    Zilch #187-"7a" talks Boyce & Hart’s “I Wonder What She’s Doing Tonite?”

Zilch#187 with Glenn Gretlund from "7a"talks the deluxe 55th Anniversary release of Boyce & Hart’s critically acclaimed 1968 album “I Wonder What She’s Doing Tonite?” Limited 180gm red colored vinyl LP pressing. Digitally remastered edition. Released in March 1968, I Wonder What She's Doing Tonite? was the most successful merging of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart's distinct artistic styles. Whether it be Tommy's sweet pop concoctions or Bobby Hart's bluesy soul leanings, the two fully blend on this, their second long player. The album arrived on the heels of the duo's explosive success, writing and producing for the Monkees. I Wonder What She's Doing Tonite? made the charts in April 1968. A&M had a strong and fostering relationship with their artists at that time and Boyce & Hart would return with another album (It's All Happening On The Inside) and three more singles. Nevertheless, their second album was a peak commercially and artistically and still holds up decades later, as one of the finer pieces of pop craftsmanship from one of the most prolific eras of rock music. This deluxe 55th Anniversary edition has been remastered and includes extensive liner notes by Monkees manager and historian Andrew Sandoval. A Defense of Present

May I present a defense of Present side one. See what I did there? The biggest clue to me that something was amiss about this album was in the title: The Monkees Present: Micky, David, Micheal. Notice it’s not Micky, Davy and Mike. I took it to mean that The Monkees were presenting an album of music by David, Michael and Micky, NOT the Monkees as a group. It is for all intents and purposes a solo album. Though reduced to a single LP, it sure sounds like they guys themselves were thinking of this as their White Album where everybody got a side. They could be as individualistic as they wanted because this was a showcase album to express their own unique styles as musicians, not as Monkees. While there are some terrific songs here, it is largely a hodgepodge of original and leftovers. Much like Instant Replay many of the good songs were left off. If they’d swapped out Ladies Aid Society for If You Have the Time or Penny Music for Looking For the GoodTimes, or Rose Marie and Steam Engine for Little Girl and If I Knew. it would have been a much more cohesive album. My favorite tracks on side one are Good Clean Fun, it’s country rock at it’s finest and Nez sounds like he’s really enjoying himself. How this didn’t end up on a FNB album is beyond me. At this point Micheal saving his best songs for that band and throwing his scraps at the Monkees. I like If I knew simple becaus of David’s vocal and the arrangement, don’t get me started on the lyrics. I also like Bye, Bye, Baby, Bye Bye again for the vocal and production. Micky when he put his mind to it could turn out some terrific songs. Well, that’s all I have to say about side one. See you for the discussion of side two.
