Why Can't I Just Get Started?

“I spent a whole weekend, easily 20 hours in the office, to try and do a powerpoint presentation, and I still only did it on Monday morning. That's when I took the step that I need to speak to a mental health professional.” In this episode of Wired to WORK Differently, we speak with Himanshu Chowdhury, Managing Director in Financial Services, about his experiences navigating the workplace with dyslexia and ADHD. Himanshu shares his struggles with getting started on seemingly simple tasks, how his difficulties with procrastination have often been mistaken for laziness, and why corporate support plays an important role in helping neurodivergent employees seek help and thrive at work. We also explore the practical strategies he has developed to manage his executive function challenges, from self-experimentation and building routines to finding ways to make that crucial first step easier. Key Takeaways from the episode  1. Knowing what to do doesn't always mean knowing how to start. The biggest barrier is often not the task itself, but taking that first step. Breaking tasks into tiny actions can make that first step easier. 2. Replace assumptions with experiments. Instead of asking, "Why am I so bad at this?",ask, "What's getting in the way?" Small experiments, like tracking how long tasks really take or testing new routines, can uncover solutions that self-criticism never will. 3. Work with how your brain is wired, rather than working against it. You don't need to work harder. You need systems, support, and strategies that work for you. The biggest obstacle is often not the work itself but getting started, and the way forward is through curiosity, experimentation, and building systems that work with how you're wired. About the Guest Himanshu is a corporate leader in the banking industry and an active advocate for mental health. As someone who has spent much of his corporate career driving change in complex organisations, he continues to change his own ways of working while learning how to work with, rather than against, his differently wired brain. Beyond his day job, Himanshu has been involved with Singapore’s ADHD community, including serving as a director of Unlocking ADHD and has become increasingly open about his own experience of neurodivergence. He is also a husband, father, lifelong learner and enthusiastic experimenter in personal growth, constantly exploring how environment, habits, purpose and self-awareness can help people thrive. When Your Working Styles Clash

What happens when two capable people simply work very differently? In this episode, we speak with People Consultant & Fractional HR Leader Wendy Yeo about the unwritten rules and hidden expectations of the workplace. We explore how clashes in communication, planning and working styles can lead to misunderstandings, why we often mistake our preferred way of working for the “professional” one, and how these expectations can create additional challenges for neurodivergent employees . We also discuss what managers and colleagues can do to bridge these differences, communicate expectations more clearly and build a more inclusive workplace where people can succeed without having to work in exactly the same way. Key Takeaways from the episode  Be curious, not furious. Be curious about what circumstances led to the situation. Pause before judging, replace assumptions with questions and focus on circumstances, not character. Different doesn't mean deficient. Effective leaders adapt to different working styles. Success comes from understanding different working styles and needs, and leveraging unique talents. Build systems, not assumptions. Write down decisions after a meeting, clarify expectations and confirm next steps. This will help to understand what is expected and keep everyone on the same page. About the Guest With over 20 years of experience in Learning and Development, Organizational Transformation and HR leadership, Wendy brings a unique blend of strategic vision, operational depth, and a deep passion for people and culture. Little known to people from her years of commercial career, her interest in growing others was first sparked by volunteer endeavors as an undergraduate, working with neurodivergent children and underprivileged youths. Then, the sheer curiosity about social justice and ‘gungho’ impetus to help the underserved, spurred her foray into youth rehabilitation. The desire to take her impact upstream into prevention work saw Wendy venture next into The Singapore Armed Forces, Centre of Leadership Development as a psychologist, where she was deeply grounded in the science of Learning and Organizational Development and honed her point of view as a HR - Talent, Learning & Development practitioner. Over the past decade, Wendy has grown her craft as a Consultant and Regional / Global HR Leader, turning lofty ideas into business-aligned, practical talent and learning strategy and scalable, sustainable solutions across sectors, industries and geographies. Outside her day-job and commitment as a daughter, wife, mum and friend, Wendy is hugely passionate about sharing HR and People Development practices and strengthening talent bench-strength, in the for-purpose sector. Presently, she has come full-cycle to extend (HR, Learning and Leadership Development) skills-based volunteer efforts to furthering the Silver Generation aging and living well agenda. What Does Neurodivergence Look Like at Work?

How can someone be really good at their job and still struggle with things everyone assumes should be easy? In this episode, we speak with Dr Ong Mian Li about something many capable people will recognise: Knowing what you need to do doesn’t always mean being able to do it consistently. We talk about ADHD, the hidden cost of keeping up, why getting started can be harder than getting finished, and what it means to work with the way you’re wired rather than constantly against it.  Key Takeaways from the episode  • ADHD is a regulation challenge, not an attention deficit. • The hidden cost of success: masking, burnout, and inconsistency. • Start tiny: task initiation, state management, and micro-wins About the Guest Dr. Ong Mian Li is a clinical psychologist and the founder of Lightfull Psychology and Consulting in Singapore. He works with children, teenagers, and adults on ADHD, OCD and tic disorders, anxiety, and the presentations that never fit neatly into one box. He trained and practised in the United States for more than ten years before returning to Singapore.  Dr Ong obtained his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. Most of his week looks quieter than that suggests: sitting with someone who has spent years being told they are careless or lazy, and helping them see the actual shape of how their attention works. He is especially interested in what comes after the diagnosis, when a person still has to make the 9am meeting, open the email they have been avoiding since Thursday, and keep a life running in a place that measures people by their output. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and co-founded Helping Give Away Psychological Science, which puts mental health evidence where people actually go looking for it. He is registered with the Singapore Register of Psychologists.
