Too many loud and disruptive ads during the pod

Pauline Hanson has always criticised immigration, often without facts as pointed out by this podcast. In a landmark ruling, Senator Mehreen Faruqi successfully argued that Pauline Hanson’s social media post violated section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.Justice Stewart found Hanson’s post was motivated by “the race, colour or national or ethnic origin” of Senator Faruqi and her response was not made in good faith as a fair comment on a matter of public interest. Saying that PH didn’t create the people who vote for her and she’s certainly had a lot of help from right-wing shock jocks and the Murdoch media. No other figure has been able to exert influence from the fringe as she has, or for as long. There, she is in a class of her own. Assessing Hanson’s legacy, it may be comforting to view her as an aberration and reflection of a bygone era, however she remains very much a product of the Australian settle colonial story. It’s perhaps more accurate to think of Hanson as a symptom of racism and xenophobia in Australia, rather than its cause.
