    Special Birthday Request from Lexi

A Special Invitation from When the Bough Breaks 🎂 A little birthday request from me and an opportunity for the estrangement community. I’ve recently been contacted by British TV producer Rachel Forbes, who is conducting early research for a potential U.S.-based documentary series exploring family estrangement. Rachel works with Raw TV, the London-based production company behind projects including Three Identical Strangers and The Crash. The proposed series would take a thoughtful, honest and compassionate look at family estrangement—including why families become estranged, the realities of low or no contact, and the complicated question of reconciliation. As part of this early research, Rachel is hoping to speak confidentially with people who have experienced family estrangement or family breakdown. She is particularly interested in hearing from people on different sides of an estrangement and learning about the experiences that don’t always make it into the public conversation. This is very early-stage research. The series has not currently been commissioned or scheduled for broadcast. An initial conversation with Rachel is confidential and comes with no obligation to participate further. So, if you’ve ever listened to When the Bough Breaks and thought, “More people need to understand this,” this is an opportunity to help that conversation reach an even wider audience. And since my birthday is coming up, I’m making a small request: instead of buying me something, share this with someone who might be interested.  Consider it my very subtle birthday pressure. Interested in learning more? Contact Rachel Forbes directly: rachel.forbes@raw.co.uk You can also learn more about Raw TV and their work at raw.co.uk. Please share this with anyone in the estrangement community who may want to have their experience heard. ⸻ Tags #WhenTheBoughBreaks #FamilyEstrangement #Estrangement #EstrangedParents #EstrangedAdultChildren #NoContact #LowContact #FamilyRelationships #FamilyBreakdown #Reconciliation #MentalHealth #HealingFromEstrangement #EstrangementCommunity #FamilyTherapy #PodcastCommunity #LivedExperience #FamilyDynamics Send us Fan Mail Support the show

CPTSD: The Ultimate Time-loop (and the ship that keeps exploding.)

CPTSD: The Ultimate Time Loop (and the Starship That Keeps Exploding) Living with complex trauma can feel like being trapped in a time loop. Not a memory—but many of them. All active. All urgent. All happening now. In this solo episode, Alexis explores CPTSD through an unexpected but painfully accurate lens: a classic Star Trek: The Next Generation episode where the Enterprise keeps exploding—over and over—while the crew senses something is wrong long before they consciously remember why. CPTSD isn’t about being “stuck in the past.” It’s about the past reloading itself into the present through your nervous system’s red alert system. Tone shifts, pauses, power imbalances—even the anticipation of something good—can trigger alarms that feel overwhelming and confusing. Alexis breaks down: Why your body remembers what your mind can’tHow “coping” can accidentally reset the loop instead of ending itWhy awareness often feels worse before it feels betterThe difference between control and choice in trauma healingHow recognizing memory states—not fighting them—is how the ship finally stops exploding With honesty, humor, and a deeply personal story, this episode offers language for experiences many trauma survivors live with quietly—and reassurance that you are not broken. You’re responding exactly the way a system trained for survival would. Autopilot kept you alive. Awareness is where choice returns. If this episode resonates, you’re not alone—and you’re not imagining it. Send us Fan Mail Support the show

    Grief/Depression? Which is it?

Grief and depression are often treated as the same thing—but they’re not. And confusing the two can leave people feeling broken, misdiagnosed, or deeply misunderstood. In this special Christmas Eve “Healing for the Holidays” episode of When the Bough Breaks, Alexis explores the nuanced differences between grief and depression, where they overlap, and why so many people struggle to name what they’re actually experiencing. Through lived insight and grounded reflection, this episode dismantles the pressure to “heal on a timeline” and challenges the idea that ongoing grief is a personal failure. If you’ve ever wondered why time didn’t fix it, why therapy didn’t “solve” it, or why you feel functional but still profoundly heavy—this episode is for you. This is not a diagnostic episode. It’s a human one. 1. Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (U.S.) Call or Text: 988 Available 24/7, free and confidential.
