    1136: Finding Your Sound - Marlonius on Craft, Groove, and Identity

    In this episode, we're joined by bassist, composer, and bandleader Marlonius aka, Marlon Martinez, the creative force behind the Marlonius Jazz Orchestra. We talk about growing up in a deeply musical family, moving through a serious classical conservatory track at Colburn, and the long arc of building a personal sound. We dig into Marlon's early encounters with Stanley Clarke, what it means to live in the "in-between" of jazz and classical worlds, and how rhythm (including Marlon's time on drum set) shapes everything from groove to orchestration.     John Mietus and the World-First "Butterfly Lovers" on Double Bass

    John Mietus is a composer, double bassist, and conductor, currently Associate Principal Bass with the Auckland Philharmonia. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Ohio, John started playing bass at age four and went on to study with some legendary teachers while building a career that spans orchestral playing, chamber music, teaching, and composition. In this episode, John and Jason dig into John's world-premiere performance of the "Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto" (He Zhanhao and Chen Gang) on double bass with orchestra in Changsha, China, on January 1, 2026, and what it took to make a faithful transcription of such an iconic work. John shares how he approached the arranging process, why he ultimately chose fifths tuning, the practical realities of living in that tuning for months, and the string setup that helped him pull it off. They also discuss expanding the bass repertoire through transcription, the ways conducting and composing enhance a bassist's musicianship, and John's work as a teacher.     Peter Doubrovsky and Brandino on 5 string double basses

    Peter Doubrovsky and Brandino are both renowned musicians and fans of the 5-string double bass. Peter Doubrovsky, aside from his work with the Pasadena Symphony and POPS orchestra, is a highly sought-after recording musician. His illustrious career spans over twenty years, during which he has recorded for countless feature film soundtracks. Some notable works include Coco (2017), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Star Trek (2009), and Conspiracy Theory (1997). Brandino's success is marked by his collaborations with many of the world's top recording artists and entertainers. His extensive involvement encompasses the music, entertainment, television, multimedia, web designing, and film industries. In 2007, his musicianship was recognized with double Grammys for his participation in the 2007 Grammy Nominated "Album of the Year" and "Best Pop Vocal Album" Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds," Mary J Blige's "Breakthrough" which won 2006 Best R&B Album of the Year, Beyonce and Stevie Wonder's "So Amazing" single in 2005, and "OUTKAST" which bagged the 2004 Grammy Album Of The Year and Best Rap Album.
