#76 Jeff Wieland, Benefits of a Finished Lower Level in a Custom Home

Finished Lower Levels: Unlocking the Full Potential of Your Custom Home In this episode of The WB Download, host Jeff Wieland dives below the surface, literally to explore one of the most valuable and often underutilized spaces in a custom home: the finished lower level. Jeff shares why today’s basements are no longer just storage areas. Instead, they’re thoughtfully designed extensions of the home that add meaningful square footage, everyday functionality, and incredible entertainment value. From maximizing natural light and creating seamless walkouts to patios and pools, to incorporating higher ceilings that match the main floor, Jeff explains how modern lower levels feel anything but “below ground.” He walks through popular features homeowners are requesting, including custom bars, exercise rooms, golf simulators, wine rooms, saunas, guest suites, and even multi-generational living spaces. Jeff also highlights the growing demand for lower-level home offices and wellness spaces as families rethink how they live, work, and relax at home. Planning ahead is a key theme throughout the episode. Jeff discusses designing with the future in mind, adding extra bathrooms, unfinished storage, proper heating and cooling, egress windows, and smart layouts that allow for easy renovations down the road. It’s all about creating spaces that adapt as life changes while boosting comfort and resale value. If you’re building a custom home or considering finishing your basement, this episode is packed with insights and ideas to help you make the most of every square foot. #72 Mike O'Rourke, O'Rourke Wrecking Company

In this episode of the WB Download, host Jeff Wieland sits down with Mike O’Rourke of O’Rourke Wrecking Company, a family-owned demolition and excavation leader with deep roots dating back to 1962. Mike shares the rich history of the company, founded by his father, Pat O’Rourke, who began with nothing more than grit, determination, and a vision. Pat bought his first loader at a young age and launched his own excavation business, initially focused on residential work. Mike walks listeners through the pivotal transition from excavation to demolition, a shift that began during the winter months when excavation work slowed down. What started as off-season jobs soon became the company’s core business. Over time, O’Rourke Wrecking expanded into major demolition projects across the country, including the preparation work for Riverfront Stadium and other landmark structures. The episode also reflects on the personal side of the company’s story. When Pat O’Rourke passed away in 1994 at just 52 years old, Mike stepped in to lead the business at a young age, carrying forward his father’s legacy of work ethic, humility, and commitment to doing things the right way. Jeff and Mike also explore the company’s evolution into the modern era, touching on technology like GPS tracking and field apps, employee loyalty, operational efficiency, and some of their most notable projects, from Sander Hall at UC to the demolition of Forest Fair Mall and even the annual downtown Christmas tree. The conversation highlights the next generation of leadership as well. Mike shares the impact of his wife, Michelle O’Rourke, who became CEO in 2019. Her dedication to the construction industry, involvement on numerous boards, major fundraising initiatives, and health-awareness programs on job sites have significantly shaped the company’s community presence and growth. Packed with family history, industry insights, and heartfelt stories, this episode offers an inside look at the people and values behind one of Cincinnati’s most respected demolition companies. Jeff reflects on decades of transformation, highlighting how technology, tools, materials, and even communication have reshaped the way custom homes are built. He also highlights the importance of marketing and social media for showcasing their craftsmanship and connecting with customers, something that didn’t exist in Jack’s era.
