When the world changes and nothing works like it used to, you can choose to either panic or plan your new route ahead. Amy did the latter with gusto and is currently thriving in her post-pandemic work life. We talked about bootstrapping your own learning journey, making curiosity a part of everyday life and how endurance sport helps to cultivate grit on and off the track.

⭐️   ABOUT AMY HOPKINS

Amy was previously Managing Editor of Women's Magazine South Africa as well as the ex-food editor of Women's Health Magazine.

She is very passionate about all things food and have been a published recipe developer for over five years, with a cookbook called LOVE FOOD published in English and Afrikaans in December 2020.

Amy has worked in the media and publishing industry since 2007, she has extensive experience in digital marketing, brand building, events and content – across all platforms – and that resulted in her launching her own business, Amy Hopkins Media, about 1 year ago.

She has worked with amazing brands like Totalsports, News24, and Conde Nast among others.

She is also an avid endurance athlete training and competing regularly in cycling, running and most recently, triathlons.

I have been following some of Amy’s adventures over the last couple of years, and also had the opportunity to meet up for a bike ride or two, and what was immediately apparent to me was the seeming ease with which she navigates change, transition and the new.

Ahmed Tilly is a creative consultant with over 25 years of experience in the marketing, advertising and creative communication industry. Ahmed founded the legendary Black River FC creative agency in 2005, where he worked alongside brands like 1st For Women, MINI, Virgin Money, Mazda. Ahmed has famously conceptualised and worked to institutionalise the now globally reputable Nando’s campaigns, along with their unique brand of humour and political commentary. Ahmed has won numerous awards - too many to mention, not just for his work but also for the manner in which he is respected and looked up to by other creative leaders here and around the world. He is bringing both his expertise and experience as a creative giant to the judging panels of the South African Loerie Awards and the international Cannes Lions festival. I first met Ahmed when he graciously agreed to come and spend a few minutes with our team. I was immediately impressed by his generous nature, his humble approach and the sincerity with which he connects and communicates with strangers and friends alike.

He has managed to capitalise on this incredible talent when it comes to understanding clients, advising them on what they should do next, and generally building long-standing, trustworthy relationships and adding consistent value in the process. In a time of crisis and critical business decision-making, Jackie van Niekerk and her incredible team at Attacq Ltd leveraged their commitment to building a business focused on the needs of people to not only survive the economic onslaught but thrive through it. I asked Jackie about her own career journey, what she has learned along the way and how she sees the future for growing professionals in South Africa.

With over 15 years of experience in the property industry, Jackie is the CEO of Attacq Ltd. For those who do not know - Attacq stewards an impressive property portfolio that includes Waterfall City and Mall of Africa, among many others. Jackie joined Pivotal Property Fund in 2009 and became the youngest and only woman CEO in the property sector, growing the organisation to an R12 billion listed development fund. Jackie joined Attacq as the COO in April 2017 and was appointed CEO about a year ago. I met Jackie when we started collaborating with Attacq on brand, communications and a couple of other things, and I was immediately impressed by her down-to-earth nature and steady, confident leadership. What I’ve learned from Jackie so far is to be careful not to over-complicate things, and that there is always a workable solution - our job is to find it and make it happen.

Combining an adventurous spirit with a creative drive, and turning both into a full-time career, is much easier said than done. Endurance cyclist slash cartoonist Tegan Phillips is well on her way to doing just that. She shares her journey and learnings on the way. 👇  

⭐️  ABOUT TEGAN PHILLIPS  

There are too many words and ideas to describe what Tegan does as both a professional and an amateur at heart. However, she is an adventurer, author, cartoonist, cyclist, advocate, entrepreneur and speaker.  Some of her more daring adventures include cycling through Spain, traversing Africa on an 11,000km family bike trip, completing the equivalent of 10 IronMan triathlons across New Zealand, and most recently, preparing for a world-record attempt at cycling from Cairo to Cape Town.  Tegan is also a prolific author and cartoonist, collaborating closely with global brands like Giant/Liv Bicycles, Strava and Komoot, while also appearing at national speaking events like TEDx and more. 

Professionally qualified as a legal expert, Tegan has refused to settle for a mainstream career, instead opting to follow her heart and gut as she journeys towards finding her own unique expression of what it means to build a career and make a living.  I met Tegan on a random bike trip a couple of years ago, and was immediately impressed by her love for dogs and doughnuts - actually her capacity for ideation and learning is what struck me most.
