Your Listener

John Cuturilo

John Cuturilo, the counsellor of Your Listener Counselling in Melbourne, Australia, is the host of the Your Listener podcast. Discussing psychological topics including mental health, critical thinking, and social matters, he presents unique insights. Rather than lecturing coercively on what to believe, filling his discussions with provocative language or quotes from famous people, or political rhetoric, John explains how our minds work and the impact of this on how we operate individually and socially. He often helps his audience to realise that what we assume are truths are often ideas resulting from errors in thinking — to which all of us may fall subject. Through this, John encourages critical thinking, accepting responsibility for our flaws, the separation of criticising ideas from judging people, exercising our minds, and finding ways to live in harmony with and learn from each other rather than avoiding those who think differently. He also believes in helping his audience to develop more detailed, complex knowledge, rather than overly simplifying concepts to the extent that they become empty slogans. He maintains that while the quest for truth may never be completed, we should still strive to learn of it as only by doing this will we be the most independent and astute possible thinkers. If you have an idea for an episode, or would like to appear as a guest or collaborate, contact John to introduce yourself! John welcomes people of a broad range of backgrounds for discussion. John especially values the opportunity to discuss perspectives which differ from his. The importance of Estuary, community, and learning from our differences with Valerie Flynn

Donate at the following link: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=3LY8DB82U3EMS I thank Finding Solutions Counselling for their partnership. Find them here: www.findingsolutionscounselling.com.au In this episode, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Valerie Flynn. Valerie is an author, podcaster, and learner. She is a contributing author to the “Writers Of Meaning” book, and the host of the Nara Fellowship and Writers Of Meaning podcasts. Professionally, Valerie worked in film, video, and radio as a production manager and producer for over 30 years with her father and brother. Some of the media projects to which she contributed were with Hanna-Barbera, Putnam Berkley, and Turner Entertainment. LionHawk Entertainment is her production company, for which she records digital legacy keepsakes for her clients and their loved ones. In this discussion, we explore Valerie's experiences with the concept of community, including a fascinating type of community called Estuary which exists internationally and facilitates learning through the presenting of different perspectives and healthy disagreement. As is always valuable, we emphasise having the humility to understand that our beliefs are not perfect ― and that listening to others' perspectives is essential to understanding how our own beliefs operate. Find them here: www.gibellipositivepathways.com.au In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Leah Ellis and her daughter Melody, the founders of The Society of Child Entrepreneurs (S.O.C.E.) in Kansas, United States. S.O.C.E. operates programs to teach children the value of ethical business through a highly practical and realistic approach, while helping them learn the skills that transfer to other domains of life. The assumption that children are incapable needs to be challenged, and the experiences that we discuss here speak volumes.
