You Are Not Your Mistakes | Live Event | Ep 173

The Dear Son Network creates honest conversations about fatherhood, masculinity, and the life lessons many men never hear growing up. Dear Son: Are You Shackled to Your Past? Fatherhood, Forgiveness & Breaking Cycles In this live, unscripted episode of The Dear Son Show, hosts D Johns and Jey Blac lead a candid conversation on the topic “Dear Son, you will always be shackled to your past,” exploring how past mistakes and family history shape identity, parenting, and relationships. They discuss using the past as a navigation tool rather than a prison, the duty of demonstrating change, and whether others get to decide when they’re “over” what you did. Audience members share stories about parenting older vs. younger kids, childhood trauma passed down from parents, rebuilding after incarceration, and how unforgiveness can keep people bound. The hosts emphasize accountability without labeling someone by their mistakes, encourage setting boundaries and having hard conversations, and challenge listeners to release people they’ve been holding hostage to the past. 00:00 Unscripted Show Setup 00:29 Welcome and Live Energy 01:57 Tonight’s Topic Past Shackles 03:30 Past Shaping Fatherhood 05:57 Absentee Dad Two Paths 09:22 Remorse With Older Kids 10:45 Audience Advice Parenting Never Stops 14:16 Shackled vs In Touch 15:30 Who Sets The Timeframe 17:00 Breaking Generational Shackles 20:32 Unforgiveness and Self Forgiveness 23:13 Who Benefits From Shackles 27:09 Tank vs Healing Sensitivity 29:44 Life As A Retakeable Test 30:04 Release Your Errors 30:28 Learn From Everyone 31:28 Unshackling Dad 36:17 Mistakes Aren't Identity 37:55 Parenting Without Trauma 45:34 Know Each Kid 47:14 Conversations Break Cycles 49:07 Humor Anger and Growth 52:58 Release and Reconnect 53:47 Disrupt to Break Cycles 57:54 Final Thanks and Outro #fathersonrelationship #adviceformen #modernfatherhood #adultchildren #lifelessonsformen #raisingmen #raisingkids #mantalk Follow James: https://instagram.com/jeyblac Also, if you've made it this far, don't forget to: 1. subscribe to the channel, 2. turn on the notifications, 3. like this video, 4. leave a comment, and 5. share this content with someone who needs it. GEORGIA & KELSEY: Grieving Phoenix Has Been Harder Than Tom

Georgia Jones and Kelsey Parker are back together for an episode that perfectly captures the messy reality of motherhood. The heavy bits, the joyful bits, and everything in between. Kelsey opens up about the truth that grief doesn’t stop motherhood and motherhood doesn’t stop purpose. She reflects on why grieving Phoenix has, in some ways, felt harder than Tom with the children being older, and how even in the depths of grief, life as a mum keeps moving. The conversation lightens as they move on to Kelsey’s newfound love of home cooking, how it’s become grounding, creative, and unexpectedly comforting during a tough chapter. Georgia then shares her latest 40 Before 40 list, inspired by listener Kirsty, though she’s very clear there are some things she absolutely will not be attempting. And of course, We Listen & We Don’t Judge returns, with not understanding maths homework, Googling “is this normal?” at ridiculous hours & letting kids win the odd argument just to keep the peace This episode of Mum’s The Word is motherhood exactly as it is. S4 EP: 1 Hannah - Three Births, Midwife, Hospital Birth, Homebirth, Medical Termination, Long labour.

Send a text In today’s episode, Hannah shares her deeply personal journey through three very different birth experiences. Originally from the United States, Hannah is a midwife and PhD candidate who now lives in Switzerland. She worked as a midwife in Australia, where she also had her children. Based on her experiences as a midwife, Hannah had planned to birth her babies at home. After a medically necessary termination at over 20 weeks in her first pregnancy, her first baby was born in hospital. She speaks openly about the birth, the grief that followed, and giving birth in circumstances she had not planned for. Hannah later went on to birth her second and third babies at home. Her second birth unfolded over five days, while her third was the complete opposite. Support the show @homebirthstoriesaustralia Support the show by buying us a coffee! How Andy Griffiths Dads - Bum jokes, imagination and loving what is

Andy is responsible for igniting a love of reading in millions of kids. It’s a complex alchemy, but bum jokes have played a large part in it. From The Day My Bum Went Psycho to the hugely popular Treehouse series (which he created with longtime collaborator Terry Denton and which was edited by his wife Jill), Andy has written wild, boundless and very funny adventures that have drawn many kids into the beautiful escapism of books who otherwise may have missed out. With more than 30 books to his name (and as an ex-school teacher), Andy has become an expert in delving into young minds, and knowing what is going to excite, amaze and keep them turning the page. So we were very excited to chat to Andy and see what he might have gleaned from his unique vantage point as a kids author, and of course from his own dadding journey.   Andy is extremely humble, but passes on some wonderful wisdom and also shares perhaps one of the best ideas we’ve heard for the gathering and preserving family lore. The Family Book. It’s near the end of the chat, so listen out for it! Andy is a big believer in creating space for kids to be who they are, not who we want them to be (a familiar refrain we hear from our learned guests dad) and tries to practise a simple ethos through it all.  Loving What Is - because that’s what’s happening!  Great words to live by, for sure. Massive thanks to Andy - we loved this chat.  You can find out lots more about Andy HERE and find his new book, The Land of Lost Things HERE. — And if you love family adventures, hit the road and take one!  But before you do, get in touch with our best friends and the exclusive sponsor of How Other Dads Dad… HERTZ.  Visit hertz.com.au/hodd to access an exclusive 25% off the base day rate for your next car hire.  T&Cs and exclusions apply. How Rick J Petersen Dads - Survival tips for living a life connected (not Alone)

