Ryan Durbin (@rdceramics) & Becca Otis (@5linespottery) share their experiences as potters, makers, small business owners, and creatives. Becca is a full time studio potter, while Ryan is a full time website developer and part time potter. We'd love to share our ups and downs along the way as we build our skills as makers and small business owners in an honest, informal manner. We hope to bring you helpful tips we've learned over the years, learn from each other, and share expertise from a number of guests with you also. Please join us for some Wheel Talk!

#249 - Calculated risk-taking
Ryan & Becca are back together once again to discuss risk taking in our businesses. What's the most risk we've taken lately, how do we think through risks we're willing to take, how having a support system influences our decisions, and how do we prepare ourselves when something doesn't go right. We hope you enjoy our discussion today.

Ryan & Becca are proud to share the topic of "Resources for your business" live at the NCECA 2024 clay conference hosted in Richmond, VA. We hope you enjoy the discussion as we share how our friends and peers become some of the best resources for our businesses. Thanks to Ben Carter (Tales of the Red Clay Rambler) and NCECA for co-producing the podcast and graciously invited us back for the NCECA podcast room. Also, thanks to everyone who came to our talk in-person and asked questions live. Enjoy and we hope to see you at a future conference!
2025 NCECA LIVE PODCAST PROPOSALS - Deadline THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2024 (11:59PM EDT)
Live Podcasts are recorded 60-minute engaging and thought-provoking conversations between two or three podcast panelists and one moderator. Podcast presentations focus on thematic discussions that encourage audience feedback and participation. If a moderator is not identified in the proposal, the Podcast Room Coordinator will work with accepted proposal groups to pair them with one. Customer Reviews
I love this potcast!
I stumbled across this potcast because of Ryan posting an ultra-organized graphic of his earnings on Instagram. I was intrigued because Ryan has a full time job and is doing this for funsies. I’m hooked and am listening to the potcast from the very beginning—I’m on Becca’s Big News potcast now, where she is announcing her move to the Midwest. I REALLY REALLY want to skip ahead past their pandemic episodes but I have FOMO and don’t want to miss out on something, whatever that might be. I’m a new business owner and just started my pottery side hustle while working my full time job. Thank you for the inspiration and relatable content! You’re POT-tastic and POTABULOUS! ♥️
A perfect listen for long studio sessions!
At first the length and format of this show seemed long to me, and then I turned it on while throwing and trimming… and my opinion totally changed!
I love hearing longtime potters chatting / talking shop, and hearing from others they bring on as guests is also great. Thanks you two for doing this! It makes me feel less alone while working in my home studio space!

I always learn something
As a newbie I alway learn something new on the podcast. Listening has turned into a Saturday morning ritual while drinking my morning coffee. I love to new 2 hour format!! I like ver the interview with Link Henderson, so informative.
This week I learned why beer steins must be very smooth on the inside. I’m always learning something.
