WP#30: Why Your Child Falls Apart After School

Your child holds it together all day at school. Then they get home… and everything falls apart. The meltdowns. The irritability. The homework battles. The inability to sit still. The child who is exhausted but somehow still wired at bedtime. It’s easy to look at these moments as a behavior problem. But what if the behavior is actually giving you information about how much your child’s nervous system has been asked to handle? In this episode of The Wellness Path Podcast, Dr. Vic breaks down the concept of neurological load versus neurological capacity and why some children can seemingly handle an entire day of school while others reach their limit by the end of the afternoon. Think about your child’s nervous system like a bucket. School. Poor sleep. Screens. Social interactions. Sports. Homework. Sensory stimulation. Busy schedules. Nutrition. Emotional stress. They all add something to the bucket. When there is still room, your child may adapt without much difficulty. But when that bucket is overflowing, something as simple as putting on shoes, brushing teeth, starting homework, or getting ready for bed can become the thing that pushes them over the edge. The shoes weren’t necessarily the problem. The question becomes: Did their nervous system have enough capacity left to handle one more demand? Dr. Vic walks parents through a different way of looking at regulation — activate, perform, adapt, and recover — and explains why recovery may be one of the most overlooked pieces for children today. What You’ll LearnWhy a child can behave completely differently at school versus at homeWhat Dr. Vic means by neurological “load vs. capacity”Why stress itself isn’t necessarily the problemHow sleep and consistent routines support recoveryWhy screen timing may matter as much as total screen timeHow sensory overload can quietly exhaust a child throughout the school dayWhy movement is neurological input — not simply exerciseHow to create a transition or decompression period after schoolWhat the brainstem, vestibular system, autonomic nervous system, primitive reflexes, and posture can tell us about regulationSimple ways parents can begin observing their child’s capacity at homeWhen patterns like chronic sleep difficulties, sensory sensitivity, poor coordination, headaches, difficulty transitioning, or persistent focus problems may deserve a closer look Key Quote“Instead of asking, ‘How do we stop the meltdown?’ ask, ‘What is this behavior telling me about their capacity right now?’” The goal isn’t to remove every stressor from your child’s life. Kids are supposed to experience challenges. They are supposed to learn, move, play, compete, adapt, recover, and grow. The bigger question is whether their nervous system has the capacity to handle the life they are being asked to live. If you’re in the Knoxville, Maryville, or Morristown, Tennessee area and want to understand how your child’s nervous system is functioning, The Wellness Path uses a neurological-first approach to evaluate areas such as balance, eye movements, reflexes, coordination, posture, autonomic regulation, and neurological capacity. 📞 Connect With Us: Email: info@wellnesspathchiro.com · Call or Text: 865-214-7438 · Website: wellnesspathchiro.com 🧠 Free Parent Quiz: Is Your Child's Nervous System Stuck in Survival Mode? 👉 wellnesspathchiro.com/child-nervous-system-quiz 📅 Book a Discovery Day: Never had your nervous system measured? WPP#29: Nervous System Dysregulation

Everyone is talking about “regulating your nervous system.” Breathwork. Cold plunges. Meditation. Vagus nerve stimulation. Somatic exercises. But what if nervous system regulation isn’t actually about being calm? In this episode of The Wellness Path Podcast, Dr. Vic Manzo breaks down what nervous system dysregulation really means and why a healthy nervous system is designed to do one thing extremely well: adapt. Using the analogy of a gas pedal and brake pedal, Dr. Vic explains why fight-or-flight isn’t the enemy. You need your sympathetic nervous system to wake up, focus, exercise, perform and respond to challenges. The real issue is when your system has difficulty shifting back into recovery once the challenge has passed. So instead of only asking, “How do I calm my nervous system?” a better question may be: “Why isn’t my nervous system adapting the way it should?” What You’ll Learn: Why regulation does not mean being calm 24/7The difference between the neurological “gas pedal” and “brake pedal”Why fight-or-flight is a necessary part of a healthy nervous systemHow sleep changes, digestive issues under stress, tension, overwhelm and difficulty transitioning can reflect poor adaptabilityWhy vagus nerve stimulation, breathwork and other tools can help — but may not address why the nervous system became stuck in the first placeHow the brainstem processes information from the eyes, vestibular system, joints, muscles, breathing, gut and environmentWhy movement, proprioception, sleep, sunlight, exercise and human interaction all matter to neurological functionWhy Dr. Vic believes function should be measured instead of assuming someone is “dysregulated” based on symptomsHow The Wellness Path evaluates seven neurological centers: brainstem, vestibular, autonomic, right and left cortex, and right and left cerebellumWhat the NeuroSync Efficiency Index (NEI) is designed to show — and what it does not diagnoseWhy chiropractic is about more than neck pain, back pain and headachesWhy adaptability may be one of the most important markers of nervous system healthKey Quote: “Adaptability is going to be determined by function. And function is going to be regulated by the nervous system.” — Dr. Vic Manzo If you’ve been hearing about nervous system dysregulation, vagus nerve hacks and “getting out of fight-or-flight,” this episode gives you a deeper framework for understanding what regulation really means. WPP#28: Why Brain-Body Communication Is the Missing Measurement in Modern Healthcare

