When someone you love starts losing their memory, you want to do something. Anything. Anne O. Rice, RDH, knows that feeling firsthand. After watching cognitive decline move through her family and then reach her mom, she spent years of nights and weekends learning how the brain works and where oral health fits into Alzheimer’s prevention. That work led to a published paper on what dental providers can do in the operatory to help reduce risk, and to consulting alongside preventive neurologist Dr. Richard Isaacson. In this episode, Anne breaks down the connection between gum disease and Alzheimer’s in a way that’s clear, honest, and refreshingly free of fear. When the mouth is out of balance, bacteria and inflammation don’t stay put. They travel through the bloodstream, and the immune response they trigger can reach the brain as neuroinflammation, even before any bacteria get there. We talk about Porphyromonas gingivalis and its gingipains, how they can weaken the blood-brain barrier, and why finding these bacteria in the brain still doesn’t tell the whole story. Anne is careful here, and I love that about her. Alzheimer’s is a complex, whole-body condition, and oral health is one important, modifiable piece of it. From there, we get practical. Anne walks through the home care habits that matter most, why “pink in the sink” is worth paying attention to, and what a whole-health dental visit should include, from blood pressure and oral cancer screening to salivary testing. We also cover blood sugar and the brain, how airway issues and oxygen desaturation during sleep affect cognition, and why knowing your own numbers at every age gives you real power over your health. And yes, we talk about the moment so many of us in dentistry need to hear. “Just a little bit of bleeding” means something, and it deserves a real conversation.
