Why Trying to “Sound Smart” is Losing You the Room with Strategic Story Producer Rob Willis

Have you ever sat through a presentation and felt your attention just start to…drift? Chances are, it wasn't the content. It was the delivery. A year ago, Rob Willis was a corporate trainer with years of experience and a sharp eye for what makes people listen. He wondered if what he taught in workshops would resonate with a larger audience. So he started making short videos that break down what makes great speakers great: from their word choice, to structure, to the energy they brought to any room or conversation.  Rob even made a video breaking down my method of public speaking. In his video,  Rob dissects my signature opening line, and my friends couldn't stop sending it to me. One hundred videos in one hundred days later, Rob's videos are going viral on a regular basis, and a whole new audience is eager to learn from him. But what I find most interesting about Rob is where he actually learned all of this. Not in a classroom. He learned it by giving free walking tours in Berlin, where nobody pays up front and anyone can leave at any moment. If you're boring, people simply walk away — no tip, no small talk, just people voting with their feet. Rob and I discuss what that taught him about holding a room, why the smartest person in the room is rarely the most persuasive one, and the handful of simple, almost mechanical shifts that separate a forgettable pitch from one people actually remember. In this episode you'll learn: ➡️ Why "if I just explain it better" is the most common, and most inaccurate, assumption speakers make ➡️ Rob's trick for holding anyone's attention, whether it's a boardroom or a crowd on a street corner ➡️ What real charisma is made of (hint: it's not confidence, it's belief) ➡️ Why so many people suddenly sound fake the moment they step on stage ➡️ 5 things you can do in your next meeting to immediately present better  You don't need a TED Talk on your calendar to get something out of this one. Any of us who wants to be understood — in a meeting, a pitch, a hard conversation — will find something worth stealing. This… is A Bit of Optimism. + + + This episode is brought to you by SAP. Navy Anesthesiologist Dr. Zachary Meade: From Childhood Trauma to Becoming a Doctor

Dr. Zachary Meade watched his grandfather shoot his father to save his mother's life. He was a child. He thought it was normal. "Apparently it's not normal." Dr. Meade is a Navy anesthesiologist based in San Diego who took one of the least conventional roads into medicine you will ever hear. Before medical school he was an Army bomb squad technician, a firefighter, an EMT, and an electrical engineer, and he served in the Army, the Air Force, and the Navy. Before any of that he was a kid in Indiana and Florida moving between homes and foster care, failing freshman English, with nobody in his family who had ever done any of this. Today he reaches over 400,000 people online debunking medical misinformation. In this conversation with Dr. David Spiro, he talks about the grandparents who rebuilt his foundation, what the bomb squad taught him about attention to detail ("an 84 essentially meant you died"), the faith that gave him purpose, and the hardest question of the episode: has he forgiven his parents? He shares the phone call that ended contact with his father, the rule that helped his mother get sober, and the "cultural divide" that opens up when you become the first physician in your family. He closes with what he would say to 10-year-old Zach, and Dr. Spiro responds with a story from his own pediatric ER that he says will change how he practices. 241. Why Some Relationships Don't Survive Loss

Drop me a message or voice note! Have you ever looked at a relationship that used to feel like home and suddenly felt like you were speaking a different language? That disorienting shift is something I hear about constantly from my clients, and it's something I lived through myself in the years after losing my parents. In this episode, I'm talking about outgrowing relationships after loss. That strange, often guilt-inducing experience of growing and evolving so much through grief that some relationships simply can't hold who you've become anymore. This isn't about blame, and it's not about anyone doing anything wrong. It's about misalignment, and giving yourself permission to lovingly release what no longer fits. Here's what we cover: ✨ Why some people show up for us after loss, and why even the ones who DO keep showing up can start to feel farther away than ever ✨ How grief can compress years of personal growth into just months, and why that pace mismatch creates real distance in our relationships ✨ What it means to "stay the same but become a different person" after significant loss ✨ Why some relationships flex and grow with you, while others were only ever built for who you used to be ✨ How to release relationships with love instead of resentment, and why you're allowed to grieve even the ones you're choosing to let go of If this one resonates and you want to go deeper, I've got two related episodes for you, too: 🎧 Episode 26 — 10 Ways to Set Boundaries in Your Grief: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/026-10-ways-to-set-boundaries-in-your-grief/id1688812587?i=1000631914708 🎧 Episode 192 — Navigating Relationship Changes & Outgrowing Friendships: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/192-navigating-relationship-changes-outgrowing-friendships/id1688812587?i=1000748896282 Wherever you are in this right now, I want you to know you're in a beautiful season of becoming, and becoming sometimes means outgrowing... even the people you love. When the Carlaw’s won the meat tray at the footy it was treated with the reverence of a third child. And it’s got Sarah thinking. Say you win big. A stonking powerball or a lotto. Who would you tell? How much would you give away? And if you kept it quiet… what would the signs be? 9. Loving Yourself: Stories of Identity and Healing

