Samuel Taylor Coleridge ~ Kubla Khan

Kubla Khan Or, a vision in a dream. A Fragment. By Samuel Taylor Coleridge  In Xanadu did Kubla KhanA stately pleasure-dome decree:Where Alph, the sacred river, ranThrough caverns measureless to manDown to a sunless sea. So twice five miles of fertile groundWith walls and towers were girdled round; And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree; And here were forests ancient as the hills,Enfolding sunny spots of greenery. But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slantedDown the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!A savage place! as holy and enchantedAs e’er beneath a waning moon was hauntedBy woman wailing for her demon-lover!And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,A mighty fountain momently was forced:Amid whose swift half-intermitted burstHuge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher’s flail:And mid these dancing rocks at once and everIt flung up momently the sacred river. Five miles meandering with a mazy motionThrough wood and dale the sacred river ran,Then reached the caverns measureless to man,And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean; And ’mid this tumult Kubla heard from farAncestral voices prophesying war!   The shadow of the dome of pleasure   Floated midway on the waves;   Where was heard the mingled measure   From the fountain and the caves. It was a miracle of rare device,A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!    A damsel with a dulcimer   In a vision once I saw:   It was an Abyssinian maid   And on her dulcimer she played,   Singing of Mount Abora.   Could I revive within me   Her symphony and song,   To such a deep delight ’twould win me,That with music loud and long,I would build that dome in air,That sunny dome! Those caves of ice! And all who heard should see them there,And all should cry, Beware! Beware! His flashing eyes, his floating hair!Weave a circle round him thrice,And close your eyes with holy dreadFor he on honey-dew hath fed,And drunk the milk of Paradise. May Day with Ashwani Kumar

Zabaan-e-aam is back with a new episode. Our first in 2026. :) This year's May Day episode is by our young comrade Ashwani, who has shared his observations in the form of poetry. The poem looks at how the city invisibilizes labour. As we go about our busy lives, the workers and labourers who complete the circle of the economy get replaced and some of us hardly notice the difference. It is important to remember those who help us through our day and when they are away, their absence makes a difference. The recent Noida protests by the factory workers are a reminder that the basic need of an 8-hour workday and dignity of labour are still missing. The workers toil tirelessly in the factories and are humiliated by the managers even when they take a washroom break. If they are late, they are sent back. An increase from 11,000 to 13,000 hardly makes a difference in an economy where the cost of essentials has gone up so much. It is important for more voices to speak out for these workers and the workers across the country so that they get decent wages and are treated fairly, as humans. Ashwani is your comrade, who's exhausted striving through the same world as yours. they hold on to kindness as their tool for revolution, and work to inform narratives with evidence. If they are not processing their rage through poems or revelling in sadness, they can be found in the kitchen cooking. More of my thoughts can be found on @ashwanirdeshak on instagram. The Urdu poem I have shared is by Asrarul Haq Majaz ~ 'Mazduron ka Geet'.