An awesome outdoorsy special, with inspirational outdoor specialist, Rick Petersen. Rick featured in Season 2 of Alone Australia, and quickly became a fan fave (especially for Hame), with his unwavering positivity in the face of huge adversity and very little food! Beyond trying to stay alive on Alone, using his skills as an ex-soldier and expedition leader in the NT, Rick currently runs weekend camps for people looking to reconnect with the outdoors, including a special focus on dads and sons. As you’ll find out, the deeper purpose beyond learning to build shelters and start a fire is Rick’s passion to bring people together and foster powerful intergenerational connections, and Rick is a master at this.   We were lucky enough to experience this with Rick! He invited us up to QLD (or maybe we invited ourselves?) and we took the kids out bush for a few days, and it was just magic. His love and deep knowledge of nature, his calmness, his equanimity… It was amazing to witness the effect on our kids.  But we also eventually remembered we were there to record an episode, and wow… are we glad we did. Rick is so full of quiet, thoughtful wisdom, often hard earned and we just know so many people are going to get a lot from this chat. Rick, with amazing courage, also reflected on his childhood and revealed that tragically it involved him being the victim of child sexual abuse, so just a heads up that does come up in this episode. (support services listed below) Rick’s openness and kindness is just so inspiring. The way he’s made his life about giving back to the community, the beautiful relationship he has with his wife and two sons… it was a real privilege to spend time with him, and we reckon you’ll feel the same way after listening to this. Sincere thanks to Rick. What a legend. And if you’re interested in joining Rick for a weekend like this, go to rickjpetersen.com - We literally can’t recommend it enough. PS - You can find heaps of awesome Rick TikTok content HERE and follow him on Insta HERE. PPS - if you wanna see just how full on the cliffs were on Tasman island where Rick spent the first few years of his life… Have a look HERE.  Crazy! —— SUPPORT SERVICES Information relating to child safety and protection may bring up strong feelings for some people. Remember, you are not alone. If you need assistance or support, contact details for dedicated support services are below. You can get support for you or anyone you know that has been affected by child sexual abuse at Bravehearts.org.au or Free Call 1800 272 831 - an organisation dedicated to the prevention and treatment of Child Sexual abuse that also offers counciling and education.  You can also go to www.childsafety.gov.au/get-support to see a wide range of support services. If you or a child are in immediate danger, call Triple Zero (000). Information on reporting child safety concerns can be found on the Child Safety Make a report page. And Life Line is available 24 hours a day on 13 11 14 ----------------- Big thanks to HERTZ for helping make this special outdoorsy episode happen.  We used a couple of top-notch, brand new HERTZ 4WD’s to lug all our gear and kids into the bush to camp with Rick, and of course the service was amazing, the kid’s car seats were pre-fitted, the cars were sparkling clean (not by the end!) and the pick-up and drop-off experience was a breeze. HERTZ - It’s car rental made extra special. Head to hertz.com.au/hodd to access an exclusive 25% off the base day rate for your next adventure.  T&Cs and exclusions apply. Toddler Discipline Re-Imagined with Devon Kuntzman, Episode #168

In this episode of The Child Psych Podcast, we’re joined by Devon Kuntzman, parenting educator, early childhood specialist, and advocate for developmentally informed, connection-based discipline. Devon is best known for helping parents reframe toddler behavior—not as defiance or misbehavior, but as communication rooted in brain development, emotional growth, and a deep need for connection. With years of experience supporting families through the most intense and misunderstood years of early childhood, Devon brings clarity and compassion to moments that often leave parents feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or unsure. Together, we explore how our cultural definition of discipline often sets parents and toddlers up for struggle—and why traditional approaches like punishment, threats, or time-outs frequently backfire during the toddler years. Devon explains what’s actually happening in a toddler’s developing brain during meltdowns, refusal, and power struggles, and why expecting impulse control or emotional regulation from young children is both unrealistic and unfair. Drawing from her book Transforming Toddlerhood , Devon helps parents understand why toddler behavior isn’t personal—and how shifting from control to connection can completely change the parenting experience. We talk about the critical difference between discipline and punishment, what toddlers truly learn when fear or control is used, and how parents can respond in ways that build emotional regulation, resilience, and long-term mental health. 👀 Something Big Is Coming for Parents… We’re launching The Parent Coach — and trust us, you’re going to want this in your back pocket. More details soon! The 2026 ICP Parenting Summit is coming! Join us March 16–19 for 35+ expert masterclasses and four interactive half-day workshops, featuring leading voices like Ross Greene, Laura Markham, Robert Melillo, Lawrence Cohen, Kim John Payne, and Jon Fogel. We’ll be diving into the topics parents need most: screens, discipline, anxiety, emotional regulation, neurodiversity, resilience, play, and more. The summit is completely free, and VIP packages include lifetime access, toolkits, certificates, and a digital copy of The Parenting Handbook. Click here to save your seat! Known for her relatable, shame-free approach, Devon empowers parents to trust themselves, regulate their own nervous systems, and move through toddlerhood with confidence rather than constant correction. This conversation is especially supportive for caregivers who want to raise emotionally healthy children without losing themselves in the process. If you’ve ever wondered: * Why doesn’t traditional discipline work with toddlers? * What is my child actually trying to tell me through their behavior? * How can I set limits without damaging our relationship? This episode offers reassurance, insight, and a powerful reframe that many parents have been waiting for.