Welcome back to a brand new season of The Wellness Path Podcast. In this season opener, Dr. Vic introduces NeuroSync — the clinical framework behind everything The Wellness Path does — and explains why most people have never had the one system that controls everything actually measured. If you've ever felt "off" without a clear reason, struggled with sleep, focus, digestion or mood, or watched your child deal with issues that nothing seems to fully resolve, this episode is your starting point. What You'll Learn: What NeuroSync is and the science behind it (hemispheric synchronization)Why symptoms are always the LAST thing to appear — by the time you feel pain, dysfunction has been building for yearsWhat a subluxation really means — a software issue affecting your hardwareHow The Wellness Path measures your nervous system through a hands-on functional neurological exam, scoring seven regions — brainstem, vestibular, autonomic, both cerebellar hemispheres and both cortical hemispheres — on a five-tier scale from Critical to OptimalWhat your NeuroSync Efficiency Index (NEI) score tells you, and what it doesn'tWhat the 2016 neuroplasticity research showed about a single adjustment and prefrontal cortex activityWhy kids' symptoms resolving isn't the same as the nervous system being correctedWhat parents report most after their kids start care — and why it matters more than symptom reliefKey Quote: "Symptoms are always the last to appear. By the time pain, fatigue and anxiety show up, there's been a decade or more of underlying dysregulation building underneath." — Dr. Vic Manzo 📄 Full Transcript: wellnesspathchiro.com/podcast/neurosync-brain-body-communication-missing-measurement/ 📞 Connect With Us: Email: info@wellnesspathchiro.com · Call or Text: 865-214-7438 · Website: wellnesspathchiro.com 🧠 Free Parent Quiz: Is Your Child's Nervous System Stuck in Survival Mode? 👉 wellnesspathchiro.com/child-nervous-system-quiz 📅 Book a Discovery Day: Never had your nervous system measured? WPP#27: The Second Brain in the Diaper

What if the single most powerful predictor of your child’s IQ, emotional regulation, and anxiety levels wasn’t genetics, their school, or even your parenting strategy? What if it lived in their diaper? In this eye-opening episode of The Wellness Path, Dr. Vic Manzo dives into the cutting-edge neuroscience of the Gut-Brain Axis. We explore how an infant's "second brain"—the enteric nervous system—houses over 500 million neurons and acts as the tactical commander for the brain in their head. From the "Vaginal Seed" of birth to the impact of the first 1,000 days, Dr. Vic reveals why the bacteria in your baby's gut are actually the architects of their neural circuits. What You’ll Learn in This Episode:Two Brains, One Body: Why the gut contains more nerve cells than the entire spinal cord. The Vagus Nerve Highway: How 80-90% of signals travel up from the gut to the brain, not the other way around.Serotonin & GABA: The shocking truth that 90-95% of the body's serotonin (the "feel-good" chemical) is produced in the gut, not the brain. The HPA Axis & Anxiety: Why "germ-free" environments in early life can lead to hyperactive stress responses and emotional dysregulation.Antibiotic Debt: The long-term cost of early antibiotic use and how it alters gut-brain communication for months or even years. The "First 1,000 Days": Why the window from conception to the second birthday is the most critical time for neurological programming. The Gut-Brain Connection: A Neurological LadderThe Architect (Microbiome)Role: The foundational biological builder of the body's internal environment.Impact of Healthy Gut: Produces Butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that protects the blood-brain barrier and reduces neural inflammation. The Messenger (Vagus Nerve)Role: The high-speed neurological highway connecting the gut and the brain.Impact of Healthy Gut: Transmits vital calming signals like GABA and Serotonin directly to the brain to regulate mood and sleep. The Shield (Immune System)Role: The body's primary defense and surveillance system.Impact of Healthy Gut: Properly "trains" the immune system to accurately distinguish between a real threat and a safe environment, reducing allergies and sensitivities. The Top Floor (Cognitive IQ)Role: The center for executive function, language, and logic.Impact of Healthy Gut: Healthy gut-brain communication directly influences higher-level functions, including language development and complex problem-solving abilities. Take Action: Empowering Your Child’s HealthWhether you are currently pregnant, have a newborn, or are raising a teenager, you are not helpless. You can optimize these pillars at any stage: Prioritize Probiotics: Focus on soil-based probiotics and fermented foods.Support the Vagus Nerve: Utilize neuro-focused chiropractic care to clear "static" and improve vagal tone.Be Antibiotic Thoughtful: Minimize use when possible and focus on aggressive gut recovery afterward. WPP#26 - Kids Glitch In Their Foundation

