Longevity Digest #94: Eye Exercises, Heavy Lifting, and Real Friendships: 8 Science-Backed Habits for Healthy Aging

Healthy aging doesn't come from one fix. It comes from a handful of small daily habits that work together across body and mind. Start the day with five calm minutes instead of your phone. During the day, take a few slow breaths where the exhale is longer than the inhale, which can help keep stress hormones in check. Build meals around beans and lentils, a handful of nuts, green tea, fermented foods, broccoli-family vegetables and olive oil. Lift weights two to three times a week and aim for about 30 grams of protein per meal to protect muscle and bone. A couple of minutes of eye-focusing exercises plus time in outdoor light can help keep vision and balance sharp. Paying attention to snoring or mouth-breathing can also lead to deeper, more restorative sleep. And don't overlook friendship: the Harvard Study of Adult Development, running for more than 85 years, found that close relationships were one of the strongest predictors of staying healthy and sharp into the 80s and 90s. Together, these habits may help lower inflammation, reduce the risk of falls and fractures, support heart and brain health, and keep your energy and independence as you age. Longevity Digest #93: How to Age Slower - Sleep, Strength Training, and the Blood Tests That Spot Trouble Early

This episode combines targeted cellular support—such as taking 2 to 3 grams of daily glycine to mimic methionine restriction and consuming raw microalgae to supply protective antioxidant enzymes—with early diagnostic tracking like LPIR and ApoB testing to catch insulin resistance long before glucose levels rise. It protects physical function by integrating brief daily movement "snacks" and progressive resistance training to preserve bone mineral density, joint mobility, and muscle mass. Underpinning these habits, targeting a 6.4 to 7.8-hour sleep window and prioritizing regular face-to-face social connection help regulate overnight cellular repair and reduce chronic physiological stress. Together, these evidence-based practices work to slow multi-organ biological aging, lower cardiovascular and metabolic disease risks, preserve cognitive brain volume, and maintain high physical energy into late age. Longevity Digest #90: Muscle Is Your Longevity Organ - Protein, Creatine, GLP-1 & the Brain

What determines whether you simply live longer—or stay strong, sharp, and independent as you age? Muscle is emerging as one of the most important foundations of healthy aging. In this episode of Longevity Digest, we explore how protein, resistance training, creatine, GLP-1 medications, sleep, circadian health, mitochondrial function, and brain health intersect to influence healthspan. We look at why maintaining muscle and bone becomes increasingly important with age—and why high-protein nutrition combined with progressive resistance training may be especially important during weight loss. We also examine the rapidly evolving conversation around GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, including the importance of protecting lean mass and bone while improving metabolic health. But longevity extends beyond muscle. We explore creatine and citicoline for cellular energy and cognitive performance, the concept of building cognitive reserve to protect the aging brain, and how morning habits, exercise, learning, and social connection may contribute to long-term brain resilience. We also examine several less obvious longevity tools—from morning sunlight and circadian alignment to red and near-infrared light therapy, intracellular hydration, calf-muscle activation, and spending more time outdoors in nature. The central message is simple: living longer matters, but maintaining the muscle, brain, energy, mobility, and independence to enjoy those extra years matters even more. Longevity Digest #89: 10 Ways to Slow Aging - NAD+, Mitophagy, Nitric Oxide, Steps & More

What can you do today to live longer and stay healthier as you age? In this episode of Longevity Digest, we explore 10 science-backed longevity protocols designed to improve healthspan, metabolic health, cardiovascular function, muscle strength, sleep, brain health, and stress resilience. Discover why morning sunlight and 6,000–10,000 daily steps may be two of the simplest foundations for healthy aging; how dietary nitrates and nitric oxide support blood pressure and vascular health; why Urolithin A and mitophagy are attracting attention for mitochondrial and muscle health; and how researchers are approaching NAD+ recycling, biological-age testing, C15, sulforaphane, hormone optimization, and long-exhale breathwork. We also examine how brief 30–90 second breathing breaks and deliberate breathwork may help shift the nervous system toward recovery and reduce stress. The goal: turn emerging longevity science into practical strategies you can understand—and potentially incorporate into everyday life.
