Whooping Crane Chronicles
Twice a year, whooping cranes travel 2,500 miles between the vast wilderness of Wood Buffalo National Park in northern Canada and the salt marshes of the Texas Gulf Coast. Along their journey, they cross the expansive Great Plains and navigate fragmented landscapes, industrial agriculture, energy development, urban sprawl, and extreme weather. So, we beg to ask the question: Can whooping cranes survive us and our 21st-century world? Whooping cranes are a federally endangered species, once diminished to a population of less than 20, but with human help, they persisted. Today, there are more than 800 whooping cranes in the world. Conservation photographer and writer Mike Forsberg spent five years chronicling their hidden lives for his newest book, "Into Whooperland". The Whooping Crane Chronicles podcast builds on these stories, as Mike speaks with scientists, artists, and landowners connected by their love for whooping cranes. Their conversations reflect hardship, success, sorrow, and joy. The series showcases the natural history and beauty of whooping cranes through the voices of those who know them best. It is a collection of stories to learn from, to ponder, and to celebrate–inviting listeners to feel something, anything, in the hope of keeping these birds around for generations to come.
