Every scandal begins with a lie. But the truth will come out. And then comes the fallout and the outrage. Scandals have shaped America since its founding. From business and politics to sports and society, we look on aghast as corruption, deceit and ambition bring down heroes and celebrities, politicians and moguls. And when the dust finally settles, we’re left to wonder: how did this happen? Where did they trip up, and who is to blame? From the creators of American History Tellers, Business Wars and Tides of History comes American Scandal, where we take you deep into the heart of America’s dark side to look at what drives someone to break the rules and what happens when they’re caught. Hosted by Lindsay Graham. Need more American Scandal? With Wondery+, enjoy exclusive seasons, binge new seasons first, and listen completely ad-free. Moving older episodes behind a paywall will cost you listeners! People don’t like greed!
Great journalism

I appreciate the balanced professional approach to truth telling, no matter how distasteful to certain US citizens
A difficult review for an otherwise great podcast
16/11/2024
Longtime listener of American Scandal, admittedly not on Apple Podcasts though. This is a difficult review to write, because it has to balance against what has been an othterwise stellar podcast against a recent decision that just... doesn't seem to make any logical sense. For those who aren't aware, recently American Scandal moved it's back catalog behind a paywall. It's unclear the reasons why, but only "recent" episodes stay out in the wild (at time of this review, that seems to be about the last 6 months of episodes). American Scandal is pretty great. While sometimes it feels a little surface level, I get that it's about tryng to present incredibly detailed events in a timely format and in a way that people can listen to, perhaps without having to deeply listen to. The efforts are great, the music backing the podcast is great and it's well produced. I have definitely enjoyed listening to these seasons, even though the ads can sometimes feel excessive (and are often all too repetitive when you are listening to back catalogues - or are simply wondery promoting other wondery products). All in all, it has been awesome value. Originally, the appeal of the wondery+ app was if you wanted instant access. Having a bloat of apps, I did not and did not sign up; however, I wonder now if Wondery feels the need to push those numbers up, because now all bar the recent seasons are now paywall only. Havng had a lovely bank of seasosn I was working through, I found this to be a most frustrating and pointless endevour. It makes no sense to punish people with no access and pay to listen requirements for excellent work, and yet that is the state the podcast is now in. It's truly amazing how podcasting is becoming an audio only version of cable and streaming. Everyone wants their own feifdom to rule over, with their own coveted app and monthly fees that everyone has to pay. "Ad-free" should be a consideration for any subscription, plus the desire to support the creator, but not the necessity of "you can only listen to old things if you pay us!" It's a problematic stance because while I think American Scanal is good, it's just American Scandal. How many other subscriptions does one need? I'm sure wondery+ covers the other wondery podcasts etc, but when they are irrelevant to me or I already have to many, and this is the only one of these I have time for, then what is the value? Truly, there is none. I'm not sure if it's LG himself or Wondery pushing this choice, but sadly, it's just a sign of the times and another way podcasts are becoming horrible and as problematic as every other streaming interaction in this age. Thanks for the great podcasts and memories LG, but it's an unsubscribe from me.
Seriously Wondery?

I really enjoy this podcast, the information is fair and balanced, interesting and insightful. But, seriously, Wondery. I’d rather listen to ads than listen to the first episode and hava to pay for he rest. Sorry, but it’s an unfollow for me.
