Ultimatums, Discovering your Baseline and New Brew

Ultimatums, Discovering your Baseline and New Brew

“It still feels like a miracle to me. How I was able to do something I never thought I could do. It’s so important to connect back to moments like that when facing something difficult.”

Justin Wolf started New Brew, a euphoric seltzer, about a year ago after leaving alcohol behind in October 2021. Despite looking like a well-adjusted human with a successful career and marriage, Justin was hiding a dirty little secret (or so he thought). An ultimatum and the healing power of psychedelic drugs led him to find freedom from alcohol and create his own sober•ish journey.  After years of traditional treatment from therapy to pharmaceuticals it was when he developed his own tool kit of support that he was able to truly step into his version of sobriety.

He shares about the importance of finding your baseline without any substance, including coffee, to know what it feels like to just operate as you and the power of showing yourself “I’m okay when I have nothing in my system.”

We discuss how just because people don’t want to drink alcohol doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t want to partake in an altering activity, it’s just the booze that is destructive for them.   We talk about how important it is for young kids to know what alcohol really does to your body and mind as so much development is going on during the times that kids are taught alcohol is cool.

This is such an important conversation as we are in a time where there are so many healing modalities outside of what we have traditionally thought of. I am so grateful for people like Justin and his team who are disrupting the booze industry and I could not be more in their corner. Check out New Brew at www.drinknewbrew.com.

JUSTIN WOLF, CEO & CO-FOUNDER OF NEW BREW

Justin Wolf started New Brew after being frustrated by all the non-alc and "functional beverage" options that didn't live up to their claims. While traveling in Mexico, he experienced the transformative benefits of Kava Root and Kratom Leaf, and set out with his two brothers to create a RTD beverage for California Sober and health conscious individuals like him. Before starting New Brew, Justin spent five years leading Global Partnerships at Google and launched Drip Drop, an electrolyte powder hydration supplement that is now sold at pharmacies across the US. Throughout his career, Justin has been an early investor and advisor in the psychedelic medicine space.  Now, along with his two brothers, Justin is on a mission to give consumers better alternatives to alcohol, and educate people about the transformative benefits of plants.www.drinknewbrew.com

Stacey - Safety, Wasted Energy and the Stories we tell ourself

Stacey - Safety, Wasted Energy and the Stories we tell ourself

Stacey - Safety, Wasted Energy and the Stories we tell ourself

“I had to work through the fear. What does it look like? It only looks like what I want it to look like. It doesn't have to mean anything and I didnt have to explain it. It looks like I honor myself.”

Stacey was never a big drinker as she always felt unsafe around those who were inebriated and never wanted to find herself in an unsafe place. She started to slowly drink more. It became a habit that didn't totally disrupt her life but she found herself spending more energy on it than she wanted. After spending time with me Stacey truly stepped into conscious drinking over habitual actions. Through her journey she has uncovered all sorts of goodies that she shares in today’s episode.

How it was the impact after the drink that always caught up to her. The feeling of being bloated and puffy and then the thoughts that would spiral from there into more and more negative thoughts completely distracting her from the love she was meant to receive.

How when her adult kids jokingly called her a  “party mom”, she was totally caught off guard as she did everything she could to NOT be perceived that way.How she realized she was  wanting to drink to fit in but the more she stepped into trusting herself she knows she can't be left out because she is complete with herself. About Stacey As an empowerment coach, Stacey firmly believes that true power emanates from within. The journey is about discovering the strength, resilience, and skills that will propel you to thrive in your professional adventure. She became certified so she could share this life-changing work with other women and let them know there's another way! A way where you listen to that voice inside, your intuition and trust, that is guiding you. Crushing your goals and desires from a life of calm and ease!

Tommy - Math of booze, Full Body Gratitude and the Discipline of Self-Care

Tommy - Math of booze, Full Body Gratitude and the Discipline of Self-Care

“I'm really thankful for my mind, my body, my heart, my intuition. my gut. They came in and supported me in this decision. “You are okay without this. In fact, you're better,” I feel it in my bones. I’m just done with alcohol.”

Tommy started his sober•ish journey with a one month trial in November and loved it. LIke most of us his alcohol intake had upticked during COVID and he joined his wife to explore what a sober trial could feel like.  He by no means felt it was a problem but knew there was something there. After a sober November he experimented with the ish into December which was key in him deciding that alcohol no longer serves the man he wants to be especially as someone who values their intuition, sleep and impact on the world.

