In my latest #keynote, I reveal the number one job of every business owner, explain the necessity of thinking from first principles, and challenge audience members to ask me the hardest business question they can think of.

It was reported that roughly 1 in 20 people report having at least one hallucination in a lifetime. Maybe it was drug induced or simply a dream. Either way, how is it that you can have vivid imagery about what feels like reality in the moment? Dr. Jonas Kaplan joins Tom in this conversation to discuss all the ways your brain is filling in the gaps of its own break in knowledge. The brain is truly fascinating to study and so important to understand when you want to be more open-minded and question your beliefs or get a better perception of and understanding of what reality truly is. Part of seeing reality as it really is versus how your brain predicts it to be is coming face to face with information that challenges the beliefs you hold. Jonas and Tom explore research studies that reveal the freaky nature of how our brains really work and ways you can hack your way past the overprotective nature of your brain. Dr. Jonas Kaplan is the Associate Professor of psychology at USC Brain and Creativity Institute, Co-Director of the Dana & David Dornsife Cognitive Neuroimaging Center, and Associate Director for Mindfulness and Neuroimaging for the USC Center for Mindfulness Science

You may be familiar with the saying work hard, play hard, but how does hard work translate to your work ethic? Work ethic is developed and is something that can be improved upon over time. Strong work ethic not only gets the job done, it pulls a driven person through some of the most difficult situations that would deter the common person from even trying. In this episode, you’re going to hear how some of Hollywood's most successful people have decades long careers with monumental success. If you think their talent was enough, guess again. These actors and actresses work just as hard at their skills and their craft as Michal Jordan or Kobe Bryant before the big game. Their successes speak of themselves.

“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard” -Tim Notke

    QUOTES:

“Our biggest competitor is really ourselves [...] overcoming that obstacle of your mind is the number one thing to tackle in pursuing your dreams and your goals.” Hillary Swank [5:59]

“That is super important to be competitive with other people, because they're the ones that push us out of our comfort zone that we didn't even know we were living in.” Hillary Swank [8:24]

“You have to get rid of the people who don't want to play the same game as you do.” John Travolta [13:51]

“When you push yourself beyond what you think is capable, you suddenly realize how capable you are and you're able to just keep pushing and cranking.” Meagan Good [24:53]

“I want to be satisfied and thankful with this is good and this is enough, but I don't want to get comfortable in the sense of like, I know that I can access more. I want to access everything that there is for me to get until there's nothing left.” Meagan Good [28:08]

“So to actually have true freedom, we have to take certain risks. We have to be responsible, more responsible for certain things for ourselves, who we are constantly investigating and interrogating our better selves, to say I'm going to be a little bit better at this tomorrow.” Matthew McConaughey [42:55]

Iain McGilchrist, renowned psychiatrist, author and thinker joins Tom to share some of the key ideas he writes about in his latest 2 volume book, The Matter of Things. Part of what he proposes is that you keep an open mind and be aware that the ideas and images people are so strongly influenced by are in fact myths and stories. The version of what you see in your reality matters to what you decide to see and live your life by.

“It doesn't matter what you look at, it matters what you see.” -Henry David Thoreau

So much of what the world is and who we are is not understood. To think you fully grasp the complexities of consciousness, matter, space and time would be wildly ignorant. Iain perfectly quotes psychologist William James, “ignorance is a sea and knowledge is a drop in that ocean” In this conversation Iain explores ideas of how little we truly know about the cognitive function of the left and right hemispheres of the brain. He highlights the beauty and complexity of order in the universe even where we are unable to fully grasp and understand the order. He’s calling people to be open to the seemingly random chaos and meaninglessness of life to find a better way to live and a better vision of the world we live in. The path of doing so challenges you to embrace the many paradoxical reactions occurring all around us in nature.

    QUOTES:

“Everything that exists, not just in the brain, but in physics, in the world at large in nature, depends on a combination of division and union [...] There needs to be the synthesis of union with division.” [8:59]

“Both hemispheres do everything in some way, but it's all about that ‘in some way’. It's the how not the what. So they do the ‘what’ of the same things, but they do the how of them completely differently.” [12:47]

“The emotional brain is as much the left hemisphere as the right. It specializes in anger, irritability, and doesn't like being crossed.” [28:43]

“Neurology and theology are not at war with one another, they are seeing the same realities just at slightly different levels and in different ways.” [35:42]

“If you want to know about a human being, the brain is a pretty central place to start.” [39:32]
