Whatever Comes Next with Tom Osman

Getting to know the music makers out on the fringes

On Whatever Comes Next I explore the world of independent and underground music making. I talk with music makers, producers and label owners to hear their stories. I like music with a sense of mystery. I like surprises and unique stories... and noise... and weirdness... and darkness... and I want to learn more. tomosman.substack.com

Episode 96: Blake Fleming (Dazzling Killmen)

In a musical career that's spanned decades, many projects, several solo releases and becoming a published author Blake Fleming first made a name for himself in the 90s as the teenage drummer for post-hardcore group Dazzling Killmen. Having built an enduring relationship with SKiN GRAFT Records, the band split in 1995. Now 30 years later, as a new iteration of Dazzling Killmen gets back together (original members Blake, Nick Sakes and new recruits Ben Greenberg and Evan Jagles), SKiN GRAFT Records is set to release the long-out-of-print Dazzling Killmen debut Dig Out The Switch (originally recorded by Steve Albini and remastered by Andris Balins and Blake Fleming). Blake joins me to discuss his musical origins, the early days of Dazzling Killmen, working with Steve Albini and Jeff Tweedy on Dig Out The Switch, his solo career, writing The Book of Rhythm and some of his other ongoing projects. Closing track: Serpentarium Thanks to Mark at SKiN GRAFT Records Visit Blake's website Order Dig Out The Switch Check out Dazzling Killmen's upcoming tour dates on Instagram or facebook Check out my latest album Real Silence on Drama Recorder Podcast artwork and logo: https://www.garjk.com/ Intro music: "Detachment" by Tom Osman This is a public episode. Episode 93: Jon Fine (We Contain Multitudes)

Guitarist, editor and writer Jon Fine came up in the US indie-rock movement of the 1980s, most notably with rock trio B***h Magnet. In his engrossing memoir of a decade ago Your Band Sucks, Jon gives an entertaining and insightful look at how the indie-rock landscape evolved over those years and his part in it. Having at times extracted himself from an underground, DIY music world that doesn't always give back what is put into it, Fine is back and as energised as ever with his current instrumental-rock three-piece We Contain Multitudes (including former B***h Magnet drummer Orestes Morfin, as well as bassist Simon Kobayashi). Back in June the band released their great, weaving, winding (and rocking) debut Minako, and I interviewed Jon for New Noise Magazine Now Jon graciously sits down to talk with me again as we dive into the world of DIY music in more depth. Last month I bit the bullet and said, "ok, I'm really working on this book about underground, DIY music" and this episode is probably the most in depth discussion I've had about the realities of DIY music making. Of course we also talk We Contain Multitudes, Minako and what the band has planned for the future.
