The 100-client ceiling is a software problem

Every good advisor eventually runs into the same number. Somewhere near a hundred clients the practice stops growing, and the industry gave the cap flattering names afterwards. For some advisors that shape was a choice. For most it was a wall. McKinsey projects the industry will be short roughly 100,000 advisors by 2034. You don't close a gap that size by recruiting harder, and every capped practice is capacity the industry already trained and cannot use. The advisor at capacity spends eight or nine hours a week in front of clients. The relationship ceiling is barely drawn on. What's exhausted is everything wrapped around those hours — and underneath that, getting a household's information into usable shape in the first place. That is work nearly no human actually wants, and it gets skipped by most people building software for this industry because it's unglamorous and doesn't demo well. Raising the ceiling is half of it, and the less interesting half. Three floors move at the same time: who can be served, who can deliver, and who you can build a team out of. The last one is where a practice actually grows or doesn't — plenty of practices that look capped at a hundred clients are capped at the first hire the owner couldn't afford to get wrong.
