Jane Austen Remixed

Stefanie & Melinda

Join your hosts Stefanie and Melinda as they dive deep into the world of adaptations of Jane Austen's beloved novel Pride & Prejudice, where some are fabulous, some aren’t their cup of tea, and some are delightfully unhinged. It's Austen, but not as you know it. (Please note that while Apple has given the pod an "explicit" rating, the very few swears are bleeped and the hosts do not discuss any spicy scenes outside of noting their presence in the storyline. To get to know what the pod is and isn't about, give the Welcome episode a listen!)

Shadow of Anubis by Adele Dixon

What if Pride & Prejudice took place in the wave of Egyptomania that followed Napoleon's surrender in Egypt? What if Darcy was a treasure-hunting adventurer who craved more than just being really, really ridiculously rich? What if Lizzy inherited her father's love of Ancient Egypt and was a very talented translator of hieroglyphics? Stefanie and Melinda discuss this adaptation being set at the birth of Egyptology (which happens to perfectly align to when Austen was penning her novels), some downright horrifying facts about ancient mummies, and what it feels like to finally get a Mr Bennet who isn't vying for the role of "Worst Father in the Austenverse", in Shadow of Anubis by Adele Dixon. Links & Mentions You can find an excellent article on Mummy Mania, the mass export of corpses, and that Mark Twain anecdote here.  More on the history of Medical Cannibalism can be found here.  And if you still need to read more about the history of eating mummies, you can do that here.  Giovanni Belzoni’s full British Museum Biography is here. And more in-depth biography is also here.   If you’re interested in how Belzoni managed to move (and steal) monuments that no one else could, check out this article.   And you can read more on the Parliamentary Act that forbids the removal of the Rosetta Stone here.  If you need subtitles or a transcript, these are available through Apple Podcasts. Austenland by Jerusha Hess

What if Pride & Prejudice was about a hopelessly romantic American named Jane who dropped her life savings on a trip to England to take part in a personalised fantasy romance at a Regency themed live-in experience? What if the woman who owns the venue it is inexplicably horrible to her the whole time? What if she accidentally falls in love with her own Mr Darcy for real? Stefanie and Melinda discuss the absolutely stacked cast of Jane Austen adaptation alumni who feature in the film, the obsession in early aughts films with depicting single women in their 30s as desperate losers, and the intense flashbacks this movie gave them to particular (and particularly unhinged) adaptation that featured in Season 1, in Austenland directed by Jerusha Hess.  Links & Mentions Want to get lost in a rabbit hole that Stefanie cut from the episode? Read up on Regency House Party, the insane reality dataing show that forced signle people to live an incredibly accurate Regency lifestyle while trying to find love... think insanly accurate, like washing your hair with egg whites, and being forced to sleep in a broom closet-sized room off the side of your chaperone's rooms because the producers designated you a lowly "lady's companion", level of accurate.  The Indiewire faux pas is linked here.  The Guardian review can be found in full here. Miss Caroline Bingley, Private Detective by Kelly Gardiner & Sharmini Kumar

What if Caroline Bingley was the main character and we learn what happens to her after Pride & Prejudice? What if she ends up embroiled in a murder case alongside Georgiana Darcy in London? What if she discovers she is pretty good at solving crimes?Melinda and Stefanie discuss murder mysteries, characters changing for sequels and flying wombs in Miss Caroline Bingley, Private Detective by Kelly Gardiner and Sharmini Kumar. Pride & Prejudice & Zombies by Jane Austen & Seth Grahame-Smith

What if the England of Pride & Prejudice was beset by a strange plague that brought the dead back to life to slaughter the living? What if young ladies were taught proficiency in sword play rather than playing the piano? And what if Elizabeth was a heartless, revenge driven, borderline sociopath? Stefanie and Melinda discuss what happens when revisiting one of your favourite adaptations goes awry, and the painful hilarity of watching Hollywood go completely rogue on the film adaptation of a (sort of) classic novel in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies by Jane Austen & Seth Grahame-Smith and its companion film, directed by Burr Steers.  Links & Mentions The author’s interview in The Times can be read in full here. Additional interviews used as sources can be found here on TIme.com, here on Entertainment Weekly, and the author discusses reading everything Austen ever wrote here. More information on Isolationist Japan can be found here . A brief history of ninja can be found here - NB Stefanie uses the modern prefecture names only in this episode.  Emma Coffin’s fantastic look at Orientalism  ("Ninjas – Invisible in More Ways than One: Orientalism in Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies") can be found here. The more in-depth examination of costuming in PPZ that Stefanie references is here. While you can access the interview with the 2005 film costume designer Jacqueline Durran here on The Wayback Machine, where she mentions that Joe Wright was desperate for any excuse to shift the temporal setting of the novel to avoid "unflattering empire waistlines".You can read more about the religious piety aspect of PPZ, that we didn't have time to get into in the episode, here in the fabulously named “Piety and Pigs Brains” essay on the JASNA website.
