Ep. 204 The power of community: "Hall of Fame High" documentary and "Lebo Beat" community newspaper

Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates all the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. We are talking a whole lot about community in this episode - about the power of it, about connecting with our neighbors, about the importance of supporting those around you. And it’s all coming your way through not one, but TWO featured stories, both from the world of media…  First up, from the film world: A few weeks ago, Tressa received an email from our friends at DICK’S Sporting Goods, inviting her to the premiere of Hall of Fame High, a documentary by Cookie Jar & A Dream Studios - their in-house content & production studio (whom we featured in Episode 193). The documentary explores how Aliquippa High School has produced more Pro Football Hall of Famers than any other high school on the planet. Through the stories of alumni Darrelle Revis, Ty Law, and Mike Ditka — plus born-and-bred Aliquippa native Tony Dorsett — the film traces a legacy forged by the rise and fall of the steel industry, the challenges that followed, a culture of relentless competition, and generations of bloodlines. Blending past and present—from the peak of the steel industry to Hall of Fame induction weekends—the film reveals how a community shaped by struggle continues to produce excellence, asking a central question: How did one town create so many of the greatest players in football history? It is a remarkable story. Tressa had the joy and the honor of being part of the evening's festivities, which included a Q&A led by ESPN’s Rich Eisen and she got to chat with the film’s director, Jesse Washington, and Ty Law, from the red carpet.  And then, from the world of print media: With the abundance of digital platforms and AI, you may find it surprising (and perhaps refreshing?) to hear that there’s a new newspaper making its rounds in the Mt. Lebanon neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Now, it does exist online as well - but whatever way you choose to read it, the headline here is that its focus is on community-based journalism. The vast majority of contributors to the newspaper are residents of Mt. Lebanon - they have a deep desire to be part of telling the stories of their neighborhood. The paper is called LEBO BEAT and Tressa had the pleasure of sitting down with its Owner & Publisher, Brion Palmer, to talk about the importance of this type of journalism, how it builds and strengthens communities, and about his own journey that got him to where he is today.  Hall of Fame High: https://www.facebook.com/people/Hall-of-Fame-High/61587164374849/ Cookie Jar & A Dream Studios: https://www.cookiejardream.com/ Lebo Beat: https://lebobeat.com/ Watch our Tressa Tries…video series on YouTube here. https://www.yinzaregood.com/ FOLLOW US on social media: Instagram: @yinzaregood Facebook: @YinzAreGood Have a story of generosity or kindness to share with us? Ep. 203 The Twilight Wish Foundation's Missy Counahan - Honoring & enriching the lives of seniors through intergenerational wish celebrations

Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors... the people who unite us by building community. We’re thrilled to let yinz know that several countries have recently joined our list of who’s listening in, bringing our total to…89 countries and territories on 6 continents. Wow! It's an absolute joy to have you all here. And, as our numbers continue to grow, what stands out most is that this community of ours actually has nothing to do with borders or nationalities, and has everything to do with the fact that generosity, kindness, compassion, and celebrating community all feel the same, no matter where we live or what language we speak. They are, quite simply, human. And they are what unites us. And you’re gonna hear all about these “uniters” in this episode, and also about giving back and saying thank you. All courtesy of The Twilight Wish Foundation. Their mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational wish celebrations. There are chapters all over the U.S., including one right here in Southwest Pennsylvania and Tressa had the delight of sitting down with Missy Counahan, the Director of the Pittsburgh area chapter. As you’ll learn, Missy is a helper to her core and has dedicated her life to helping our older friends, neighbors, and family members. This episode is filled with stories of compassion, love and kindness.  Twilight Wish (Allegheny County/Pittsburgh): https://twilightwish.org/chapter-locations/allegheny-county-pennsylvania/ Twilight Wish - main website: https://twilightwish.org/ UPMC’s Living-At-Home Program: https://www.upmc.com/services/seniors/living-at-home/contact Watch our Tressa Tries…video series on YouTube here. https://www.yinzaregood.com/ FOLLOW US on social media: Instagram: @yinzaregood Facebook: @YinzAreGood Have a story of generosity or kindness to share with us? Ep. 202 Connection, Care & Community: Robert Morris University's "Chef Dan" Chiaverini. And notes from our Kindness Crate!

Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?". “I’d love to offer up a conversation with Dan Chiaverini, known to Robert Morris University students simply as “Chef Dan.” Dan has become something of a campus legend: a Harley-riding, Italian-raised chef who spends as much time talking with students in the dining hall as he does in the kitchen. Under his leadership, RMU Dining has become one of the most student-centered dining programs in Pennsylvania — recognized by Niche for its quality and community focus. Chef Dan leads a local food sourcing efforts program, works with doctors to create personalized meal plans for students with dietary needs and even teaches pasta-making and campfire cooking classes. At his core, Chef Dan embodies what Yinz Are Good celebrates — people who make Pittsburgh better through connection, care and community. His story blends food, mentorship and hometown pride, and his impact reaches far beyond the dining hall.”  We received this email several weeks ago and it made our day. We talk a lot on this show about recognizing how we can each use our unique skillset to support others and build community, and Chef Dan is a prime example of that. He goes above and beyond for the students - these young adults who are away from home for the first time - and it means so much not only to them, but to their families too. Tressa sat down with Chef Dan in one of RMU’s Academic Media Center recording studios and chatted about his journey, his Italian family, and, of course, about all he’s doing at Robert Morris.  And also in this episode, Tressa shares notes from our Kindness Crate, in response to the question, “What are you grateful for today?”. Ep. 201 How YinzMart.com, Pittsburgh's online marketplace, is building community - featuring Healthy HeartBeets, Rosebloom Headwear, True Comfort Care and Wild Rosemary

Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are building community. Community, support, collaboration, and a whole lot of laughter... A couple of months ago, we received an IG message that read, in part: “Hello, My name is Jurgen. I created an online marketplace for verified Pittsburgh small businesses called YinzMart.com.” Jurgen went on to say that YinzMart is meant to help yinzer- owned businesses. Well, you can imagine our joy when we read “yinz” and “yinzer” in the same paragraph… Needless to say, Jurgen and Tressa set up a call to chat. As Tressa sees it,  the mission of YinzMart is to lift up local small businesses, help them in new and innovative ways, connect them with each other, and build community. And she was inspired to not only feature Jurgen & YinzMart on the show, but to welcome some of the small business owners who are part of YinzMart. What followed was a joyful meeting at the very cool and very modern Digital Foundry on Penn State’s New Kensington campus. (A huge thank you to the folks at the Digital Foundry - specifically, Alyssa Pistininzi - for their hospitality.) In short, the group of folks we assembled are incredible humans who care deeply about their communities and their fellow small business owners: Jurgen Koster, Kelly Cravotta, Julian Figarette, HongChing, Cassandra Ross, and Emily “the bun” Benka. You’ll hear about their journeys as small business owners, about how they support each other and how others support them, and how YinzMart is supporting them all.  Jurgen Koster: YinzMart.com Kelly Cravotta: True Comfort Care & Kelly Cravotta Julian Figarette & HongChing: Healthy HeartBeets Wild Rosemary:  Cassandra Ross (@wildrosemary_herbal) • Instagram photos and videos Emily “the bun” Benka: Rosebloom Headwear  ---- https://www.yinzaregood.com/ Watch our Tressa Tries…video series on YouTube here. EPISODE 200 🎉 Flipping the script: Host Tressa Glover is our featured guest in celebration of this milestone episode

Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. Welcome to Episode 200, yinzers! Woohoo! 🎉 In celebration of this milestone, we have flipped the script - or rather, flipped the mic - and put Tressa in the interviewee seat. We even have a very special (and very familiar) guest host... The idea for this episode was formed when Executive Director of Computer Reach, David Sevick, reached out to Tressa, asking if he could interview her for their weekly "good news" newsletter. In particular, he wanted to highlight Tressa during Women's History Month -which coincided with our Episode #200. In this episode, you'll hear Dave's interview with Tressa and then an extended interview with Tressa done by our guest host. Ep. 199 De'netta Benjamin-Miller & Sojourner House: Compassionate Recovery Services for Mothers and Their Families

Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates all the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who unite us and who remind us that we are all a lot more alike than we are different.  One of our goals has always been to provide a space to hear each other’s stories - and, more specifically, the parts of our stories that we don’t usually get around to sharing. The “why” behind who we are and what we do. The struggles, the light bulb moments, the heartache, the accomplishments, the joy…Because this is what connects us - this is how we see ourselves in one another. And when we see ourselves in others, the world begins to change.  Today’s conversation encompasses all of this. De’Netta Benjamin-Miller  is a licensed clinical social worker, she provides free mental health services to the community through her own company, Focus on Life Counseling Center, and she is Executive Director of Sojourner House and Sojourner House MOMS. In a nutshell, Sojourner House provides compassionate recovery services for mothers and their families. And the “and their families” is what truly sets them apart, as you’ll hear.  As you may imagine, this conversation discusses trauma, and De'netta candidly shares her own traumatic experience and how it led her to the powerful work she's doing today. Ep. 198 Sister Sue: Community leader, helper, and member of the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh Sister

Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. We sure are glad you’ve joined us today, that you’ve carved out some time to hear about what’s going right in our communities, about the love and compassion existing within them. And today’s guest is the embodiment of these ideals. She has (literally) dedicated her life to helping others, to showing love to others, to providing hope to others…and she has been doing so for decades.  Her name is Sue Fazzini or Sister Sue. She is a Benedictine Sister - a member of the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh. And, yinzers, she is a glowing example of what just being kind and showing compassion can do. What it can do for individuals and what it can do for communities. You’re going to hear about her journey from growing up just outside of Pittsburgh to what she is doing now, the breadth of which is remarkable and inspiring. You’re about to hear a beautiful conversation about love, respect, generosity, and giving back. Oh, and you’re gonna hear a lot of laughter too.
