    Repentance and the Nature of Sin, Luke 13:1-9

    A healthy understanding of the pervasiveness of sin helps us to repent well. Our need for repentance, Jesus reminds us, is so much greater than the sins that we remember, or even the sins that we intentionally commit. We began Lent with the reminder that dead things go into the ground and become dust; but we are now reminded that true repentance plants our lives in good dirt that leads to a fruitful life. So repentance is not necessarily about making us feel bad about ourselves, but about making it big enough--true soil change--so that our lives are life-giving.
