    Patrick broke his neck

I’ve never had an injury that was serious enough to be what I would think of as “life changing” but some people have. It’s a pretty deep idea to think about. I came across this post online recently. Here’s what this woman wrote: I experienced a life changing injury 6 months ago, which has left me very physically disabled and in excruciating pain 24/7. I am waiting for scans in the next month, after being refused medical care in the country where I was injured, but it is likely there is very little to be done to fix this. I am also trying physical therapy to get better, but so far with no results and just increased pain. The situation is making me severely depressed, and I really need to find some acceptance for what happened, and my life moving forward. I am in therapy already for some other stuff, but not able to come to acceptance for this injury yet. I'm stuck feeling despair and anger, and like I'm only a burden for the people around me, including my partner. I can't work, nor participate in fun activities that requires anything other than sitting, and even that I cannot do for long. I can't go for walks, sex is painful, almost all my hobbies are no longer possible. I barely sleep because of the pain, so I'm always sleep deprived as well. I have to be medicated for pain through the day and night to even be able to talk or move. If I try to skip a day, I cannot function. I really would like to feel that life is worth living even with chronic severe pain and physical disabilities I never imagined having to deal with. I spend so much energy and tears on feeling upset about the situation, and it's interfering with me at least feeling as okay as I possibly can. I need to find radical acceptance, but I feel so heart broken when I try. I don't know what to do. I can just hear the despair in her words. She wrote that in an online forum 5 years ago, so I would love to know how she’s doing today. But I don’t. My guest today is Patrick, and he knows what it’s like to have an accident that results in a life-changing injury. He was young and athletic, and he loved to go surfing and run ultramarathons. But then one day he broke his neck, and he had no idea what the rest of his life was going to look like. Dada: The birth of an art movement

In 1916, Zurich was a beacon for refugees. Fleeing the death and destruction of World War I, artists and free-thinkers from all over Europe fled to the neutral Swiss city. And it was here that the people who would start the art movement Dada came together. In a rare interview from 1959, held in the BBC archive, Richard Huelsenbeck describes how the group of young artists and pacifists shared a despair about the war and a disgust for bourgeois values. At the Cabaret Voltaire, he and the Romanian French-born poet Tristan Tzara, the French sculptor Jean Arp and Romanian-Israeli artist Marcel Janco experimented. Performances were known for their spontaneity, chance and absurdity - a departure from the conventional which confronted audiences. It was the beginning of an aesthetic which would spread across Europe and to New York City, eventually influencing Surrealism and later punk. This episode is produced and presented by Josephine McDermott. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by and curious about the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from how the Excel spreadsheet was developed, the creation of cartoon rabbit Miffy and how the sound barrier was broken. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: the moment Reagan and Gorbachev met in Geneva, Haitian singer Emerante de Pradines’ life and Omar Sharif’s legendary movie entrance in Lawrence of Arabia. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, like the invention of a stent which has saved lives around the world; the birth of the G7; and the meeting of Maldives’ ministers underwater. We cover everything from World War Two and Cold War stories to Black History Month and our journeys into space. 6 days ago

My father and the curse of the golden egg

Serena Kutchinsky was 10 years old when her jeweller father Paul unveiled his masterpiece to the world: a giant, golden, diamond-encrusted egg. Paul had recently taken over the family business, the celebrated London jewellers House of Kutchinsky, and wanted to make his mark, commissioning the production of a spectacular jewelled object like no other. The egg was crafted from 15kg of solid gold, decorated with over 20,000 rare pink diamonds, and put on sale for £7m – today’s equivalent of around $30m. After it was completed, the egg was finally unveiled to the public at Basel Art Fair in April 1990 before heading on a ‘world tour’ to find a buyer. But it soon became apparent that there was a problem: no one wanted to buy it. Paul had gambled his century-old family business on the egg, but within a year of its making the firm had crumbled and Serena’s family had fallen apart. The egg itself would be repossessed by the company that had supplied its dazzling pink diamonds. No one in the Kutchinsky family would speak of the egg for years – until decades later, Serena went looking for it.