Overview In this episode, Dr. Vic Manzo challenges the traditional view of ADHD, reframing it not as a behavioral defiance but as a neurological "glitch" in a child's foundation. He explains how many children diagnosed with ADHD are actually trapped in a body running on "infant survival software," where primitive reflexes that should have integrated in infancy remain active, causing constant overstimulation and physical exhaustion. The Neurodevelopmental Ladder Dr. Vic describes the brain's development as a four-story building. If the lower floors are unstable, the top floor (learning and emotional control) cannot function optimally. Here is the breakdown of the Neurological Developmental Ladder as discussed in the episode, organized by how your child’s brain builds its foundation: Level 1: The Basement (Brainstem)Focus: Primitive Reflexes & SurvivalFunction: This is the "automatic" center. It is designed to move a baby from horizontal to vertical.Impact if "Glitched": The child stays stuck in "Survival Software." This leads to constant fight-or-flight, high anxiety, and a shaky foundation that disrupts every level of growth above it. Level 2: The GPS (Cerebellum)Focus: Vestibular System & BalanceFunction: Controls spatial awareness and knowing where the body is in space. It strengthens the "vertical" process.Impact if "Glitched": Results in "static" in the nervous system. You'll see poor coordination, "clumsiness," and a lack of physical balance. Level 3: The Software (Midbrain)Focus: Ocular System & Sensory FilteringFunction: Manages eye tracking, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to filter out background noise/stimuli.Impact if "Glitched": The child cannot filter sensory input, leading to overstimulation. It causes eye fatigue and makes reading physically exhausting. Level 4: The Top Floor (Cortex)Focus: Executive Function & Higher LearningFunction: The home of reading, math, language, and emotional control.Impact if "Glitched": This is where the "Third Grade Wall" happens. You see emotional outbursts, learning disabilities, and a struggle with impulse control because the lower levels are stealing all the brain's energy. The Three Key Reflexes Linked to ADHD Dr. Vic highlights three specific primitive reflexes that, when not integrated, mimic the symptoms of ADHD: The Moro (Startle) Reflex: Keeps the child in a state of high cortisol and anxiety. It is the "fight or flight" reflex that should turn off at four months. The ATNR (Fencer) Reflex: Makes the physical act of writing and reading exhausting. If a child's arm wants to extend every time they turn their head, they cannot focus on the page. The Spinal Galant (The Wiggler): Any touch to the back triggers a hip wiggle. This is the "fidgety" child who cannot stay in their seat and often struggles with bedwetting. The Cost of Inaction: Neurological Debt A critical takeaway is the concept of Neurological Debt. Dr. Vic warns that children do not "grow out" of these issues; they simply compensate. This compensation is "metabolically expensive," with some children using 90% of their energy just to sit still, leaving only 10% for actual learning. Over time, this leads to burnout, shattered self-esteem, and chronic anxiety by age 12. The Path to Regulation The solution lies in neuro-focused chiropractic care. By clearing the "static" in the nervous system—particularly in the C1, C2, and occiput area—chiropractic adjustments allow the brain to move out of sympathetic dominance (the gas pedal) and into a parasympathetic state (the brake pedal) where healing and integration can finally occur. WPP#25: The Internal Architect

Episode Summary: The Quiet Epidemic—Mouth Breathing, Tongue Ties, and Your Child’s NeurologyAre you seeing dark circles under your child’s eyes? Do they sleep with their mouth open, or have you noticed they’ve started snoring? While often dismissed as "cute" or just a phase, these are actually red flags for a quiet epidemic affecting the development of our children. In this episode of The Wellness Path, Dr. Vic Manzo dives deep into the intricate relationship between oral function, cranial structure, and the nervous system. He breaks down why the tongue is the "internal architect" of the face and how early intervention can prevent a lifetime of health hurdles. What You’ll Learn in This Episode:The Internal Architect: Why breastfeeding is about more than just nutrients—it’s a workout that shapes the hard palate and skull. The Cranial Connection: How birth trauma (C-sections, forceps, or prolonged labor) can shift the sphenoid and occiput bones, impacting the nerves that control the tongue. The Neurological Cascade: How mouth breathing traps a child in Sympathetic Overdrive (fight-or-flight), potentially leading to symptoms that mimic ADHD and sensory processing issues. The Nitric Oxide Factor: The vital role of nasal breathing in oxygenating the brain and supporting the immune system to prevent chronic ear infections and enlarged tonsils.A Collaborative Path to Healing: Why Dr. Vic works alongside lactation consultants and airway-focused dentists to restore "vagal tone" and help the body self-regulate. WPP#23: Chiropractic Insights: Nurturing Your Child's Neurological Growth

Why are so many children today overstimulated, anxious, and struggling with focus, coordination, and emotional regulation? The answer may lie in a hidden, unresolved issue from their earliest days of life. In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Vic Manzo, a certified pediatric chiropractor, pulls back the curtain on Primitive Reflexes—the survival reflexes every baby is born with that are supposed to "turn off" as the brain develops. Dr. Vic reveals how a stressful birth process or early trauma can cause these reflexes to stay "stuck" or active, creating a domino effect that disrupts your child's entire neurological development. He breaks down the four critical layers of brain development and explains how a single stuck reflex can lead to challenges in balance (vestibular), hand-eye coordination (ocular), and even language, cognition, and behavior. If your child has been labeled as clumsy, anxious, or struggling with focus, this episode provides a powerful, hopeful new perspective. Learn how specific, gentle chiropractic care, combined with primitive reflex integration, can help "reset" the nervous system, close the "brain gap," and help your child not just cope, but truly thrive.
