The B-Side is Perth’s very own bi+ community radio show, every Wednesday Night from 9pm on DRN1 Radio. Join our hosts Ares, Bridget and Marie as they dive into what it means to be multi-gender attracted as they welcome local guests each week into deep and lighthearted conversations that matter most to bi+ folk. The B-Side broadcasts from Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar (Perth), in partnership with Bi+ Community Perth, to amplify local voices under the bi+ umbrella (including bisexual, pansexual, flexible, fluid, queer, curious and more) including people of all genders and celebrating intersectionality across the transgender, asexual (ace), agender and intersex communities and how bi+ folk fit into the broader LGBTQIA+ community.     Visible, Valid, and Unapologetic: The Fight for Bi+ Inclusion

    In this episode of The B-Side, hosts Bridget and Ares are joined by two amazing guests from the Bi+ Community Perth, Marie and Safi, as they discuss the themes of Bi+ visibility, community, and the importance of inclusion. We kick off the discussion by diving straight into the heart of the conversation about the significance of Bi+ Visibility Week (16th–23rd) and why the fight against Bi erasure is so crucial. Marie, a passionate advocate within the Bi+ Community Perth, shares her role in the group and what exciting events are coming up for Bi+ Visibility Week and beyond. Together, we explore what Bi+ visibility truly means, why it’s essential, and the challenges that come with being visible in a world that often diminishes bisexuality. We also talk about the strength and solidarity that comes from building community—examining how regular connection at Bi+ events creates a positive ripple effect. We’ll also dig into Bi erasure, discussing how this harmful process undermines bisexual identities, and how it intersects with the experiences of other marginalized groups in the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly trans, asexual, and agender individuals. Safi highlights the painful double dose of erasure that comes with being both Trans and Bi, illustrating how it feels to have your existence continually invalidated.     This episode of The B-Side is all about breaking down the misconception that bisexuality is “binary.” We explore how bi+ has always included attraction beyond just “man” or “woman” — embracing non-binary, trans, intersex, and gender-diverse experiences. From the Kinsey scale to personal stories, we talk about where we each sit on the spectrum, the many forms of attraction (romantic, emotional, platonic, aesthetic, intellectual, sensual), and why language like “bi+” is more inclusive.     Rewriting Attraction: Transition, Bias & Gateway Journeys

    As Trans Awareness Week draws to a close, The B-Side brings you a powerful and deeply reflective conversation with Dom — a transgender man whose journey through transition reshaped his understanding of attraction, masculinity, bisexuality and identity. In this episode, Ares, Marie and Slaine explore how gender discovery can open unexpected pathways into desire and self-acceptance. Dom shares how settling into his masculinity helped him recognise long-repressed attraction to men, and how he navigated bisexuality within a monogamous, hetero-presenting marriage through honesty, consent and continual communication. Together, the team dives into the complexities of dating as a trans person — from recognising genuine attraction to avoiding fetishisation, and how transness can often become a “gateway” for cis male bicuriosity. Dom speaks candidly about internalised bias, emotional labour and the pressures that come with other people’s curiosity, assumptions and boundaries. As the episode moves toward Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, the discussion turns to politics, visibility and allyship.     Building a Fairer Future: Dr Misty Farquhar on Bi+ Community, Law Reform & Queer Resistance in WA

    This week on The B-Side, Marie, Slaine and Ares are joined by someone who helped shape the very beginnings of our community: Dr Misty Farquhar (they/them), bi+ and non-binary advocate, educator, CEO of Rainbow Futures and founding organiser of Bi+ Community Perth. Together, we journey through Misty’s personal story — from creating spaces for bi+ people a decade ago, to becoming one of WA’s leading voices in LGBTQIA+ human rights. We reflect on the wins since marriage equality, the reforms still unfinished, and what it feels like to carry both the weight and the hope of this work. Misty breaks down the big political changes happening right now in WA, including updates to reproductive rights, surrogacy access, discrimination protections and the continuing push to ban conversion practices.     Beyond Binaries: Intersex Identity, Bi+ Belonging & Whole-Person Relationships

    What does it mean to live and love beyond binaries? In this episode of The B-Side, hosts Marie, Slaine and Ares are joined by Toby — a bi+, intersex and agender person and relationship counsellor — for a thoughtful conversation about identity, intimacy and connection beyond rigid categories. We explore how being intersex, agender and bi+ intersect in everyday life, shaping self-understanding, relationships and belonging in a world that still prefers simple labels. Toby shares lived experience around language, visibility and navigating both LGBTQIA+ spaces and broader society.     Bisexual representation in film and television has come a long way — but it’s still complicated, inconsistent, and often misunderstood. In this episode of The B-Side, hosts Marie, Bridget and Ares are joined by guest Slaine to unpack how bisexuality is portrayed in the media: when it feels authentic, when it falls into lazy or harmful tropes, and why visibility alone isn’t enough. We explore characters who got it right — from Rosa Diaz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and David Rose (Schitt’s Creek) to Kalinda Sharma (The Good Wife) — and examine where representation has missed the mark through erasure, stereotyping, and “it’s just a phase” narratives. Along the way, we discuss why hearing the word bisexual on screen matters, why bi men remain underrepresented, and how media portrayals shape real-world experiences for bi+ people. The conversation also touches on broader patterns in television, including over-sexualisation, invisibility, and the tendency to rewrite bisexual characters once they enter relationships with one gender.
