EP 4: Are You Listening… or Just Waiting to Respond?

You want to have the answers. You want to be solid. You want to be the one people can rely on. But here’s the question most men don’t ask themselves: What is it costing you to always be right? In this solo episode, Kier unpacks the hidden price of certainty and why the need to always have the answer can quietly damage your relationships, your growth, and your self-awareness. Using a real conversation with his wife about money, he walks through how quickly defensiveness can take over when your identity feels challenged and how that moment right there is where most men lose the opportunity to grow. Kier breaks down why curiosity feels so uncomfortable, especially for Black men who were raised to equate confidence with safety and uncertainty with risk. From being taught to “look strong” as boys to navigating spaces where being wrong can feel dangerous, this episode gets to the root of why so many men struggle to ask questions instead of proving points. Because the truth is when you always need to be right, people stop being real with you. Conversations turn into debates. Intimacy fades. And over time, people don’t get closer… they just get quieter. This episode challenges you to rethink what strength actually looks like. Not as having all the answers but as being willing to sit in discomfort long enough to understand something new. In this episode: Why defensiveness shuts down connection faster than you think How the need to be right can cost you intimacy, trust, and respect The link between masculinity, control, and fear of uncertainty Why criticism often holds the key to your blind spots (Johari Window) How curiosity can shift your relationships, leadership, and self-awareness The difference between proving a point and actually growing Key Quote: “Certainty is armor. Curiosity requires you to take it off.” If you’ve ever felt the urge to defend yourself before you fully understand what’s being said this episode will challenge you to slow down, ask better questions, and choose growth over ego.   The Challenge: The 7-Day Curiosity ShiftPick one area of your life home, work, friendships, or your relationship and for 7 days: Ask more questions than you make statements Wait 60 seconds before responding when you feel triggered Notice what changes in your conversations and connections   Connect With Us🌐 Website: www.learnedthehardwaypod.com🎙️ Leave a Voice Note: Drop Kier a message directly on the site📧 Email: learnedthehardwaypod@gmail.com📱 Follow the Show: @learnedthehardwaypod 👤 Follow Kier: @kiergaines Tap in: Share your thoughts, leave a review, or send this episode to someone who needs it. Session 467: Eating While Black

If you listened to last week’s episode, we explored soul food as a living tradition. We talked about how it continues to evolve, and how we’ve used it as a tool of expression across generations. This week, we’re continuing that conversation by looking at soul food from a wider scope. I’m happy to be joined by one of the leading voices in Black food studies, Dr. Psyche A. Williams-Forson. She is an award-winning scholar and cultural historian whose work explores the connections between food, race, gender, and culture. She’s the author of ‘Eating While Black: Food Shaming and Race in America’ and ‘Building Houses out of Chicken Legs,’ where she invites us to look beyond just the food we’re consuming and ask deeper questions about who gets to define what we eat, and what those definitions say about us and our shared experiences. In this conversation she helps us understand the many ways that food can serve as a lens into cultural memory and how Black communities have created meaning and identity through what we cook and share. EP 1: The Hidden Cost of Being the Man Everyone Needs You to Be

You’ve been doing it so long you don’t even notice anymore. Adjusting your tone, softening your edges, shrinking yourself just enough to fit the room. And at the end of the day you’re exhausted not from the work, but from who you had to be to do it. In this episode, Kier Gaines gets real about masking and code-switching: what it is, where it comes from, and the quiet psychological tax it takes from men who’ve learned to survive by shapeshifting. From his first corporate job to the clinical research behind double consciousness, Kier breaks down why so many men are walking around depleted and what it actually looks like to stop disappearing. This one’s going to hit close to home. That’s the point. Key Takeaways ∙ What masking really costs you? Kier breaks down the emotional, relational, and identity-level consequences of performing your way through every room you enter ∙ W.E.B. Du Bois, Sterling K. Brown, and the science behind why we do it the history, the culture, and the psychology of double consciousness explained in real terms ∙ Three ways to start taking the armor off  practical, tiered tools for men who are ready to stop surviving and start actually living Connect with us  What parts of yourself feel the most edited and who are you editing them for? Well-Being Rituals with Koya Webb

Devi sits down with Koya Webb to explore what it means to thrive without perfection—through intentional choices, genuine self-worth, and practices that help regulate the nervous system. Koya reflects on a year that brought both marriage and profound loss, including a car accident, miscarriage, and the deaths of loved ones. Through it all, she discovered that grief can become “the accelerator for embodiment.” With refreshing honesty, Koya shares that even after years of wellness practice, she found herself dysregulated, lonely, and needing to deepen her relationships and support system. This conversation is a powerful reminder that wellbeing isn't defined by what we achieve, but by whether we feel connected, supported, and like we truly belong. As Koya notes, having community and a sense of belonging is one of the strongest indicators of longevity and overall well-being. Together, they discuss what it really looks like to design a meaningful life while navigating grief, pressure, and leadership. Koya shares how transforming everyday routines into rituals, intentionally creating beauty and joy, and returning to the breath can help us come back to ourselves. The breath is the master. You'll also hear powerful insights on boundaries, leadership, and choosing alignment over people-pleasing, along with Koya's invitation into deeper healing through a seven-day breathwork experience inspired by her book. EP 12: How Much Should You Care? Ft. Crissle West

What happens when being the person everyone depends on becomes the thing that's breaking you? In this episode, Kier Gaines sits down with media personality, cultural critic, and podcast host Crissle for a conversation about empathy, emotional labor, boundaries, and the hidden weight of being the person everyone turns to when life falls apart. What starts as a discussion about therapy training quickly becomes something much bigger. Kier and Crissle explore what happens when caring isn't just something you do it's something you're wired for. Both have spent years studying people, understanding behavior, navigating relationships, and helping others make sense of their lives. But somewhere along the way comes a difficult question: How much responsibility are you supposed to carry for other people's healing? Together, they unpack the complicated line between support and enabling.Because sometimes caring looks like showing up.And sometimes caring looks like stepping back. In This Episode • Why people with therapy training often see relationships differently• What happens when your identity becomes tied to helping others• Compassion fatigue and emotional burnout• The difference between support and enabling• Being the person everyone calls during a crisis• How to know when someone's problem isn't yours to solve• Boundaries that don't feel like abandonment• Caring for yourself without feeling selfish• The emotional labor expected of Black men and Black women• What Crissle's Couch offers that traditional therapy cannot• Who you are when you're no longer taking care of everyone else At its core, this episode asks a question many people never stop to consider: If being needed disappeared tomorrow... Evolution Designed Your Senses to Hide Reality | Donald Hoffman

Every time you open your eyes, you're not seeing reality. According to the mathematics of evolution, you never have. Donald Hoffman is a cognitive scientist and professor who has spent over 40 years building mathematical models of perception. His book The Case Against Reality makes one of the most unsettling arguments in modern science: your senses didn't evolve to reveal the truth. They evolved to hide it. Think of your body, your thoughts, your memories, and your entire experience of this world as a VR headset. Not a metaphor. A working model backed by mathematics. The headset gives you exactly what you need to play the game of life. It hides what is actually running underneath. Consciousness isn't a product of the brain. It's the other way around. Neurons don't exist when no one is looking. Nothing in your behavior is caused by neural activity. What's actually driving your life is something science is only now beginning to map. The way out isn't more information. It's a practice. The silence between your thoughts? That's you. When you learn to watch your emotions instead of becoming them, the grip of every story you've been telling yourself starts to release.