Loving Yourself: Stories of Identity and Healing

-J’Quay reflects on “heartache” rather than just heartbreak, describing how investing deeply in something that doesn’t work out leads to emotional crashes, but also to the realization that time helps us cope and reframe those experiences. J’Quay shares that they do let people get close and give everyone “equal parts” of themselves, but believe that heartbreak is survivable because there are billions of people in the world and one person’s rejection isn’t definitive. They talks about a childhood dream of being “palatable but different” to achieve goals, and how they consciously let go of that dream in favor of individuality, which has helped them make friends, get jobs, breathe easier, and feel stronger. -Seve describes struggling with negative self-talk and not often focusing on beautiful things others say, but he cherishes a compliment from a not-very-close friend who called them caring and kind-hearted, which made them feel deeply seen and warmed. He shares that one of the most painful things he tells himself is that he’s undeserving of happiness, rooted in feeling left out when seeing others experience love and joy, especially in high school and college. When feeling undeserving, he looks in the mirror and thinks of his parents’ love and dreams for their children, seeing himself as the child their parents wanted and as a product of their parents’ love, which helps them affirm “I’m enough.” -Nyle reflects on growing up in a very white neighborhood as a brown Pakistani person, praying to God and asking why he was made different, and feeling displaced and ashamed of their racial identity despite not facing overt racism. He tried changing key aspects of himself to conform—listening to the same music, changing his tastes—to avoid being an outcast. He convinced himself that a white girl wouldn’t like him because of the color of his skin, and begged his mother for skin-whitening cream. Later he learned to accept himself and take pride in his complexion. Topics: High school love, early insecurity, and shame  Struggles with racial identity in a white neighborhood The danger of chasing physical perfection Finding self-love and worth by caring for others  How time helps process heartache and heartbreak Overcoming the fear of standing out and embracing yourself Letting go of the dream of being palatable Overcoming negative self-talk by stepping back  Finding self-worth in the love of parents and joy with family Choosing self-worth over validation from others FOLLOW THE SHOW ►Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/storiesfromastrangerpod  ►Threads: https://www.threads.com/@storiesfromastrangerpod  ►Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/storiesfromastrangerpodcast  FOLLOW HUNTER PROSPER ►Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hunter_prosper/  ►TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hunterprosper  See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

    Finding Your Life Path, Solved

You've been told your whole life to explore, keep your options open, try new things. And you've done exactly that. Moved cities, pivoted careers, taken every personality quiz. But here's what nobody warns you about: all that freedom might be the thing keeping you stuck. This episode digs into a depressed 19th century Danish philosopher who diagnosed our entire modern crisis 180 years before we lived it. We tell the story of Casanova, history's most famous f*****y, who had more adventures than anyone alive and died completely alone with nothing but 2,000 pages of memories nobody believed. We break down Dan Gilbert's research on why your brain is actually better at justifying your choices than you give it credit for. We walk through Kierkegaard's three stages of commitment, from the aesthetic life of endless options to the point where commitment stops feeling like a choice at all. And we talk about the grief that nobody tells you about when you finally pick one life and let all the others go. Behind Baseball's Biggest Star with Bryce and Kayla Harper

Bryce and Kayla Harper are joining me for their very first interview together, and they're giving us a rare look inside the marriage and family behind one of baseball's biggest stars. We get into how they met as teenagers, the rocky start to their love story, and what it's really taken to build a marriage that's lasted through 16 years, four kids, and one incredible baseball career. Bryce opens up about the pressure of playing in the MLB, dealing with criticism, dad guilt, and why he genuinely couldn't care less what strangers say about him. Kayla gets emotional talking about protecting her family, raising four young kids while Bryce is on the road, and the hardest part of being married to one of baseball's biggest stars.
