    108 | Heifer in Heat, Broken Fences & Spring Homestead Prep (Calves, Meat Birds & Pasture Plans)

    Spring has officially arrived on our homestead—and with it comes a whole lot of energy, preparation, and a little bit of chaos. In today’s episode, I’m sharing what’s really going on with our cows right now, including the clear signs that my young heifer is in heat… even though she’s still very small and definitely not ready to be bred. From mounting behavior and zoomies to major personality shifts, I’m walking you through exactly what I’m seeing and how it’s affecting training. On top of that, we’re dealing with two bulls next door and a fencing situation that’s already been tested (and damaged), which adds a whole new level of urgency to everything. But it’s not just challenges—we’re also deep in spring homestead prep. I share how we’re getting ready for a future calf, including planning for bottle feeding if needed, stocking up on jars and lids, and taking the next step into making more food from scratch with cheese making. We’re also focusing on improving our land by ordering grass seed to build healthier pasture for our cows and future horses—because good soil is the foundation of everything. And finally, we just placed our order for 125 meat birds arriving this June. After raising 75 last summer (and still enjoying the last of that meat!), I’m sharing why it’s been so worth it for our family.
