Where do Folktales and Superstitious Stories come from?

Where do Folktales and Superstitious Stories come from?

In every culture, there are urban legends, spurious truths and superstitions that form part of the canon. Everyone knows a strange tale of something that never happened but that influences seemingly trivial choices we make daily; a story that was told by an uncle or a grandparent when we were children, one that no one can explain. In this episode, we speak to two guests, who illuminate the conversation and help investigate the questions around folktales and superstitions, and where these stories come from?

    Why Afrikaans?

    Why Afrikaans?

Many years have passed since the Soweto student uprising of 16 June 1976, but discussions and controversy around Afrikaans as a home language and medium of instruction in many South African schools have not changed. Why is that?

We open the episode with a clip from popular actress Ayanda Boroto, talking about her frustrations (which many South Africans share) on the subject. Her clip is followed by the opinions of two experts in the field who talk about the winners and losers the system creates and share their perspectives on possible solutions.

Guests (and links): Kagisho Masae, edu-tech entrepreneur; Lia Snijman, project manager at a language services company.

    Understanding the Value Of Art

    Understanding the Value Of Art

In today's we explore the value of art. Why is that some art pieces are priced more highly than others? Is it because of the material used, the time it took to create it, the emotional sentiment attached to it or the acclaimed reputation of the artist? We chat to two incredible women in the arts to get a better understanding:

Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi - South African-American painter and multi-media artist. Tollmand Award winning visual artist. She holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work has exhibited in several countries including South Africa, United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Vernice and Portugal.

In 2011 she took up Directorship of one of SA’s foremost visual arts NGO's, the Fordsburg Artists’ Studios, more fondly known as the Bag Factory. She sits on a number of Boards within the visual arts and the creative sector more generally. Sara has a Bachelor in Dramatic Arts and a post graduate diploma in Business. Miss Motau ,

Incredible Poscast

I have so many random questions and I love that someone is tackling some of them! Loved the short V-Day chat - please do more shorts.

RMTshetlo ,

Suggestions.

Absolutely wonderful podcast. I question things like this myself.

I’ve always wanted to know why people tie value to objects( cars, bags, designer etc). And why do people have a perception of them. Why is this a thing in life.

I would like to hear your view on that

Karabo Rej ,

Which one is a better investment?

I just read that Hermès Birkin is a better investment than stock in Hermès.

Over a 35 year period:

Hedge funds make just 6% on average. The US stock market makes 11% a year

What about returns from a Birkin?

Birkin value has increased 500% across the last 35 years (roughly 14% per year). In fact– Birkins outperform the stock market nearly every year
