Q&A: What should I do when my toddler hits or pulls my hair?

Beyond the Sessions is answering YOUR parenting questions! In this episode, Dr. Rebecca Hershberg and I talk about...   Why the expectation that toddlers should already know how to regulate themselves is a common parenting myth. What's actually happening in a child's brain and body when their emotional "gas tank" is empty. Why your child's big reaction to a limit doesn't mean you've done something wrong. The difference between holding a boundary and trying to solve your child's feelings. What to do when your child's behavior is physically aggressive, like hitting or hair pulling. Why your own triggers matter and how understanding them can help you respond differently. The foundational factors (like sleep, fresh air, movement, and connection) that often drive behavior more than discipline strategies.   If you've ever felt powerless, guilty, or overwhelmed in the face of your child's big emotions, this episode will help you zoom out, reset unrealistic expectations, and approach these moments with more clarity and compassion—for both your child and yourself.     REFERENCES AND RELATED RESOURCES:   👉 Want extra support in your parenting journey? What’s Really Going On: Why Screens Never Satisfy Kids

Lots of us think screen time is a discipline problem.“My kid just wants more.”“They don’t know when to stop.”“I need to set better limits.”But what if that’s not actually what’s going on?In this episode, Dr. Becky talks with science journalist Michaeleen Doucleff, author of Dopamine Kids, about the brain system driving kids’ behavior around screens—and why more screen time rarely leads to feeling satisfied. You’ll learn: Why dopamine isn’t about pleasure—it’s about wanting Why kids often feel worse (not better) after screens Why willpower and strict limits don’t work on their own What actually helps kids feel more regulated, fulfilled, and “done” This conversation will shift how you see your child—and give you a more effective, less stressful way to respond. If you’re ready to make changes around screen use in your home, Dr. Becky shares simple, practical scripts to help you get started—covering everything from removing devices from shared spaces to handling your child’s protest, whining, or tantrums. Ding Dongs Merrily

This is the time to look back over the past twelve months and all that's happened thus far. Plus, winter poorly baby worries (we're talking rash anxiety, guys), winter colds and flu's and hyper-panicked visits to A&E (oh, we've all been there). But on the other (dafter) side, juicy boots, Christmas party mornings-afters and how best to pronounce Petit Filou. Seriously.

    It’s Not You. It’s Perimenopause.

Most women have heard of menopause. Far fewer understand perimenopause — the years leading up to it, when things can start to feel… off. Mood shifts. Brain fog. Anxiety. Sleep disruption. A sense of “I don’t recognize myself.” In this episode, Dr. Becky sits down with OB-GYN and menopause expert Dr. Mary Claire Haver to unpack what’s actually happening in the body during perimenopause — and why so many women have been dismissed or left in the dark. They talk about how hormonal changes impact mood, parenting, relationships, and resilience — and how understanding what’s happening internally can shift the story from “something is wrong with me” to “something is changing in my body.” Dr. Haver’s new book, The New Perimenopause (out April 7), is part of a growing movement to bring clarity, research, and real support to this often-overlooked stage of life. If you’ve ever felt unlike yourself and didn’t know why — this conversation will help you connect the dots. Q&A: How do I handle sibling rivalry when my baby keeps touching my toddler's toys?

Beyond the Sessions is answering YOUR parenting questions! In this episode, Dr. Rebecca Hershberg and I talk about...   Whether it's developmentally realistic to expect a baby and a toddler to "work together" during play. If separating siblings in certain moments is helpful parenting… or something we're supposed to avoid. The concept of "territory" in child development and why young children often need spaces and projects that feel protected. Why pushing young children to share too early can sometimes make cooperation harder later on. How helping a toddler trust that their creations and belongings will be respected can actually reduce sibling rivalry over time. The difference between communal family spaces and personal spaces for kids' toys and projects. Simple ways to set boundaries that support both children's needs without turning every moment into a negotiation. Where kids actually learn to get along with siblings — so you can focus on the moments that matter and release some of the pressure around the rest.   If you're parenting siblings close in age and feel like you're constantly refereeing fights over toys, this episode will help you better understand what's developmentally normal and give you practical ways to support both children without feeling like you have to force sharing or cooperation before they're ready.     REFERENCES AND RELATED RESOURCES:   👉 Want extra support in your parenting journey? The Truth About Doing It All: Country Star Mickey Guyton on Burnout, Motherhood & Redefining Success

In this episode of The Mama’s Den, the Mamas are joined by Mickey Guyton—Grammy-nominated country star, trailblazer, and one of the most powerful voices changing the face of country music. From her breakout anthem “Black Like Me” to becoming the first Black woman to host the Academy of Country Music Awards and delivering a stunning National Anthem performance at the Super Bowl, Mickey has built a career full of historic moments. But in this conversation, we are talking about burnout. She brings us behind the headlines—and into real life. This conversation is for the country music fans, the Black women holding it down in spaces that weren’t built for us, and the mamas trying to do everything—and still find time for themselves. The Mamas and Mickey get into: • What it really took to break into (and stay in) country music • The emotional weight of speaking out about racism while pregnant • The terrifying moment she almost lost her son—and how it changed everything • Redefining success, ambition, and what a “home run” looks like now • Burnout, boundaries, and learning to choose yourself too As always, it’s giving sisterhood, honesty, laughter, and those “whew, I needed this” moments. Because sometimes the biggest shift isn’t in your career—it’s in your heart.  Follow our girl Candace Mycale Guyton aka Mickey Guyton on social media at MickeyGuyton on all platforms. Is It True? If I Don’t Punish, I’m Permissive (with Myleik Teele)

Your kid is melting down in public… and you feel it: “If I don’t shut this down, I'm a pushover. My kid will walk all over me." In this first episode of our new Is It True? series, Dr. Becky and Myleik Teele take a closer look at a belief so many parents carry, though rarely question: If I don’t punish, I'm being permissive. Together, they unpack what’s underneath that fear, why punishment can feel so satisfying (and why it often doesn’t work), and what it actually looks like to hold boundaries without being harsh or permissive. They also explore how this question lands differently for Black parents, where the stakes of “not listening” can feel much higher. This is the first in a recurring format we’ll revisit, slowing down common parenting beliefs and expanding them into something sturdier, more usable, and more true. And once you've listened, visit the Good Inside blog where Dr. Becky shares some examples of "same team leadership." Good Inside is growing up! Social Media vs Real Relationships: The Truth No One Shows

This week in The Mama’s Den, we’re getting honest about relationships—and why social media often gets it wrong. From judging couples online to loving a version of someone instead of their full self, the Mamas unpack the real, nuanced reasons relationships work… and why they don’t. Because not everything you see online tells the full story—and sometimes, neither does love alone. If you’ve ever looked up and thought, “Wait… who have you become?”—this one is for you.
