Recently, my parents moved. And because of the move, I began receiving their forwarded mail. One of the items was a gardening magazine my mom would read. Because I enjoy gardening, I figured I’d check it out.

Interestingly enough, the articles were not about gardening as much as they were about mental health: dealing with life’s ups and downs. Events in the various authors’ lives, and the reflections and lessons learned. This episode is the result of that reading.

I am reading 4 of the short articles from the magazine. It’s called “Green Prints”, and this issue specifically is called, “The Weeder’s Reader.” Each article is separated with the least annoying sound effect I could find, and I give the title of the article as well.

What does fair treatment and equality for women look like? What is the value of all the things women, and particularly mothers, do? How much should women be paid? Fall is beginning. That means winter is coming. Nothing new there - it's been happening for thousands of years. But before we move on or start looking ahead too soon, we should slow down and smell the... pumpkins? Maybe not. But we should slow down and think for a while - not about the world or even your nation, but you...personally.  What is happening in your life and what future are you headed towards?  How have you actually grown so far this year?  These questions are easy to ask and read (or listen to), but will we take the time to consider and answer them?  This episode is not a conversation. I am reading two articles from the Fall 2022 edition of the Magnolia Journal. I'm reading it because I found them useful and hope you will as well. But also, to use it as a way to ask you: what are you reading? You must have more than your own thoughts in your mind. You must have more content than whatever youtube video or social media channel you follow. There is immense benefit in taking time to read, consider, think. Stop watching screens and READ. Your mind will benefit as well as your body, and it helps you slow down and be present in wherever you are and whatever season of life you are in right now. Thank you for listening to this episode. "Wash your hands." 

We saw signs and ads everywhere for the past 2 years telling us to do this - something we learned to do when we were 3 years old. I remember visiting a college campus in 2021 and seeing those signs up in the bathrooms. I thought, "Seriously? Our up-and-coming, brightest-minds-of-the-future have to be told do something this elementary?" I'm not making light of the situation we all know too well but simply pointing out that physical hygiene is something we learn as children.

But what about mental hygiene?

In this episode, I am reading an article published by the Amen Clinics. This clinic was established by Dr. Daniel Amen (what a last name, right?), and you can find it in the link provided in the show notes. I have learned so much through their articles, podcasts, YouTube videos and books over the previous 2 and a half years. I thought it would be appropriate to feature this simple, yet very effective WINNING practice in an episode.
