parent perfectly. We are learning, wrestling, repenting, and growing too. But we believe parents have been entrusted with a sacred responsibility, and culture cannot be the loudest voice shaping our children. Yoga, Horoscopes, & Superstitions: What Should Christians Avoid?

What if it’s not just what you say… but what you’re participating in? In this episode of Walking Defined, Kate and Baylee continue their conversation on superstitions—but this time, they go deeper. This isn’t just about phrases like “knock on wood” or “fingers crossed.” This is about actions, habits, and practices that have become normalized… even within the Christian life. From everyday sayings to things like yoga, meditation, horoscopes, and “energy” practices, this conversation challenges one central question: Does intention matter… or does participation? This episode unpacks: The spiritual implications behind common phrases like jinx, third time’s a charm, and fingers crossedWhy “good intentions” don’t remove spiritual participationThe origin and influence of astrology and horoscopesThe difference between biblical meditation and modern meditationA deep dive into yoga—its origins, meaning, and spiritual implicationsWhy “neutral” spiritual practices don’t actually existConviction vs. legalism (and how to navigate both biblically)The importance of obedience once you know the truthThis is not about fear. This is not about perfection. It’s about becoming aware, responding to conviction, and choosing obedience in your walk with God. Because once you know… you’re no longer operating in ignorance.
