#WeGotGoals is a podcast by aSweatLife.com on which we talk to high achievers about their goals - some they've already accomplished and some they're striving to accomplish in the future.
After writing about goals and sharing stories from some very impressive people, we discovered something we didn’t anticipate: asking people about their goals – past and present – gives them an easy way to share their story.
And by asking others to share something they were proud of accomplishing and saying something they wanted to achieve in the future aloud, we reinforced two principles we’re passionate about: recognizing your accomplishments and going after what you want.
And just writing these stories didn’t seem to do them justice anymore. It seemed fitting that these inspiring people share their journeys themselves, using their own voices.
And thus, the #WeGotGoals podcast was born. This podcast is hosted by Cindy Kuzma, Maggie Umberger, Kristen Geil and Jeana Anderson Cohen of aSweatLife.
Creating a Solution for Workplace Wellness with Peerfit CEO Ed Buckley
When a lifelong learner falls in love with fitness, you get Edward J. Buckley Jr., CEO of Peerfit (https://peerfit.com/), a universal account for fitness that is accessed as an employee benefit through major insurance providers.
And Buckley and his team didn't just create a better way to do workplace wellness, they did it the hard way - connecting the healthcare and the fitness industries.
“How do you build a bridge between traditional healthcare and all the incentives that go in the fitness industry?” Buckley said, "We like to say, 'it's a billion dollar bridge, we'll build it for you.'"
After years of work proving out the Peerfit model, the group celebrated signing a contract with its first major insurance carrier. But after the champagne bottles (or matcha, it's a fitness company after all), the carrier told them they needed to renegotiate the contract - or they would "tear the contract up."
Overcoming obstacles is a big part of starting a company, but Buckley and team had to fight for their lives. “Put the blinders on and look at the path back up the mountain - not look how far I fell or how could they do this to me," Buckley said.
That attitude to learn and work through mistakes came from an overall lifelong thirst to learn - from pursuing his PhD to sending his board of directors more updates than they need.
"If you’re constantly getting input and you’re constantly learning, you never really have to have a big learning moment," Buckley said.
And to empower his team to learn the same way, Buckley and the company's leadership are less concerned about where their team works and at what hours and are more concerned with rewarding great talent.
Peerfit was recently ranked on the 2018 Top Company Cultures List by Entrepreneur (https://www.entrepreneur.com/top-company-culture), which is a remarkable feat by itself, but even more remarkable when that culture was created entirely digitally. Employees work entirely remotely, which Buckley sees as an advantage to recruit top talent across the country.
That sort of innovative business culture led Peerfit to close its recent round of funding - its $8 million series B - and to create a super-secret startup within the startup that Buckley said will help to double Peerfit’s core business.

How Celebrity Trainer Betina Gozo Sets Goals with Her Gut
Celebrity Trainer Betina Gozo and I met in a gym before "Celebrity Trainer" came before her name, though she's always had a larger-than-life spirit. With a light and infectious energy, she's a human tractor ray.
It was only natural that we took our in-class relationship to the next level: after a few workouts led by Betina, I asked her to be my friend.
And over these years we've seen each other grow, change and evolve. The most marked change took place for Betina after she moved away from her home-town of Chicago - first to Portland, then to Los Angeles.
Today, Betina is the founder of the Dance With Mweyne Foundation, a Nike Global Master Trainer, and sits on the Women's Health Magazine's Advisory Board. She also trains famous people in her spare time.

How Steve Umberger Told an Unheard Community's Story Through Live Theater
On this episode of #WeGotGoals (https://asweatlife.com/category/wegotgoalspodcast/), we heard from Steve Umberger, professional theater director and creative director at Playworks Group. After founding and leading the first and only professional theater company in Charlotte, North Carolina for 25 years, Umberger shifted gears to make what he loved about theater - its ability to connect people on the most human level - the doorway into important conversations our culture tends to shy away from.
Beginning in 2018, he launched two projects that allowed two groups of people - one of a homeless population and one of an aging population inside a nursing home - to share their stories in ways they never told (or would dream of telling) before. Ultimately, the formation of these scripts culminated in two live productions performed for sold-out audiences, plus documentaries filmed throughout the process.
On the podcast, we talk about the impact live theater had on how the audience viewed and interacted with these stories.
"Just like the power to gather in any community—in fitness, or whatever the group is—but in live theater, there is a real union between what's going on on stage and what's happening in the audience," Umberger said. "There's a commonality that begins to happen that literally can change you in lots of ways."
But even more than that, we talk about the impact of community on an even deeper level, for the individuals who participated in the creation of the project in the first place.
"They were very different groups ... the retirement community is set for life, and the homeless population, a very different story ... and yet, both of these groups came to be as tight ... as a real family.
"People are people regardless of their economic status or life circumstances."

David Rabie, Founder and CEO of Tovala, Heats up His Big Goals
Over the years of hosting #WeGotGoals, we’ve heard a lot of founders tell us that they want to “Revolutionize X” or “Shake up Y.” But when David Rabie, the founder and CEO of Tovala (https://www.tovala.com/) told me that he's going to “revolutionize home cooking,” I absolutely believe him.
That's because I talked to him three years ago just after Tovala started selling to the masses, and I've watched the company deliver on the promises they made.
Tovala’s countertop cooking device uses a barcode to tell a smart oven how to combine steaming, convection, broiling and toasting to produce a *chef’s kiss* meal. And they promise less than a minute of prep.
Rabie says that’s all intended to give you “the best parts of home cooking, but none of the messy stuff – like prepping.” Salmon, he said, will steam, bake and broil as it cooks, giving you a perfectly baked, caramelized meal.
But the journey from idea to that smart counter-top oven has been winding, rewarding, and full of the kind of moments that occupy entrepreneurs' dreams. In this week's episode of #WeGotGoals, you'll hear about Tovala's journey to winning the New Venture Challenge at The University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, their time at Y-Combinator, and their successful kick-starter campaign – which, by the way, meant that the company had to build a food production process and fulfill 1,000 orders.
At the time of our interview, Rabie had recently closed a $20 million funding round - the company's Series-B. And as he put it, "Yeah, that's a lot of money."
