    We talk about how to stick to our spending plans aka budgets in front of friends and family without all the awkwardness.  The primary way is by using a phrase we hear very often and  don't realize it. The phrase is "it's against our policy".  Have you ever heard this phrase before, where were you, what were you trying to do, and did the phrase prevent you from getting what you want?  If it did then the phrase worked, for the person who said it.
