Update, 11/16/25: Now we’re feeling performative. It’s also clear there’s tension between the hosts. Patrick, please stop centering yourself on literally every topic. Do y’all even listen to your own episodes anymore? Even taking the week between each episode, it’s still exhausting to hear how every situation is something Patrick has been through. Also, Gillian is allowed to have opinions that are different whether you’re friends with someone or not (talking about Skye, and in that instance, GP was right to point out a gross mistep in vital missing information). The latest episode tallied up how many bonus episodes there were and excitedly exclaimed there would be even more next year. I remember being pleasantly surprised by the first round of Unsolved Mysteries bonus episodes during the holidays, and looking forward to that the next year. Now I wish they would just stop. Someone asked me the other day why I still listen if I get angry or frustrated every episode, and I’m just waiting for the fallout. Neither host will admit they’re torpedoing the show by forcing it out instead of taking a much needed step back to reassess what they’re actually trying to accomplish anymore.

I was a Patreon subscriber, but had to stop when the ads for the live shows got so overwhelming. If someone is on the Patreon, they’re hearing the same info multiple times a week. They’re already interested, and they’re already paying you. But now Patrick and Gillian are being unsafe about it. They used to encourage people who wanted to come but had no one to come with to come anyway. Now they’re not only saying, “come alone!” They’re also saying, “advertise yourself as being alone!” It’s so unsafe. It’s like they have forgotten that they’re a true crime podcast and why true crime exists. True crime is largely consumed by women and female presenting people, and queer folk, who all consume it to learn what not to do to stay safe. Encouraging people to advertise themselves as being alone, possibly in a location they’re unfamiliar with, is so dangerous. They’ve become so out of touch, it’s frustrating to think of how fun and interesting they used to be compared to how corporate they are now. Their scripted content sounds scripted now, and they don’t seem to care about what they’re discussing anymore. It’s become a cash grab and a way to “one-up” other podcasters by discussing the same content weeks after the other shows release an episode about it. They are trying to prove they’re still relevant, but they just sound like they’re tired of the job. It’s okay to stop when you don’t like doing something anymore. It’s also okay to take a break and regroup, instead of over-saturating your content by increasing your output to overcompensate for the loss of listeners.
My advice to new listeners is to go back to the beginning. They were way more fun back then.
