34: Paul Gilmartin on Depression, Addiction, and Recovery

Paul Gilmartin spent years making people laugh on television and in comedy, but behind the scenes he was struggling with depression, addiction, shame, and the lasting effects of childhood adversity. Those experiences eventually became part of what inspired him to create The Mental Illness Happy Hour, a podcast built around vulnerability, honest conversations, and helping people feel less alone. In this episode of Success, Rewritten, Paul joins Emily for an open conversation about his journey through depression and addiction recovery. He shares how support groups changed his understanding of intimacy, vulnerability, and connection, and why hearing other people tell the truth about their struggles became the foundation for his podcast. Paul also discusses learning to recognize unhealthy patterns without letting shame define him, and why recovery is about more than simply stopping a behavior. Paul also opens up about experiencing thoughts of suicide, the importance of listening rather than trying to fix someone who is struggling, and the practical ways friends and family can offer meaningful support. He shares the tools he continues to rely on after more than two decades of sobriety, including support groups, exercise, meditation, self care, and learning to meet himself with compassion when life gets difficult. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. MAPS Abs and Butt: https://mapsabsandbutt.com Code: LAUNCH for 40% off. Includes Butt Building Diet Guide, Women's Supplement Guide, at-home dumbbell version and a free second program at checkout (Muscle Mommy or Muscle Mommy 15). In this episode the guys break down seven easy food swaps that lower calories, bump protein and still taste great — protein snacks over carb snacks (Crisp Power honey mustard), high-protein Greek yogurt desserts with cocoa whip and berries, shelled nuts instead of pre-shelled roasted ones, grass-fed beef over grain-fed (200-calorie difference in a 12oz ribeye), two lettuce-wrapped burgers instead of a burger and fries, crustless pizza in an iron skillet, and spaghetti squash instead of pasta. They also do a deep dive into Gen Z male depression and anxiety data — why this is the first generation doing worse than midlife adults in mental health metrics, and what the data says actually helps: lifting weights (50% reduction in depression and anxiety symptoms), going to church (33% lower odds of developing depression), and getting a job (95% higher mental health risk when unemployed). They also cover the new FDA-approved myostatin inhibiting drug, bone broth protein for people with high-protein digestion issues, and the anti-protein influencer backlash. Then they answer questions from Instagram. SPONSORS Crisp Power (honey mustard protein pretzels): https://www.crisppower.com/mindpump Code: MINDPUMP for 10% off. 32: Solo Ep. 6: Say the Words: Breaking the Silence Around Suicide

Emily introduces Say the Words, a new event series beginning with a suicide symposium on September 24, 2026, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She shares how conversations with people who have experienced suicide loss opened her eyes to how much stigma, uncertainty, and discomfort still surround the topic, even within mental health spaces. Emily explains why bringing together practitioners, loss survivors, people with lived experience, and community members can create more open and compassionate conversations. She also explores why language matters when talking about suicide, how prevention messaging can sometimes unintentionally affect those who have lost someone, and why sharing personal stories can help others feel less alone. The episode offers a look at the purpose behind Say the Words and Emily’s hope to create space for imperfect but meaningful conversations about mental health. Time to Say Goodbye

“And now, the end is near, and so I face the final curtain….” We are sad to say that we have come to the last episode of Where Is My Mind, and what a journey it has been. Hundreds of podcasts, world class guests, incredible human stories and a dedicated bunch of listeners who have supported us through it all.  For our last episode, Niall is joined by Ciara, who produced the first two seasons of the podcast, and Aoife, who has produced hundreds of episodes since. With a shared passion for changing how we see, treat and understand mental health and wellbeing, the trio discuss the highs and lows of the last 6 years, from how the podcasting landscape has changed to the ongoing societal shifts that impact each of us everyday. It’s a bittersweet ending but we are incredibly proud of everything we have achieved with this podcast, and we hope it encourages each of you to continue to critically thinking about the world, the space we take up in it and space it takes up in us.
