Be There in Five

Kate Kennedy

Be There in Five is a pop culture and millennial zeitgeist-focused podcast by Kate Kennedy (entrepreneur, author, pop culture commentator). Long-form and solo hosted, Be There in Five explores different facets of popular culture in a comedic, thoughtful, and analytical way, covering entertainment, social media, bloggers/influencers, and celebrities, in addition to focusing on the humor found in reexamining the 90s/00s as an adult (from AIM to Zenon). As one listener described it, “come for the relatable humor and lighthearted topics, stay for the surprising levels of depth and thoughtfulness injected into them.”

  2. The Kate of Ophelia (TS12 Pregame Special)

The Kate of Ophelia (TS12 Pregame Special)

Kate's pregaming The Life of a Showgirl's release by partying the only way she knows how: gabbing about Hamlet. In this bonus episode (available on Patreon and maybe Apple Subscriptions if she can figure it out, but it's the same thing, so don't buy it twice!), Kate explores the literary and symbolic significance of Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet as potential inspiration for Taylor Swift's upcoming album. She draws parallels between Ophelia's "mad woman" courtroom scene and the Tortured Poets Department prologue, and muses if TS may be subverting the archetype of the tragic, powerless woman by maintaining agency and breaking the fourth wall as the showgirl. Kate also dives into numerology Easter eggs from New Heights (particularly the number 47 and its connection to April 7th, 2026), speculates on what might be announced that date, and examines how the album cover (with TS making direct eye contact from the bathtub) challenges the passive, vacant-eyed Ophelia of the famous painting. Does she think this literary analysis is foreshadowing for what's to come on the album? Honestly, not really... more often than not, these symbolic references serve as shorthand to represent universal themes and have little to do with academic accuracy, but Ophelia was left out of the original "Taylor Swift: Symbolic Self-Portraiture" episode, and today felt like a good day for a spiral. One more sleep til Showtime! Enjoy!

Loving Him Was Redbird (The Summer I Turned Pretty with @lucyontheground)

This week, Kate brings in a friend of hers and a friend of the pod, Lucy Carey (aka @lucyontheground), for an in-depth discussion about the series “The Summer I Turned Pretty" [ALERT: the TV series version, they aren't book experts]. They explore the cultural phenomenon of the series, its massive viewership, intense stan-dom, the love triangle, and complex character dynamics between Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah (and Redbird??). They go through key moments, episodes, character motivations, songs, Easter eggs, Jere and Belly’s biggest flops, and so much more. And, Baby, That's Dough Business for You

This week, Kate listened to a two-hour football podcast and lives to tell the tale. In this podcast episode about a podcast episode, Kate obsesses over a 30-something woman and her boyfriend existing and being normal, which surprisingly turned out to be the best entertainment of all. She recaps Taylor Swift's unprecedented appearance on New Heights, where we learned about TS12: The Life of a Showgirl, coming October 3rd. She breaks down her personal interview highlights, from SAT vocab words to otters to human exclamation marks and having fun. She was particularly struck by the Sourdough (10-minute version) airtime that was devoted exclusively to bread puns. She also talks through what we know so far about TS12 and gets excited to make space for more Blank Space pop on this album, exclusively produced by Max Martin and Shellback. Enjoy!
