Carol Aherne, PhD - You Only Regret the Things You Don't Do

Dr. Aherne is an Assistant Professor at University College Dublin School of Medicine. She earned her PhD from University College Dublin followed by a post-doc and assistant professorship at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. I caught up with Dr. Aherne at last years FASEB epithelial biology conference in steamboat springs and we discussed the challenges facing young faculty both in the US and Ireland. The Clinical Problem Solvers w/ Reza Manesh, MD and Rabih Geha, MD

Drs. Manesh and Geha are the co-founders of the "Clinical Problem Solvers" and join us today to discuss finding their passion for clinical reasoning, the origins of CP solvers, and their thoughts on how medical education should evolve. Reza Manesh, MD is a hospitalist at the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Associate Professor of Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine. He is co-founder of the Clinical Problem Solvers. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed internal medicine residency training at the University of California San Francisco, where he received the Jeffrey Weingarten Award for exemplifying the personal and professional qualities of a UCSF physician. His first faculty position was at Johns Hopkins University where he was awarded the Osler House Staff Faculty Teaching Award. Rabih Geha, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UCSF. He is based at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and is the Director of Education for the ED overseeing the education of Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine residents. Clinically, he splits his time between the emergency room and the inpatient teaching wards. Rabih is also the co-founder of the Clinical Problem Solvers, a multimodal medical education venture run by a global (& incredibly diverse!) team that hosts a weekly podcast (Dx reasoning, Anti-Racism, Women in Medicine, Queer Rounds), live virtual morning report, and other medical education content. Boghuma Titanji, MD, PhD - Pieces of the Puzzle

Dr. Boghuma Titanji is an infectious disease fellow at Emory University. Dr. Titanji earned her MD in Cameroon, followed by 2 years in general practice before moving to England to pursue graduate school. She earned her Master's in Tropical Medicine and International Health from the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene followed by a Ph.D. in Infectious diseases from University College London. She then completed residency training in internal medicine at Emory before pursuing her ID fellowship. Dr. Titanji has been a TED talk speaker and was one of the BBC’s 100 Women Changing the World in 2014 for her work on advancing ethically sound research. Dr. Emily Gottenborg is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado within the Hospital Medicine Group. She earned her undergraduate degree in chemistry from Williams College, completed medical school at Boston University School of Medicine, and residency and chief residency at the University of California, San Francisco. She served as Chief Resident of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, where she developed an interest in developing curricula around QI, Patient Safety, and Value in Healthcare. She joined the Hospital Medicine Group at University of Colorado in 2014. Her interests include curriculum development, and leadership in healthcare with a focus on medical student and resident education and development. Dr. Mel Anderson is an academic hospitalist and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He serves as the National Program Executive Director for Hospital Medicine in the Veterans Healthcare Administration. Dr. Anderson graduated AOA from the University of Texas, Houston, School of Medicine (AKA McGovern School of Medicine) in 1994 and completed Internal Medicine residency and a Chief Residency at the David Grant United States Air Force Medical Center. Kimryn Rathmell, MD-PhD - Lifelong Learning

Dr. Kimryn Rathmell is the Chair of Medicine at Vanderbilt University. She is the Physician in Chief at Vanderbilt Hospital, the Hugh Jackson Morgan Chair in Medicine, the Deputy Director for Research Integration and Career Development, and Professor of Biochemistry at Vanderbilt University. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa and her MD and PhD from Stanford University. She did her residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania. Briana Christophers - Be Bold

Briana Christophers is a 4th year MD-PhD student at the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD program. Though early in her academic and scientific career, Briana has already established herself as a thought-leader and a strong advocate for diversity in the physician-scientist pathway. As an undergraduate at Princeton University, she worked in organizations such as Princeton Latinos y amigos, the Latinx Collective and initiatives including Project Welcome Mat: A Guide for First-Generation students, all work that was recognized by the Frederick Douglass Service Award, the Spirit of Princeton Award, and the Santos-Dumont Award for Innovation. Now, in addition to the demands of MD-PhD training, Briana continues this work by co-running the Association of Diverse Physician-Scientists in Training, as a co-author and lead editor of the Free Guide to Medical School Admissions, and by developing the Mini-lessons by Medical Scientists video series.
