Step 1: Spend every moment of every day following the story as it unfolds in real time 2: Do endless background research about what is, at the time, marginal news, because you know this is big. 3: Track down victims, sources, experts; reach out and wait for answers you know aren’t coming. 4: Reach out again—extra concise this time. Carefully craft tone and length for maximal persuasion. Send. 5: Record hundreds of hours of interviews, footage, narration 6: Produce the whole thing and put it into a nice package for listeners 7: Agree, reluctantly, to put up a paywall after episode 2, but convince your team to keep the price unbelievably low despite unbelievably high production costs 8: Release your magnum opus to the public for the price of a Big Mac. 9: Check the reviews and find people calling you “sick” or “no better than the perpetrators” because you had the gall to charge a few bucks for your last several years’ work 10: Ignore those whose opinions don’t matter and be proud of what you created People, listen up: nobody owes you their free work, least of all top class creators and journalists like these. A few weeks after the subject of the piece died, we received years of rare and demanding work—because while we ignored the story, they made it their life’s work to put the story in front of us. Pay the effing paywall and quit complaining. We lucked out.
