Write Better Together is a treat! Emily and Jon…I mean, Jon Meyers…have a great concept—encouraging writers of all types and levels of experience to move past the excuses we make, our own fears, and the dreaded writer’s block, and to step into the freedom of just doing it, to just Write Anyway (which also happens to be the name of their new book—run, don’t walk, to go find it once you have finished this review! Or go now and then come back…I’ll wait…).
Emily and Jon Meyers are fun, quirky, open, and unrehearsed. They bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table, and they add even more experience and knowledge through interviews with their frequent guests—people from lots of different corners of the world of writing who cover topics both expected and unexpected, but always insightful and helpful to the writer, seasoned or wannabe.
And since writers absorb much of their source material from reading, observing people, and just paying attention to life and the world around them, Emily and Jon Meyers add in every episode random bits of trivia and games for “fabulous prizes”—which sometimes work and sometimes fall a little flat, but as I said, they are unrehearsed. Whether they are discussing birds or Jon Meyers’ “stupid walk” (his words), the listener/viewer will always gain a takeaway.
This writer had already benefited from the Write Better Together podcast. It has helped me push through times when my mind felt stalled, I have learned even more about networking and publishing, aspects I had not considered such as the role of mental health in writing, and the important fact that writing is meant to be less competitive than collaborative. We can encourage each other, support each other, cheer each other on, help each other over the tough spots, and more because when it comes right down to it…we Write Better Together!