We talk about the full body thank you he has received knowing he is putting himself first and is no longer making things more difficult for himselfThe power of the math not mathing when the drink is costing you more than it's giving you and how at some point it's looking clearly at the data and making the decision.

The power of AF options and how as someone who couldn't drink alcoholic beer, finding AF beers has been so much fun but even he believes that may be off the books in the future.

It would mean the world to me if you subscribe, leave a review, and share this podcast with your friends, co-workers, and families. This will help the trajectory of this podcast and allow others who are seeking freedom from alcohol to find this podcast.

Whitney - Accidental Sobriety, Sensuality and Permission Slips

Whitney - Accidental Sobriety, Sensuality and Permission Slips

“Alcohol robs you of your opportunity to cultivate your power from your own courage. When you are courageous sober you learn that you can trust yourself to do bigger and scarier things. And other things you thought were scary become less so and your edges continue to grow.”

This one is a spicy episode people so be ready. I met Whitney at a retreat where she led a session called … wait for it… Transcendent Orgasms. To say we were all terrified would be an understatement ( stay tuned till end when I share my story).

Whitney fell into accidental sobriety almost 10 years ago when she became pregnant with her son. Having her first drink at 19 and never really loving the taste, but loving how it made her less inhibited, she made the choice to not introduce alcohol to her life.

We talk about the permission slip (or an excuse) alcohol gives us to be fully expressed in a world that wants to tell us exactly how women should behave.

How it's not sober sex we are scared of but sober vulnerability and how we must create safety in our bodies and courage in our souls and cannot do that authentically if alcohol plays a role.

How you give your sexual power and expression and radiance to the care of a substance that really belongs to you and the exponential growth that comes when you take that power back.

I am obsessed and a tad uncomfortable with this conversation which means it must be spoken about.

It would mean the world to me if you subscribe, leave a review, and share this podcast with your friends, co-workers, and families. This will help the trajectory of this podcast and allow others who are seeking freedom from alcohol to find this podcast.

Margy - Art of Wine, Sober Wingman and Sober Inclusivity

Margy - Art of Wine, Sober Wingman and Sober Inclusivity

“I said to this interventionist, ‘Look. If you take away my drinking. It's not going to stop the fact I'm a single mom or that I have this jerk of an ex-husband or that I work this crazy corporate job and that I’m barely making ends meet.’ He smiled and said, ‘No but it will change you.’”

Margy recently celebrated 19 years of sobriety on February 7th but it was just a little over four months ago when she made this a public statement.

She took her first sip at 8, disgusted with the flavor and burn but intrigued by the warmth. Her drinking was “normal” through adolescent and young adulthood but took a turn after her divorce. She was head of PTA, single soccer mom of two with a corporate job and never missed any events but also never missed a detour to the liquor store.  Making it all look normal on the outside didn’t trick her family as her brother hosted a family intervention that set her sobriety on track.

Why 19 years of sobriety before being more public? At 10 years sober she shared her story on stage and was told by several influential people that she shouldn’t share that piece of her because she would be judged. She quit speaking her truth until now when her passion for creating inclusive spaces outweighs fear of judgment.

She shares the way she justified her alcohol use for years including that wine tasting was an art and part of a nice dinner to it wasn't a drunk driving accident that ended with the jaws of life but bad weather.

The power of having someone believe in you even when you don't and how seeing people  doing what you don't think you can is such an inspiration. We talk about the need to create sober inclusive spaces at all events and making events less alcohol forward (even drinkers are on board with this) and how sober inclusive doesn't mean no booze but not just events focused around booze.

She shares her term Sober Wingman, those who drink but are your 100% cheerleader and support system, and what a key role they play in the sober inclusivity movement.

    About Margy

Margy Schaller is a speaker coach and the co-founder of Sober Life Rocks.  She has been sober for 19 years but only recently felt comfortable sharing her sobriety in her professional circles.

Sober Life Rocks is a membership-based community for people who are sober, sober-ish, sober-curious, and our favorite, our sober wingmen.  Our primary mission is to ensure that no one feels alone at business functions.  In addition to supporting each other in community, we are also working with meeting planners and event organizers to normalize sober choices by creating more sober-inclusive environments. In addition to providing alcohol-free options, this encompasses creating a variety of environments at parties where everyone can network and connect comfortably, regardless of what's in their cup.
