    8. Creating a Hiring Avatar for Your Next Employee | A Change Is Gonna Come

So you’re ready to make the next hire in your business… but you don’t know where to start. We’ve got you covered! In this episode, we’re walking through how to build an avatar for your ideal hire for this next role so you can be confident that you’re looking for the right fit. Make sure you download our free Hiring Avatar template to follow along with us! Resources mentioned: Download our free Hiring Avatar template Some key takeaways from this episode include: It’s important to avoid creating avatar characteristics related to protected classes such as race, gender, ethnicity, etc. This ensures you’re being inclusive and above board with your hiring. While we all desire a unicorn candidate that fits every single skill set and characteristic we want, you need to make your ideal client avatar a balance of dream attributes and realistic attributes.  Some of the items you’ll want to consider as you put together your ideal hiring avatar include education, experience, interpersonal skills, temperament and work style. 5. Quiet Quitting | Take This Job and Shove It

The term “quiet quitting” has taken the workplace by storm in the years since Covid. It’s when employees disengage from their jobs, often doing the bare minimum, because they don’t feel a sense of purpose in their role or the workplace. In this episode, we’re sharing how to prevent - or bounce back from - a quiet quitting phenomenon in your own office.  Some key takeaways from this episode include: Your team culture is a huge factor in reducing quiet quitting in the workplace. Look at how you’re engaging with employees, how strong communication is between teams, and how you’re showing gratitude to your team. During Covid, a lot of people realized they want more work-life balance. Even though your business covers the “work” side, how are you creating opportunities for employees to have flexibility in their jobs that allows them to have a life outside of work. You might say you have an open-door policy, but as a leader, you need to create opportunities to chat with employees one-on-one. Oftentimes, we don’t find out the employee is unhappy until we’re conducting an exit interview. 4. Generalist vs. SME | I Walk the Line

Many businesses think their HR teams are a one-stop shop for every possible scenario related to recruiting, hiring, and onboarding in the organization. While we have knowledge about all these things, there may be some situations where another specialist is needed to ensure everything is done correctly and legally. In this episode, we share how we’ve been asked to “walk the line” as HR professionals, and when you should bring in another specialist instead. Some key takeaways from this episode include: Many human resources professionals work as generalists, not specialists. Of course we may be super comfortable with one particular aspect of HR from experience, but some tasks like writing OSHA policies or advising on employment contracts fall outside our responsibilities. Bringing in a specialist or trained professional for specific aspects of your employment materials or documentation is so important. A reputable HR firm can work with you to figure out who that specialist should be and connect you with contacts who would fit the role. Even the hiring process for technical roles can warrant bringing in a specialist. We are extremely well-versed in hiring, but for certain roles like “Scrum Master” or “Agile Coach,” we might not understand the skills we’re looking for in a candidate like someone in the field would. 2. Can I Fire This Employee? | Bye Bye Bye

In this episode of Your Human Resource, we’re talking about one of the trickiest parts of managing a team: firing an employee. We cover what it actually means to have “at will” employment, different termination scenarios you might encounter, and what you need to know about protected classes when it comes to termination. Resources mentioned: SHRM Webcast Series Some key takeaways from this episode include: Employee “at will” means an employee or employer can terminate employment at any time as long as no laws are violated. Even if you live in an “at will” state, there can be a cost associated with firing an employee if you don’t follow the right protocols. If you fire an employee, it doesn’t automatically mean that person will qualify for an unemployment claim. If you warned the employee that they needed to improve their work performance, gave them ample time to do so, and documented those conversations, they may not be eligible for unemployment. You cannot terminate based on speculation without proof. For example, if you suspect an employee is coming to work under the influence of alcohol, you cannot immediately fire them. You or your HR team should have a conversation with the individual first to see what’s really going on. 1. The I-9 Form | A Few of My Favorite Things

Processing an I-9 form is one of our favorite things to do… okay not really, but it is an important part of onboarding a new hire! In the inaugural episode of Your Human Resource, we dig into the specifics of the I-9 form, including why you need new hires to complete it, when it needs to be processed, and how to make sure it’s processed correctly.  Please note: this episode was recorded in the summer of 2023, so the dates of new changes to the I-9 we discuss in this episode were all in 2023. Resources: The Form I-9 Some key takeaways from this episode include: The I-9 is a tool to verify the identity and eligibility to work of US employees. All businesses in the United States must complete a form I-9 to hire and onboard an employee. Employers that are in good standing with USCIS, and those that use E-Verify, may continue to virtually inspect the I-9 supporting documents beyond August 1st, 2023. Employers must maintain a person's Form I-9 for as long as the individual works for the employer and for the required retention period after the termination of an individual's employment.
