The Current Politics of Eastern Mediterranean Sea

In this episode of Radio Revolt, host Fatih Kalkan delves into one of the most intricate  geopolitical regions in the world, which is the East Mediterranean. Once the energy sources first found in the early 1990s, the region expected to become a potential hub for peace and cooperation through shared energy resources, contrarily, the region has instead become an arena for growing competition and mistrust among neighbouring states Diverging national interests, exclusionary energy projects such as the EastMed pipeline, and the failure of liberal internationalist approaches have turned energy from a peace-building opportunity into a source of conflict. Countries like Turkey, Greece, Israel, and Cyprus have become entangled in a web of disputes over maritime borders, exclusive economic zones, and security alliances. To unpack these complex layers, Kalkan is joined by Prof. Zuhal Mert Uzuner from Marmara University, an expert in Greek–Turkish relations and East Mediterranean politics. Together, they explore the geopolitical narratives driving the region — from the centrality of the Cyprus question and the breakdown of Turkish–Israeli cooperation to the growing strategic autonomy debate surrounding Turkey’s Blue Homeland (Mavi Vatan) doctrine. The conversation examines how geography, history, and national identity shape regional rivalries: why the Black Sea remains relatively stable while the Mediterranean faces perpetual tension; how schoolbooks, media, and literature reinforce national myths; and why every decade brings a new crisis without resolving the old ones. Through these discussions, the programme offers listeners a nuanced understanding of how energy, identity, and strategic ambition intersect to redefine power politics in the East Mediterranean.

Art in Conversation: Guided Tour & Debate from Halle für Kunst Steiermark

This Radio Re:volt show takes you on a journey through two current exhibitions at Halle für Kunst Steiermark: A Song of Ascents by Louise Giovanelli and Viscous City by Evelyn Plaschg. The broadcast was created as part of a collaborative radio workshop, where participants explored the exhibitions, learned about the works, and shared their thoughts in an open conversation. The program includes a recorded guided tour through both exhibitions, followed by a debate with nine workshop participants. Together, they reflect on the art, what it evoked for them, and how contemporary painting can connect to personal memories, social spaces, and our digital lives. Louise Giovanelli’s A Song of Ascents presents striking, dreamlike paintings that seem to glow with light. Her works often show quiet, mysterious scenes: a closed curtain, a shining lock of hair, or a reflective cocktail glass through which a figure appears. Many of her characters, often women, seem to be on the verge of a new experience or realization. Her imagery leaves space for interpretation, like a memory you can almost recall or a dream that fades as you wake. Evelyn Plaschg’s Viscous City takes a different but equally powerful approach to painting. Her works move between the abstract and the figurative, capturing the intimacy and tension of our time. They explore themes of desire, relationships, and the collective spaces — real and imagined — where people meet and interact. Plaschg’s paintings also reflect how her generation has learned to present, stage, and reshape their bodies and identities, both online and offline. Both exhibitions are open to the public at Halle für Kunst Steiermark until 28 September 2025. This radio show invites you to listen, reflect, and perhaps visit the exhibitions yourself to create your own impressions.
