Mumia Abu-Jamal: Freedom is the Only Treatment w/ Dr. Johanna Fernandez - WW Round Table 3/18/2021

Hosted by the Prisoners Solidarity Committee of Workers World Party, with special guests PAM AFRICA and DR. JOHANNA FERNANDEZ Pennsylvania political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal has tested positive for COVID-19. Supporters learned of the diagnosis March 3, as they were gathered in front of the office of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner to call for Abu-Jamal’s release and that of all incarcerated people over 50, who are vulnerable to premature death from COVID-19 and other illnesses. Due to mismanagement of the virus crisis, prisoners in Pennsylvania are experiencing high rates of COVID. Exempt from mandatory testing and refusing to wear masks, guards and other prison staff are the source. Mumia Abu-Jamal is a journalist, former Black Panther, and after being shot by a white police officer and framed for murder in 1981, a world renowned political prisoner. His revolutionary writing has uncompromisingly criticized the institutions of white supremacy, imperialism, and capitalism. Next month, he will turn 67 years old. The last 40 years of incarceration has had a devastating effect on Mumia's health. He suffers from cirrhosis of the liver after contracting Hepatitis C in prison and has acute dermatitis all over his body. After contracting COVID 19, he now also has congestive heart disease. The only treatment for these ailments is, at long last, his UNCONDITIONAL RELEASE FROM PRISON. Join Betsey Piette and Ted Kelly of the Prisoners Solidarity Committee of Workers World Party in a panel discussion with Pam Africa of the MOVE Organization; Dr. Johanna Fernandez, author of The Young Lords; and Santiago Alvarez, fellow student of Mumia Abu-Jamal's at UC Santa Cruz. From Hammer & Hoe to #BAmazonUnion: a conversation with Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley - 3/16/2021

On March 16th, 2021 Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley, author of “Hammer and Hoe: Hammer and Hoe: Alabama Communists during the Great Depression" and Gary B. Nash Professor of American History at U.C.L.A. joined Asantewaa Nkrumahj Ture of Black Alliance for Peace and Ted Kelly of Workers World Party to discuss the history and significance of the #BAmazon Union struggle led by majority Black workers in Bessemer, Alabama who are taking on Amazon and fighting for a union. Alabama — particularly the Birmingham-Bessemer area — has a centuries-old tradition of Black-led organizing against enslavement, racist land seizures, Jim Crow racism, prison-convict labor, segregation laws and Ku Klux Klan violence. Within living memory of the Amazon workers and their families is their starkly dedicated struggle against white-supremacist assassinations and bombings of Black churches and homes during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. In 1990, Dr. Robin D.G. Kelley published the phenomenal book “Hammer and Hoe: The Alabama Communist Party 1928-1951,” documenting the 23-year history of the Alabama Communist Party, a chapter of the Communist Party USA. Formed and molded by Black sharecroppers and laborers such as Black revolutionary Hosea Hudson, the ACP went above and beyond fighting for the rights of laborers and workers, Black and white, to the rights to housing, food and equal pay. We are also joined by Saladin Muhammad of the Southern Workers Assembly, Devin Cole of WWP Central Gulf Coast and STRIVE, and Susan Abulhawa, Workers World Party member and author of "Mornings in Jenin" and "Against the Loveless World." Eyewitness Texas: WW Round Table 2/25/2021

On February 15, an unprecedented winter storm brought subfreezing temperatures to Texas. After a week, huge sections of the working class, including incarcerated workers, are still without power, heat, and water while elites like Ted Cruz flee to Cancun to wait out the crisis. People in Texas are not only struggling to recover from this freeze, but from previous hurricanes and floods caused by global warming that produces extreme precipitation at all temperatures. This crisis is compounded further by the COVID pandemic and the massive suffering of Texans and workers across the capitalist world. Many people in Texas have frozen to death, and deaths are likely undercounted as more bodies will be found after the thaw. After months of high unemployment, record evictions and 500,000 virus deaths, we have a deregulated energy sector making record profits. The cause of all of this misery and profit for the rich? An entirely deregulated capitalist system that is destroying the planet. Hear five of our Texas comrades share their experiences, discuss and analyze this crisis and talk about why socialism is necessary to fight this climate disaster. Biden's Stimulus: Relief or Ripoff? WW Round Table 3/11/2021

Who will benefit from the bipartisan stimulus bill that is winding its way through the US Congress? On Thursday, March 11, a roundtable discussion of young revolutionary workers from Workers World Party discussed what this stimulus means to poor and working young people and how we can fight back against this unprecedented attack by the super rich. Biden’s campaign promise for a $15 minimum wage has been taken out of the stimulus package with little resistance. Workers have seen how the extended unemployment benefits originally in this stimulus bill have fallen from $400 to $300. This bill cannot possibly help our class make ends meet. Two-thirds of workers report they have been living paycheck to paycheck since COVID-19 hit U.S. shores. Nearly half were in that predicament even prior to the pandemic. This is due to extremely low wages, combined with the exorbitant costs of housing and other necessities. On the other hand, the handful of billionaires have thrived during the COVID pandemic. U.S. billionaire wealth has increased by 1.3 trillion since the pandemic began in March 2020. Millions of people lost their jobs but the super rich increased their wealth by over 40%.
