UPDATE: The Idaho Four Killer Wants To Withdraw His Guilty Plea

In November 2022, four college students: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, were brutally stabbed to death in their off-campus share house in Moscow, Idaho. Seven weeks later, criminology student Bryan Kohberger was arrested and eventually accepted a plea deal, receiving four life sentences without the possibility of parole to avoid the death penalty. Now, Kohberger is back in the headlines after filing for post-conviction relief. In this update episode of True Crime Conversations, Gemma Bath is rejoined by journalist and author Vicky Ward following the release of the updated edition of The Idaho Four: An American Tragedy.  LINKS Find out more about Vicky Ward’s book The Idaho Four: An American Tragedy here. The 5 systems that changed my productivity & my life forever

Today I thought we could go through the five systems that have had the biggest impact on both my productivity and my happiness. And I want to say both of those things deliberately, because I think we talk about productivity like it's separate from how we feel. In my experience, it really isn't. When the systems are right, you feel better. And the whole reason I like productivity is that it leaves more space for not working, and the fun bits!! Watch the full Change episode on the Solved podcast: https://mrk.mn/change You've probably taken the Myers-Briggs test, put your type in a LinkedIn bio, or had a boss organize your team around it. In this clip, Drew and I get into why that four-letter label is closer to a horoscope than a science. I tell the real story of where MBTI came from: not a lab, but a mother-daughter pair working from a dining room table during World War II, building on Jung's ideas even though Jung himself warned against boxing people into types. We get into the numbers that should give you pause, like the fact that a third to half of people get a different result when they retake the test weeks later, and why it predicts almost none of the things the Big Five actually predicts. Then we get to the part that matters: why slapping a label on yourself isn't harmless fun. Labels become self-fulfilling, they turn into a responsibility shield, and an inaccurate one can have you fighting your own nature for years. Liane Moriarty is one of the most successful authors in the world — the writer behind Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers, Apples Never Fall and The Husband's Secret. Now, for the first time in her career, she's written a sequel: Big Little Truths, returning to Madeline, Celeste and the rest of the Big Little Lies world a decade on. In this conversation, Liane and Kate talk about why she avoided writing a sequel for so long, the pressure of returning to characters millions of readers already love, and the surreal experience of watching Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep bring her imagination to life on screen — including the story of how she wrote a role specifically for Meryl Streep before ever meeting her. They also get into Liane's family of writers (three of five sisters are published authors), her own breast cancer scare, marriage, motherhood, writing teenagers, envy as a creative motivator, and why — even after decades of success — she still braces for criticism before a single review is written. While the conversation avoids any major spoilers, Liane and Kate do discuss Big Little Truths. Some listeners may wish to read the book in advance of listening to this episode.  Big Little Truths by Liane Moriarty is out 25th August.  Want to listen before everyone else? 6. Novelist Colson Whitehead’s New York State of Mind

Novelist Colson Whitehead’s New York State of Mind

Novelist Colson Whitehead is one of only a handful of writers to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction twice—first for The Underground Railroad in 2017, and again for The Nickel Boys in 2020. He joins us on the heels of his latest novel, Cool Machine, the final installment of his acclaimed Harlem trilogy. We begin with his decision to close out the world of furniture dealer Ray Carney (3:00), why Whitehead felt compelled to keep returning to 125th and Morningside (7:30), and the artistic influences that shaped him as a teenager (14:15). Then, we walk through the personal scenes chronicled in Sag Harbor (15:15), the horror movies that eventually led to Zone One (17:38), and how his latest protagonist’s story unfolds alongside a New York City perpetually destroying and reinventing itself (21:48). On the back-half, Whitehead reflects on finding his voice as a young writer (31:30), why he “had no choice” but to write his debut novel, The Intuitionist (38:20), and teaching at Princeton alongside the late Toni Morrison (41:05). To close, we discuss the uncertain future of reading (44:55), the specter of AI (48:35), Zohran Mamdani’s first eight months as mayor (51:50), his love letter and elegy to the city after September 11 (55:00), and why, after more than a dozen books, writing still makes him feel a little more whole (1:03:00). The ‘Past Lives’ of Actor Greta Lee

What if it’s true that good things come to those who wait? For Greta Lee, the success of Past Lives came after twenty years of working and finding her way as an actor. Her latest, leading turns come in The Last House and Late Fame. We begin with Late Fame (4:12) and her larger-than-life character, inspired in part by artists like Isabella Rossellini, Marlene Dietrich, and Liza Minnelli (6:37). Then, Lee reflects on her upbringing as the daughter of Korean immigrants (12:20), translating for her parents at an early age (13:10), the sacrifices made by her doctor father and artist mother (16:05), and the high school experience that first made her question where she belonged (22:37). On the back-half, we walk through Lee’s lean years in New York (29:35), the restaurant job that kept her afloat (32:00), and the rejection and financial stress of trying to make a living as an actor (34:55). Then, we talk about how motherhood changed her relationship to identity and representation (41:12), before returning to the miracle of Past Lives (52:10)—from her first days on set to the film’s emotional Sundance premiere (57:20), her mother’s profound connection to the story (1:03:45), and what Greta has learned about finally owning her own story (1:08:20). The Last House is now available to stream on Netflix. Late Fame is in theaters, expanding nationally on August 14th. Subscribe to our YouTube channel. As always, our email: talkeasypod@gmail.com. The Mystery Guest Episode

Today for the first time in Friends Keep Secrets history, we've left the house and hit the streets, with the goal of convincing one random stranger to enter our home and be interviewed. Honestly we were not prepared for how many people said no. We just weren't completely psychologically prepared to deal with that level of rejection, especially in our own neighborhood during a heatwave. But in our darkest hour, something truly magical happened. The universe aligned. They say you should never get in a stranger's car, but today we did exactly that, and then we let that stranger inside our house. The afternoon that followed ended up exceeding our wildest expectations, as we were introduced to not one but two unbelievable new talents. So lock in and prepare for an unforgettable multimedia experience, and if you see us wandering around your neighborhood someday, consider stopping and letting us into your vehicle.
