Episode 29: The Yoga of Urban Gardening with Yasuke Daddy, YOGA TEACHER 200 RYT – URBAN FARMER URBAN AGRICULTURIST – URBAN FORESTER

This Friday, April 22, is Earth Day—so we thought we’d spotlight how the getting-people-back-to-the-earth trends of farming and gardening are a key focus of not one, but several, of our top wellness trends for 2022. The pandemic has made self-sufficiency and survivalism much bigger values. And the quickening environmental and soil crisis is sparking a new awareness that we must restore the world’s soil (through more regenerative farming practices), while the medical evidence mounts that exposure to soil brings so many eye-opening health benefits. Sherry interviews, Yasuke Daddy, a yoga teacher, urban farmer, agriculturist and urban forester (Vintage Greenhouse & Vintage Yasuke LC) located in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia metro area. Besides his yoga certification, Yasuke has been serving the most needed communities that he once grew up in.  His clientele is from impoverished and underrepresented communities that have a lack of resources for mental health and physical longevity.  His company has teamed up with an urban farm in a Maryland suburb of Washington, DC to change the nutrition disparity that plagues our communities today.  Since partnering, Yasuke has created community educational gardens, eco system recovery and urban farming.  He has also obtained two acres of farming land in South Hill, Va (near Sherry's ancestral matriarchal lineage) for mass production that will cycle directly to communities in need. Sherry and Yasuke discuss how to create container gardens and bridging the gap between yoga and farming for overall longevity..

Episode 21: The Breath of Color with Leslie Nesbitt of Rhythmic Walls Decorative Painting

In this episode, Sherry interviews her colleague Leslie Nesbitt of Rhythmic Walls about the powerful use of color in the home and how it affects us all.  Color is a powerful tool that should be respected within our environments. As a former executive of a nationally recognized women’s organization, Leslie discovered her latent artistic talent while engaging in home decorating projects as a respite from the hectic demands of her fulltime career. As she set about transforming her family’s home into an individual bastion of color, texture and style, she became instantly hooked and fascinated with decorative finishing and how it can dramatically transform interior spaces. Her passion led her to start taking decorative painting classes and to become professionally trained and certified in the application of exquisite surface design. However, it was the response from others that pushed her to stretch beyond the canvas of her home to expand outward, and soon she began painting for family and friends. Unable to focus on anything else and uninspired by her day job, with the help and encouragement of her husband, Leslie set up shop in the sunroom of her home, launching Rhythmic Walls (RW) Decorative Painting and Design Studio in 2003.  In the years since the launch of RW, Leslie has created a thriving business and established a loyal and solid clientele. She has worked on scores of commercial and residential projects. Her work has been featured on HGTV and in local and national publications. Leslie’s achievements as a successful businesswoman have gained her national acclaim and in 2005, she received the coveted National Women’s Business Center’s Capital Award, from Wachovia Bank. The receipt of the award positioned her to expand her company’s capabilities. In 2009, her artistic accomplishments were acknowledged by fellow artisans and she was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the International Decorative Painting Artisans League (IDAL), the professional trade association for decorative painter, surface artists and designers. Leslie is the first African American to have held this position. As the owner and creative director, Leslie’s focus is on creating cutting edge designs, techniques and products, while overseeing and managing sales and quality control.vLeslie’s rhythm and flow for putting together the unexpected is poetic.
